Chapter 4: 4

As Yon-Woo leaned against the cold wall of the hallway, he took short breaths. His school was a mess. The air was filled with blood, smoke, and the smell of burned meat. People who had never been in real battle were now running, screaming, and dying because of the sudden dungeon break.

There was a deep growl that could be heard in the hallways. A monster that looked like a lizard and had cracked black scales on its body rubbed its claws against the tiled floor and sniffed the air. He was weak enough to move yet, but Yon-Woo knew he had to.

He made a fist. His skills were limited. To kill his target, he had to touch it, but that meant taking in half of their strength. The trouble was that he was just as weak as every other student here right now. He would die before he could even use his power if he rushed in without a plan.

When the monster turned around, it saw a student who was too slow to hide. A girl whose leg is hurt. It lunged.

 Yon-Woo got up and moved.

He quickly reached out and hit the animal on the scaled neck. It worked right away. The monster's body shook fiercely, and its flesh fell apart like it was being torn apart from the inside by hands that couldn't be seen. Before it could get to its meal, it fell over and died.

 Yon-Woo...felt the rush.

He felt a rush of power. His bones and muscles got stronger. His body had changed, and now it was only half as strong as the monster's. It was only a little, but it was something.

The girl looked at him with scared, wide eyes. "H-How did you—"

"No time," Yon-Woo said in a low voice, moving away. There were going to be more monsters, so he had to get stronger before they got real.

Walking through the halls like a ghost, he watched and waited, only hitting when he was sure. Every touch from him spelled death, and each death made him faster and stronger. A kobold. A goblin. A changed wolf. He slowly drained his strength, and his body changed to match.

 He then felt it.

 Having a strong presence.

 There was a Hunter there.

Yon-Woo hid behind a table that was on its side and peered out through the cracks. The man was dressed in a long coat that was lined with spells, and his aura was charged with energy that was held back. Just being around him made the air chill. A very powerful Hunter, one of those who were like gods of war and stood taller than most people.

Yon-Woo clenched his teeth. The situation could get out of hand if the Hunter saw him or his power.

The Hunter raised his sword, and energy buzzed along its edge. With one swing, he killed a whole group of monsters, cutting their bodies apart easily.

Yon-Woo slowly let out steam. He needed to be careful.

 He had to keep killing.

 Had to keep getting bigger.

 But more than anything else...

It was important for him that no one knew what he could do.

The school was a mess when he got there the next morning. Even though the bodies were gone, the air still had a faint smell of smoke and blood. Reporters rushed the gates and pressed mics against anyone who wanted to speak, or didn't want to. As the students who had just barely escaped the attack told their stories again and again, they either didn't say anything because they were too shocked or lied about what they did.

But one name kept coming up.

"Yon-Woo?" A student laughed and looked like he didn't believe it. "He wasn't even scratched when I saw him after the attack." "How the hell did he get through that without getting hurt?"

"All right?" It was strange to see him kill a monster. He hardly touched it before it... died."

From the hallway, Yon-Woo heard with a blank look on his face. He didn't expect the stories to spread so quickly. It was easy for him to stay out of sight during the attack. He only killed when no one was looking. He wasn't careful enough, though.

 This had to be fixed.

It wasn't long before Yon-Woo's phone rang in class. Number not known.

He looked at the screen and wasn't sure if he should answer. After that, he did.

 "Hello?"

"You did well," said a deep voice. "Most people in that situation would have died, but you? "Not even a scratch."

Yon-Woo got a tighter grip on the phone. "Who is this?"

"A scout," the voice said, sounding almost amused. "Someone who likes people like you. "People who stay alive even though they shouldn't"

There was a long pause between them.

"You'll be hearing from us soon, Yon-Woo."

 The line stopped working.

Yon-Woo slowly let out a breath. His mind was rushing. He was no longer just dealing with nosy kids. A important person had noticed.

He already knew what he was going to do next by lunchtime. He would have to draw attention away from himself if people thought his survival was odd. Good luck. Play down his part. Let other people think he had just been hiding well.

A lot of students were still talking about the attack when he walked into the canteen. His sigh was too big, and he shook his head. "Man... "I was so damn lucky," he said out loud, trying hard not to laugh. "I just barely got away. I would be dead if I hadn't been hidden under the desks in the library.

Some kids turned around and listened.

 Someone laughed. "You hid?"

"Of course, I did!" Yon-Woo said with a nervous laugh. "What else should I have done?" I saw Hunter cut those things up like they were nothing. There's no way I could fight them and stay alive."

Things got less tense in the room. As more people nodded, their doubts faded. No one liked a hero story that made them feel weak, but someone who had been through the same thing? I could handle that better.

 Yon-Woo knew the truth, though.

 Someone else did it too.

The person who called him wasn't sure.

That meant he had just joined a game that was much bigger than he thought it would be.
