The process of smelting the sword went smoothly.
Uncle Xuan had found detailed information about the beheading sword in his father's collection of notes. The records included the composition of the sword, the order of extraction for its materials, and the methods for refining each component.
For a long time, the two of them pored over the information. While Uncle Xuan thought Naruto was just helping him search, he had no idea that Naruto was memorizing every detail. Naruto's photographic memory allowed him to absorb the knowledge effortlessly.
Naruto didn't mention this, of course. The more he read, the more fascinated he became.
Naruto: "Can I keep flipping through these?"
Uncle Xuan, excited and distracted, waved his hand: "Sure, just be careful with the older pages. Don't tear them."
Unbeknownst to Uncle Xuan, Naruto was essentially stealing knowledge right under his nose.
Uncle Xuan muttered to himself as he worked, "This kid's too trusting. If I skimmed some of the materials, he'd never know. Too kind for his own good."
Little did he know, Naruto had already memorized everything.
By the time the materials were ready for refining, Naruto had absorbed as much knowledge about sword forging as possible.
The knowledge was divided into three main parts:
Material Introduction: This included types of materials, collection methods, refining techniques, and the unique properties of materials from different regions. It also covered the nuances of swords made from these materials and precautions to take.
Forging Techniques: This section detailed hammering methods, forging processes, energy-saving techniques, and how to maintain stamina during long forging sessions. It also included exercises to build the physical strength needed for forging and daily maintenance routines.
Naruto learned that master blacksmiths could even strengthen their bodies through forging.
Material Fusion and Separation: This part explained the effects of combining different materials and how to separate them during refining.
After reading through all three sections, Naruto felt like he'd stepped into a new world. He was captivated and couldn't get enough.
Uncle Xuan approached Naruto: "Naruto?"
He was ready to begin the next step of refining and needed to extract specific materials.
Naruto quickly listed the names of three materials.
Naruto: "If we add these three during refining, we can extract a composite metal that enhances the final product!"
Uncle Xuan: "What did you say?"
Naruto, pretending to recall: "Oh, I read about it in one of the books. A master blacksmith mentioned this technique for the beheading sword."
Uncle Xuan: "Which book? Where is it? Let me see."
Naruto hesitated. There was no such book—he'd deduced the method himself.
Naruto: "Uh... I can't remember which one it was. I've read so many."
Uncle Xuan: "It's fine. If it's in the books, we'll find it later. No time to look now."
Naruto: "Right, right!"
Uncle Xuan gathered the three materials Naruto had mentioned. "Are you sure about this? If it goes wrong, we could waste a lot of good material. Though the living steel should be fine."
Naruto: "Yeah, let's add them in order. Anything besides the living steel is just a bonus."
Uncle Xuan: "Alright. It's your sword, so it's your call."
Naruto silently calculated. Based on what he'd learned, this method wouldn't just preserve the living steel—it would increase its yield by consuming less valuable materials. Overall, it was a win.
Plus, it was a chance to test the accuracy of his deductions.
Soon, three alloys were refined from the added materials:
A soft, malleable metal.
A hard, brittle metal with a honeycomb structure.
A nearly transparent, crystal-like metal.
After testing the alloys, Uncle Xuan nodded in approval. "This method is brilliant! The first metal adds toughness, the second improves structural stability, and the third enhances chakra conductivity. It's perfect for forging most weapons. Well worth it!"
"Naruto, if you can find that book again, let me know. That master's theories are incredibly advanced."
Naruto: "Uh... there are so many books. My eyes are tired, and I can't remember which one it was."
Uncle Xuan nodded sympathetically: "I get it. Even I feel dizzy after looking through all these materials."
Naruto: "..."
Naruto was thrilled. The successful extraction of the three materials proved his theories were correct. It also sparked his interest in forging.
He was particularly intrigued by the idea that forging could strengthen the body. Every bit of physical improvement brought him closer to mastering the Eight Gates.
Where else could he find such a perfect opportunity?
Naruto: "Uncle, what would I need to learn forging?"
Uncle Xuan hesitated: "You want to learn forging?"
Naruto: "Yeah. I think it's amazing how combining materials can create something so incredible. It's like playing god."
Uncle Xuan: "You really think so?"
Perhaps inspired by the living steel, Uncle Xuan was unusually enthusiastic today.
He pointed to the largest hammer on the forging table. "If you can lift and swing this hammer, I'll teach you."
Naruto tried lifting the hammer but couldn't budge it.
Uncle Xuan: "Don't push yourself. No one can lift it on their first try. Start with a smaller hammer."
Naruto: "No! I want to try. Just give me a second."
Naruto removed his weighted training clothes and wrist weights.
Naruto: "These things stay heavy as long as I keep chakra flowing through them. I'll take them off for now."
He set the weights down gently.
Uncle Xuan's eyes widened. "How much weight are you carrying?"
Naruto: "25% load, totaling 205 kilograms."
205 kilograms? That's over 450 pounds! This kid's a monster!
Naruto lifted the hammer with ease and swung it down, sending sparks flying. "So? Am I qualified?"
Uncle Xuan: "Absolutely. You've got a natural talent for forging. But I'll teach you the proper way to build muscle through forging. Otherwise, you might stunt your growth."
The proper way? Naruto was all ears.
One of his concerns was that improper training might hinder his growth. He didn't want to be stuck at 1.5 meters tall because of the Eight Gates.
He suspected that Might Guy and Rock Lee had other training methods to complement the Eight Gates, but those weren't mentioned in the scrolls he'd found.
Naruto had obtained the Eight Gates technique through unconventional means, after all.
The thought of stunting his growth had almost driven him to despair.
As they talked, steam began rising from the refining furnace.
Uncle Xuan's eyes lit up: "Blue steam! That's a sign the living steel is almost ready!"
