Chapter 25: why didn’t his soul appear
The eerie sneer echoed through the air, sending shivers down everyone's spines. The thick fog reduced visibility to less than five meters, enveloping the area in a blinding whiteness. Even Kakashi's figure became a blur, adding to the growing sense of dread.
Fear gripped their hearts. The most dangerous thing about fear is how it paralyzes you, making the unseen threat even more terrifying.
Sasuke's nerves were on edge. The slightest lapse in concentration could mean death. This feeling... it reminded him of that night. The night when the moon hung blood-red in the sky, and the streets were painted crimson with the blood of his clan. His brother, Itachi, had walked among the bodies, taking life after life—even their parents. The helplessness, the fear, the overwhelming sense of death... it was all coming back to him.
Kakashi's voice cut through the tension. "Sasuke!"
Kakashi stepped back, his figure becoming slightly clearer in the fog. "Don't worry. I'll protect you with my life. I won't let him kill any of my comrades."
Suddenly, a chilling voice whispered in their ears. "Oh? Is that so? I don't think so..."
The group froze. Zabuza Momochi, the Demon of the Hidden Mist, had appeared behind them, standing right in front of Dazna. His massive beheading sword was gone, but the kunai in his hand was already at Dazna's throat.
The sudden shift in the situation was staggering. Even Naruto, who had been prepared, was caught off guard. The gap in strength was painfully obvious.
What could they do? Their only hope was Kakashi.
Kakashi didn't disappoint. In a flash, he appeared behind Zabuza, gripping the hand that held the kunai. With his other hand, Kakashi drove a kunai into Zabuza's body. But instead of blood, water flowed from the wound.
A water clone!
Hinata shouted, "Behind you!"
Kakashi reacted instantly, blasting the water clone apart with a well-placed strike. At the same time, Zabuza's massive beheading sword came swinging back at Kakashi.
Wait—how had Zabuza retrieved his sword? Naruto's eyes widened. Shouldn't it have been thrown into the sea by my clone? The speed of their battle was too fast for him to follow. Even when he saw an opening, it was gone before he could act.
But then it hit him. The critical moment wasn't now—it was when Kakashi jumped into the sea! Naruto's mind raced. I need to do something before it's too late!
Before Naruto could act, the beheading sword sliced through Kakashi's waist. But Kakashi's body dissolved into water—another water clone.
Zabuza sneered. "You copied my technique? Impressive. But don't think you can beat me that easily."
Kakashi reappeared behind Zabuza, his kunai aimed at Zabuza's neck. "You're not the only one with tricks."
Zabuza's eyes narrowed. "You're good, Copy Ninja. But don't underestimate me!"
The ground beneath Kakashi erupted as Zabuza's shadow clone swung the beheading sword. Kakashi dodged, but Zabuza followed up with a kick, sending Kakashi crashing into the water.
Zabuza disappeared into the mist, reappearing moments later on the water's surface. He formed hand signs. "Water Style: Water Prison Technique!"
A sphere of water rose, trapping Kakashi inside. Zabuza smirked. "You're not breaking free from this. While you're stuck, I'll deal with your students. Then we'll finish this."
But just as Zabuza turned, three Naruto clones burst from the water, tackling him. "Detonation tags, go!"
The explosion rocked the area, forcing Zabuza to release the Water Prison. Kakashi emerged, coughing but unharmed. "That idiot... he really used detonation tags that close?"
Naruto grinned. "It worked, didn't it?"
Zabuza, now bleeding and furious, roared, "You little brat! I'll kill you!"
He reached for his beheading sword, only to find it missing. Naruto had replaced it with a substitution log.
Kakashi stepped forward, his Sharingan eye exposed. "Your fight is with me."
Zabuza, now unarmed and enraged, began forming hand signs for his most powerful technique. Kakashi mirrored his movements perfectly.
Zabuza's eyes widened. "How is he copying me so perfectly?"
Kakashi smirked. "Learned something new?"
Zabuza growled. "Stop mocking me!"
Their hands moved in perfect sync, their voices overlapping. "I won't lose to you!"
But then, something unexpected happened. Kakashi's body flickered, and Zabuza found himself staring at... himself.
An illusion?
Kakashi's voice echoed. "Water Style: Water Dragon Jutsu!"
A massive water dragon surged from the river, slamming into Zabuza and pinning him against a tree. Kakashi stood over him, kunai in hand. "It's over."
Zabuza coughed, blood dripping from his mouth. "How...? How did you predict my moves?"
Kakashi's Sharingan gleamed. "I saw it all."
Suddenly, two senbon needles flew through the air, striking Zabuza's neck. His body went limp.
A masked figure stepped out of the shadows. "Thank you. I've been waiting for the chance to kill Zabuza."
Kakashi turned to the newcomer. "That mask... you're from the Hidden Mist's Hunter-Nin squad?"
The masked boy nodded. "Yes. My name is Haku. I've been tracking Zabuza for some time."
Haku turned to Naruto. "The beheading sword you have belongs to Kirigakure. May I have it back?"
Naruto hesitated, glancing at Kakashi. Kakashi checked Zabuza's pulse. "He's dead. It's over."
Haku knelt beside Zabuza's body, his voice soft. "Thank you for helping me complete my mission."
Naruto frowned. "Wait... is he really dead? He seemed so strong..."
Haku's voice was calm. "Your teacher confirmed it. He's gone."
But as Naruto touched Zabuza's body, the Nine-Tails' voice echoed in his mind. "Hmm... why didn't his soul appear?"
Naruto replied silently, "That's because he's not really dead..."
