Tale of Conquerors

Chapter 8: A Strange Priority

Day 10

The morning sun cast long shadows over the camp as Alexander stood outside the newly completed barracks, his iron spear resting against his shoulder. The structure was simple but functional—sturdy walls, a central space for training, and enough room for four recruits to sleep comfortably.

Behind him, Elias and Markus approached, their expressions a mix of curiosity and skepticism.

"So," Elias began, gesturing toward the barracks. "Why build this? I mean, we've got food, we've got shelter. But a barracks? What's the point?"

Markus nodded, leaning on his pickaxe. "It's not like we've got an army to house. Shouldn't we focus on, I don't know, expanding the farm or trading for better tools?"

Alexander turned to face them, his dark eyes calm but sharp. He knew this question would come eventually.

"I get why you're confused," Alexander said evenly. "From your perspective, it doesn't make much sense. But think about this: what happens when predators attack, or when other groups come looking for the resources we've built here?"

Elias frowned. "Other groups? You mean bandits?"

"Bandits, raiders, maybe worse," Alexander replied. "The barracks isn't just a place to sleep. It's where we train, where we prepare. If we wait until the threat arrives, it'll be too late."

Markus crossed his arms, his expression thoughtful. "And you really think someone's coming?"

"I don't think," Alexander said, his voice steady. "I know. This world doesn't stay quiet for long. The barracks might seem useless now, but when the time comes, it'll save our lives."

The recruits exchanged a glance, the weight of Alexander's words sinking in.

Elias smirked faintly. "Alright, boss. You've got a way of making even the weirdest ideas sound logical. I'll give you that."

Markus chuckled, shaking his head. "Fine. You've convinced me. What's next?"

The First Training Session

With the barracks complete, Alexander wasted no time putting it to use. He called Elias and Markus into the central space, where a few crude training dummies stood.

The system chimed softly as they entered, displaying the available training programs.

[Barracks Status: Level 1]

Capacity: 4 Recruits.

Current Occupants: 2 (Elias, Markus).

[Training Programs Available]

Basic Combat Training: Increases combat readiness by 10%.

Alexander turned to the recruits, his tone firm. "Every day, you'll spend an hour here. Learn how to use your weapons, improve your aim, and work together. It's not just about fighting—it's about surviving."

Elias groaned. "More work? Great."

Markus chuckled, picking up a wooden training sword. "You'll survive, Elias. Probably."

A Practical Lesson

The first session was rough. Elias struggled to keep his footing during sparring drills, while Markus's attacks were overly aggressive, leaving him open to counterattacks.

Alexander observed their movements carefully, stepping in occasionally to correct their stances or demonstrate proper techniques.

"Elias," Alexander called, his tone sharp but patient. "Don't overcommit. Keep your weight balanced, or you'll trip."

Elias grumbled but adjusted his stance. "Easier said than done."

"Markus," Alexander said, turning to the larger man. "You're strong, but strength means nothing if you can't defend yourself. Watch your opponent's shoulders—that's where the attack starts."

Markus nodded, his blue eyes focused. "Got it, boss."

By the end of the session, both recruits were panting and drenched in sweat, but their movements were noticeably more fluid than when they'd started.

A New Threat

That evening, as the three men sat around the fire, the system chimed softly, displaying a new notification:

[New Objective: Secure the Territory]

Eliminate 3 Predator Threats.

Reward: Unlock Second Idea for Path of Combat.

Alexander studied the notification carefully, his dark eyes narrowing. Predators weren't just a nuisance—they were a test of the territory's readiness.

"We've got work to do," Alexander said, rising to his feet.

Markus frowned. "What kind of work?"

"Clearing out threats," Alexander replied. "There are wolves near the stream. We need to deal with them before they cause problems."

Elias sighed, rubbing his temples. "More fighting? Can't we just build a wall or something?"

Alexander smirked faintly. "A wall won't stop a wolf from sneaking through. But if we take out the pack, the problem's solved for good."

Markus grinned, hefting his axe. "Let's see if this training pays off."

The Next Step

As the fire burned lower, Alexander leaned back, his thoughts already turning to the mission ahead. The wolves would be their first real test as a team, and failure wasn't an option.

"Get some rest," Alexander said, his voice calm but firm. "We move out at first light."
