Chapter 33: The sword

The sword forged with live steel required extra care, and Uncle Xuan was meticulous in handling it. None of the materials used were ordinary, so the forging process was delayed for several days. After extensive research and calculations to determine the optimal material ratios, they finally began the construction.

Naruto had become proficient enough to handle the hardening process on his own. His hammer strikes were precise and powerful. However, integrating the materials required Uncle Xuan's expertise. His experience and intuition far surpassed what Naruto could achieve from just reading books.

The wind-refined stone and water-refined stone were ground into fine powder, fused with blue grain steel, and forged into intricate patterns. These patterns were then twisted together through thousands of layers of folding, creating a mesmerizing design.

Next, they added the three alloys extracted from the beheading sword. The amounts were small but carefully calculated for the perfect balance.

Finally, they incorporated the live steel. The sword was repeatedly folded and hammered, with Naruto channeling his chakra into the blade to enhance its properties.

Uncle Xuan explained: "This makes the sword more attuned to you."

When the sword was nearly complete, it needed one final step: a blood offering.

Uncle Xuan: "Using your blood will give the sword a spiritual connection to you."

This wasn't mentioned in any of the books, but Naruto followed the instructions. Though he didn't feel any immediate difference, he trusted Uncle Xuan's expertise.

Uncle Xuan: "You'll be carrying two swords now?"

Naruto: "No, just one."

Uncle Xuan: "You should test your new sword against your old one."

Naruto hesitated: "How? By clashing them?"

He felt a pang of reluctance. Having poured so much effort into forging the new sword, he didn't want to damage it.

Uncle Xuan: "If you're worried, just channel a little chakra into it."

Naruto did as instructed, preparing to strike the old sword.

Uncle Xuan suddenly shouted: "Wait!"

Naruto froze, and Uncle Xuan quickly intervened.

Uncle Xuan: "If you're channeling chakra into one sword, you should do the same for the other. Otherwise, the test isn't fair. If it's fine, try again. We still have two weeks—plenty of time."

Naruto: "..."

Reluctantly, Naruto channeled chakra into both swords and brought them together.

"Crack..."

The old sword, which had served him well, was cleanly sliced in two, as if it were made of tofu. The new sword, however, showed no signs of damage.

Naruto exclaimed: "Holy—! This is amazing!"

Uncle Xuan grinned: "Of course. With all those precious materials, it's on par with legendary swords. Though, don't compare it to something like the Kusanagi Sword."

Naruto stared at him: "Tell me, did you cut corners on my old sword?"

That sword had cost him 500,000 ryo, most of which went into materials. The labor cost was negligible.

Uncle Xuan rolled his eyes: "That old sword could still cut through iron like mud. Try it on a kitchen knife if you don't believe me."

Naruto did just that. While it wasn't as effortless as Uncle Xuan claimed, the new sword still cut through the knife without a scratch.

Uncle Xuan: "This sword deserves a name. Every great blade should have one."

Naruto, ever respectful, said, "You put so much effort into forging it. Please, you name it."

Uncle Xuan thought for a moment. "When this sword moves, it's like watching a beautiful woman dancing. Graceful and mesmerizing."

Naruto raised an eyebrow: "Are you calling me weak?"

Uncle Xuan snorted: "I'm talking about the sword, not you."

Naruto: "..."

Uncle Xuan continued: "It's like a beauty waving her sleeves. I'll name it Qingxiu—Green Sleeves. Elegant and timeless."

Naruto: "Qingxiu? Green Sleeves?"

Uncle Xuan nodded firmly: "Yes. Qingxiu."

Naruto agreed, and as if in response, a gentle breeze swept through the forge, and the sword seemed to hum softly.

Naruto blinked: "Did I just hear that?"

Uncle Xuan's eyes gleamed as he examined the blade. The sword's surface shimmered like starlight, its patterns shifting subtly.

Uncle Xuan: "This sword... it's alive. You'll need to nurture it."

Naruto: "How? By bathing it? Using incense?"

Uncle Xuan: "By using it in battle. The more it's used, the stronger it'll become."

Naruto: "..."

Now that he had a legendary sword, Naruto realized he didn't actually know how to use it properly.

Uncle Xuan, not wanting the sword to gather dust, quickly carved two wooden practice swords and began instructing Naruto.

Naruto eagerly followed his lead.

Though he had some knowledge of Konoha's sword techniques—like the Dance of the Crescent Moon, which involved creating shadow clones to overwhelm the enemy—he understood that these were more about ninjutsu than true swordsmanship.

Uncle Xuan: "A sword is a weapon of killing. To master it, you must understand fear."

Naruto: "Fear? Of killing?"

Uncle Xuan: "Partly. But as a ninja, your killing intent should be hidden, not overt. Your movements should be like the wind—unpredictable and untraceable."

Naruto: "..."

Fortunately, Naruto wasn't just a twelve-year-old kid. He could grasp the deeper meaning behind Uncle Xuan's words, even if he didn't fully understand how to apply them yet.

Naruto: "Can you show me what to do? I'm a bit lost..."

Uncle Xuan: "You don't need to do anything specific right now. Think of my words as seeds planted in your mind. Over time, through battle and experience, they'll grow into your own understanding of the sword."

"Of course, if you want to truly master this, you'll need to visit the Land of Iron. There, you'll face real swordsmen and learn what true swordsmanship is."

Naruto: "Someone in Konoha did that, right? Like Hatake Sakumo, Kakashi's father?"

Uncle Xuan raised an eyebrow: "You know about him? Impressive."

Naruto: "So, if the seeds are planted, what's next? Do we just stand here holding wooden swords?"

Uncle Xuan chuckled: "No. Use your sword to strike me."

Finally, the two began sparring. Despite Naruto's growing strength, Uncle Xuan's skill with the sword was undeniable. He effortlessly outmaneuvered Naruto, leaving him frustrated but determined.

Uncle Xuan: "From now on, before you start forging each day, we'll spar. You'll learn through practice."

With two weeks left in their one-month mission, Naruto had much to learn—and even more to prove.
