Chapter 23: Chapter 23: The Name We Carried
The hissing of the pod grew louder as the glass fractured, sending a spiderweb of cracks across its surface. The group stood frozen, the tension in the air thick enough to cut with a knife.
"Stay back," Ishizaki said, his knife glowing faintly in his hand.
Drax stepped forward, his hammer at the ready. "What's in there?" he asked, his voice low.
"Analyzing," Solus replied. "Containment protocols indicate biological and mechanical components. Warning: potential threat detected."
The stranger's eyes narrowed as she stared at the pod. "This… this isn't right," she muttered.
"What do you mean?" Ishizaki asked.
Before she could answer, the pod's glass shattered, releasing a burst of cold mist that rolled across the floor.
Pod Reveal
As the mist cleared, the group saw a figure slumped inside the pod. It was humanoid but unnervingly unnatural—their body was covered in sleek metal plating that glowed faintly with Q-Energy. Tubes and wires ran along their limbs, connecting them to the pod's inner walls.
"It's a… person?" Hana whispered, her voice trembling.
"Not entirely," the stranger said, her tone grim.
The figure's eyes fluttered open, glowing faintly with the same energy that pulsed through the facility. They looked at the group, their gaze distant and unfocused.
"Identity: unknown," Solus said. "Subject appears to be a hybrid of organic and mechanical components. Status: semi-stable."
The figure moved slowly, their movements jerky and unnatural. "Where… am I?" they muttered, their voice distorted as though two voices were speaking at once.
"Stay back," Drax warned, positioning himself between the figure and the kids.
The Stranger's Name
The figure in the pod suddenly looked at the stranger, their gaze sharpening. "You," they said, their voice a mix of recognition and anger.
The stranger's expression darkened. "It's me," she said quietly.
"You know them?" Ishizaki asked, his eyes narrowing.
The stranger hesitated, then nodded. "I don't know who they are now, but I know what they used to be," she said. "They were one of the first test subjects in the facility. Before everything went wrong."
"What's your connection to all of this?" Ishizaki pressed, his voice sharp.
The stranger exhaled slowly, her shoulders sagging as she met his gaze. "My name is Kaede," she said finally. "I was one of the lead researchers here. Before I realized what we were really doing."
The group stared at her in stunned silence.
"You worked for them?" Drax said, his voice filled with disbelief.
"I didn't know," Kaede said, her voice trembling slightly. "At first, it was supposed to be research—helping people, curing diseases, unlocking potential. But then it became something else. Something… horrifying."
She glanced at the figure in the pod, her jaw tightening. "They started using people. Turning them into weapons. I tried to stop it, but by then, it was too late. They turned on me. That's how I ended up with this." She tapped the glowing device in her chest.
Ishizaki's chest tightened as he processed her words. "Why didn't you tell us?" he asked.
"Because I didn't think you'd trust me," Kaede admitted. "And because I'm not sure I deserve it."
Deeper Into the Facility
The group left the containment chamber behind, though the weight of Kaede's revelation lingered heavily in the air. They moved cautiously through the facility's winding corridors, the faint hum of machinery and distant echoes keeping their nerves on edge.
"This place is a maze," Drax muttered, his hammer resting against his shoulder.
"It's designed that way," Kaede said. "They didn't want anyone leaving. Or finding out what was really happening here."
Ishizaki felt a strange sense of familiarity as they passed through another chamber filled with glowing consoles and dormant machinery. His head throbbed, and faint whispers echoed in his mind.
"Solus," he said quietly. "Why does this place feel so familiar?"
"Unknown," Solus replied. "However, sensory responses suggest a latent connection to facility systems."
"What does that mean?" Ishizaki asked, his voice tight.
"Insufficient data," Solus said.
Kaede glanced at him, her expression unreadable. "You're connected to this place," she said quietly. "I don't know how, but you are."
New Danger
The group reached a large door at the end of a corridor, its surface glowing faintly with energy.
"This is it," Kaede said, her tone tense. "The main lab is on the other side."
Before Ishizaki could respond, a sharp alarm blared, and red lights bathed the corridor.
"Warning," Solus said. "Security protocols activated. Enemy units inbound."
The sound of footsteps echoed in the distance, growing louder with each passing second.
"Get ready," Ishizaki said, his knife glowing faintly as he took a step forward.
