Tale of Conquerors

Chapter 5: The First Recruit

Day 5

The sun was high in the sky as Alexander hauled the last bundle of wood toward the nearly finished storage shelter. It had taken three days to build, and even with the system's guidance, the work had been grueling.

"Efficient, but not efficient enough," Alexander muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. His dark eyes swept over the camp, now showing signs of order: the new shelter, a reinforced fire pit, and the beginnings of a small farm plot.

The system's construction buffs had reduced the time significantly, but the strain of doing it alone was catching up to him. The faint ache in his shoulders was a constant reminder of his limitations.

The system chimed softly, offering a notification.

[Construction Complete: Storage Shelter]

Resource Capacity Increased by 50%.

[New Objective: Recruit Villagers to Join Your Territory]

Progress: 0/2 Recruits.

Alexander studied the notification, his thoughts turning to the village. Today marked two days since his order with the blacksmith, and the promise of iron tools weighed heavily on his mind. The crude flint spear strapped to his back was serviceable but inadequate for the challenges ahead.

He packed his supplies carefully: strips of dried meat, bundles of flint, and a few rolls of wolf hide—extra goods for potential bartering.

"Time to collect," Alexander muttered, setting out toward the village.

Return to the Village

The road to the village felt shorter this time, the path worn smooth by Alexander's previous trips. As he approached the outskirts, he spotted the familiar plume of smoke rising from the blacksmith's forge.

The square was quieter than before, the villagers busy tending to fields and livestock. Alexander's sharp eyes scanned the area, noting the curious glances that followed him.

The blacksmith greeted him with a nod, his soot-streaked face breaking into a faint grin.

"Right on time," the blacksmith said, gesturing to a nearby table. "Your order's ready."

Alexander stepped forward, examining the items laid out: a sturdy iron-headed spear, a hammer with a smooth wooden handle, and a simple iron knife.

"Good work," Alexander said, picking up the spear. Its weight was balanced, the iron tip glinting faintly in the light.

"Didn't skimp on the quality," the blacksmith replied, crossing his arms. "You've got the goods?"

Alexander placed the bundle of wolf hide on the counter, along with a handful of flint stones and dried meat. The blacksmith inspected the goods, his brow furrowing slightly, but he nodded in satisfaction.

"Fair trade," he said. "Anything else?"

"Not today," Alexander replied. "But I'll be back."

Building Trust

As Alexander turned to leave the forge, a young man approached, his wiry frame and bright eyes marking him as someone eager for an opportunity.

"You're the one who's building something out there, right?" the young man asked, his voice tinged with curiosity.

Alexander studied him carefully. "That's right."

The young man hesitated, glancing toward the fields where others were working. "I've heard people talk. They say you've got land. A camp. Room for more."

"I do," Alexander replied simply. "But it's not easy. You'll work harder than you've ever worked, and the rewards will take time."

The young man nodded, determination flickering in his eyes. "I'm tired of plowing fields for someone else. I'll join you."

Alexander's lips curved into a faint smile. "What's your name?"

"Elias," the young man said.

"Pack your things," Alexander said. "We leave at first light."

Day 6: A New Arrival

The next morning, Alexander and Elias returned to the camp. The younger man's eyes widened as he took in the modest structures, his expression a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

"It's… smaller than I expected," Elias admitted.

"For now," Alexander replied, his voice steady. "But this is just the beginning."

The system chimed softly, marking the milestone.

[New Recruit: Elias]

Population: 2.

Worker Assignments Unlocked: Assign tasks to recruits to improve productivity.

Alexander turned to Elias, his tone sharp but not unkind. "There's work to do. Start by reinforcing the fire pit. Use the stones near the stream."

Elias nodded, his wiry frame already moving toward the task.

Plans for the Day

As Elias worked, Alexander began outlining the next steps for their growing territory. The first priority was food. The berries and dried meat wouldn't last long, especially with another mouth to feed.

The system offered a new objective:

[New Objective: Establish a Sustainable Food Source]

Options:Build a Small Farm.Construct Animal Pens.Reward: Unlock Path of Agriculture.

Alexander studied the options carefully. Both were viable, but the farm was more immediately achievable. The small plot he had started would need to be expanded, and with Elias's help, it might be ready within a few days.

Nightfall and Reflection

By the time the sun set, the camp had already begun to feel more alive. Elias's work on the fire pit was rough but effective, and the two of them had marked out the boundaries for the expanded farm.

As they sat by the fire, eating a simple meal of roasted berries and dried meat, Elias broke the silence.

"Why are you doing this?" Elias asked, his tone curious.

Alexander stared into the flames, his dark eyes reflecting their flickering light. "Because I can," he said finally. "And because someone has to."

Elias frowned. "But why here? Why now?"

Alexander glanced at him, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Because this world gives you two choices: survive, or build something worth surviving for."

Elias chuckled softly, shaking his head. "You've got a way with words, boss."

"Get some rest," Alexander said, his tone turning serious. "Tomorrow, we plant the first seeds."
