Chapter 10: 10: Escape
The rift tore at the fabric of reality like a wound in the very air, its edges shimmering with impossible colors that Squidward couldn't even begin to understand. It was as though the void itself had become sentient, bending and twisting into shapes that defied logic. Hammerhead's monstrous figure loomed behind them, a hulking mass of shadow and fury, and his voice echoed in the void like a distant thunderstorm.
"You think you can escape me?" Hammerhead's voice was a deep growl, vibrating the air. "This place is mine. You are nothing but playthings in my world."
Squidward's heart raced, his breath coming in shallow gasps. He had never been good at fighting. The last thing he wanted to do was face whatever nightmare Hammerhead had become. He glanced at SpongeBob, who was breathing heavily beside him, eyes wide with terror.
"SpongeBob," Squidward hissed, his grip tight on the sponge's arm. "We need to move. Now."
SpongeBob nodded, his voice barely a whisper. "What are we supposed to do? This... this is insane!"
Squidward didn't have the luxury of contemplating the odds. His mind was screaming at him to act, to find a way out, but all he could do was push forward into the unknown. The rift pulsed again, a wave of energy washing over them. The pull was strong, but it wasn't just the rift trying to suck them in—it was Hammerhead, forcing his presence into the very air they breathed.
"Get away from the rift!" the stranger shouted from the other side of the void, their voice strained. "I need more time, just a little longer!"
But Squidward wasn't sure how much time they had left. The ground beneath them shook, and the air crackled with a raw energy Squidward had never felt before. He turned, looking for any possible escape, but there was nothing. Nothing but that monstrous figure and the rift, stretching wider with every second.
"We can't outrun him," Squidward muttered under his breath. He grabbed SpongeBob by the shoulders and shook him, trying to steady his nerves. "We have to fight back. Somehow. I don't care if I'm completely outmatched."
SpongeBob blinked, panic still clear in his eyes. "But how? He's… he's huge! And we're just... us!"
Squidward hesitated, staring at Hammerhead as the creature's form shifted and morphed like liquid darkness. The fear in SpongeBob's eyes was contagious, but Squidward wasn't about to let panic take over.
"We're going to have to use our surroundings," Squidward said, his voice firmer now, though his heart was still pounding. "If we're going down, I'm taking him with me."
He looked around, scanning the empty space, the weight of the moment heavy in the air. Nothing was solid, no walls or structures to provide cover. But the rift's energy—it was everywhere. Squidward had a gut feeling that the very air was infused with the same power that had pulled them into this place.
"SpongeBob, I need you to trust me," Squidward said urgently. "You can do this. Think of all the times we've gotten through crazy situations. We're not done yet."
SpongeBob nodded, though the fear was still evident in his eyes. "Okay. But what are we doing?"
Squidward's gaze never left Hammerhead, his mind racing. If the rift was connected to whatever power Hammerhead was drawing from, maybe they could turn it against him. But how?
Suddenly, the ground shook violently, and Hammerhead let out an earth-shattering roar. The creature surged forward, slamming into the air in front of them, the force of it causing a crack in the very space around them. The rift pulsated harder, and Squidward's chest tightened. It was now or never.
"Now!" Squidward shouted.
Without thinking, he pushed SpongeBob toward the edge of the rift and sprinted directly into the chaos. The air vibrated with unbearable pressure as Squidward's mind locked into a singular purpose: disrupt the rift, throw Hammerhead off balance.
He reached out, desperate to grasp anything within his reach. His fingers brushed the swirling energy, and for a moment, everything froze. Time seemed to stop. The rift's force pushed against him, trying to pull him in, but he held on, fingers trembling. It was like nothing he had ever experienced—a pure, unfiltered energy, violent and dangerous, but with the faintest pulse of something familiar.
Is this it?
Squidward didn't have time to question what was happening. With a guttural yell, he yanked at the rift's edge, pulling with everything he had.
The world seemed to tremble, reality flickering like a malfunctioning lightbulb. Hammerhead howled in frustration, a feral sound that seemed to shake the very air around them. His shadowy form surged forward, faster now, a beast intent on swallowing everything in its path.
Squidward stumbled back, barely avoiding the creature's clawed hands as they swiped through the void. He could feel the pull of the rift, its gravitational force nearly overwhelming him.
"Squidward, look out!" SpongeBob cried.
Before Squidward could react, Hammerhead lunged, his massive form closing the distance between them in an instant. Squidward's breath caught in his throat as he watched the creature's claws extend, ready to crush them both.
Everything seemed to slow. For one fleeting moment, Squidward saw the future—the endless void, the destruction of everything he had known, and the certainty that this would be his last stand. But then, something inside him snapped.
The rift flared brighter, the energy exploding out of control. The ground beneath Squidward's feet gave way as he was sucked into the void. For a split second, he felt his body stretch, distort, as if being torn apart by the very fabric of reality.
A blinding flash of light filled his vision. Squidward's heart raced in his chest, and everything went dark.