The chapter ends with the group bracing for a fight as the facility's defenses come to life.
A piercing alarm tore through the air as crimson warning lights bathed the corridor in a hellish glow. The deep hum of machinery powering up sent a chill down Ishizaki's spine.
"They know we're here," Kaede said, her voice steady despite the tension in the air.
The walls shifted, panels sliding open with a mechanical hiss. From the darkness, sleek drones emerged, their red eyes locking onto the group. A row of automated turrets descended from the ceiling, their barrels humming with charged energy.
"Hostiles detected," Solus announced. "Combat engagement necessary."
Drax tightened his grip on his hammer. "Figures."
Ishizaki's chest heaved as he forced himself to stand straight. No time for doubt.
"Protect the kids!" he shouted, his knife flaring to life. "We take them down fast!"
Facility Defenses Activate
The first shot came from a turret overhead. A searing plasma bolt sizzled through the air, barely missing Drax as he shoved Ryo behind cover.
"Damn things are fast," Drax growled, swinging his hammer at an incoming drone. The impact sent the machine crashing into the wall, sparks erupting from its broken frame.
Kaede was already moving, her fingers dancing across her wrist-mounted device. "Give me ten seconds," she called out. "I can jam their targeting systems."
"We don't have ten seconds!" Ishizaki snapped, ducking as another plasma bolt grazed his shoulder. The heat sent a sharp sting through his arm, but he forced himself forward.
Two drones zeroed in on him, their weapons charging. Ishizaki activated Quantum Step, vanishing in a blur before reappearing behind one. His blade slashed through its core, sending it tumbling to the ground.
The second drone spun toward him, but before it could fire, a shockwave erupted behind it. Kaede had jammed its sensors, causing it to hesitate.
Ishizaki didn't waste the opening. He lunged, his knife carving through the machine's circuits.
Battle for Survival
"More incoming!" Drax shouted, swinging his hammer at a second wave of drones.
Kaede's eyes flickered with focus as she hacked into the turret system. "Almost got it… Done!"
The turrets powered down instantly, their glowing barrels dimming.
Drax let out a breath of relief. "Nice work."
Kaede smirked. "Told you I was useful."
A sudden dizziness overtook Ishizaki, his vision blurring. His legs trembled as he barely dodged another plasma bolt. Too much…
"Host physical strain critical," Solus warned. "Recommend immediate withdrawal."
"Shut up," Ishizaki muttered, pushing himself forward.
Drax caught his stumble. "You're gonna drop dead before we even reach the real fight."
"I'm fine," Ishizaki lied.
Kaede glanced at him, something unreadable in her expression. "No, you're not."
Breaking Through
The last of the drones fell, and the alarms dimmed slightly. The group stood panting in the aftermath, the acrid smell of burning metal filling the air.
Hana peeked out from behind cover. "Is… is it over?"
"For now," Kaede said.
Ishizaki wiped sweat from his brow, his heartbeat erratic. The room felt too familiar, the facility's energy pulsing in rhythm with something inside him.
"This place," he murmured. "It's connected to me somehow."
Kaede's gaze sharpened. "What do you mean?"
"I don't know. I just… feel it."
Solus's voice echoed in his mind, distant yet unnerving.
"You were always meant to return."
Ishizaki's breath caught in his throat.
"What the hell does that mean?" he muttered under his breath.
A Shocking Discovery
The group pressed forward, stepping through a massive reinforced door that led into a sprawling chamber. The room was lined with containment pods—some shattered, others still sealed. A low, rhythmic pulse filled the air, as though the facility itself was breathing.
Drax's eyes narrowed. "This place looks like a damn lab."
Kaede's expression darkened. "Because it is."
Ishizaki's gaze swept across the room, his stomach twisting. Something wasn't right.
Then he saw it.
In the center of the chamber stood a single pod, different from the others. Unlike the cold, sterile design of the rest, this one was sleek, reinforced with glowing runes and a control panel covered in unfamiliar symbols.
Solus spoke again, but this time, there was something different in its tone.
"Warning: Priority containment unit detected. Subject classified as 'Phase III Prototype.'"
Ishizaki took a step closer, his heartbeat pounding in his ears. Phase III… just like the files we found.
Then the pod hissed.
A slow release of steam escaped from the edges, and the locks began to disengage.
Kaede's eyes widened. "No… it's waking up."
