Tangled Spells and Stubborn Hearts

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: A Fragile Trust

Ethan's Perspective

The study was eerily silent after the figure vanished. My heart pounded in my chest as I sat there on the cold floor, trying to process what had just happened. My entire body ached, though I wasn't sure if that was from the impact of the blast or the sheer terror of watching Kael stand against whatever the hell that thing was.

"Ethan," Kael's voice broke through the fog of my thoughts, pulling me back to the present. He knelt in front of me, his sharp purple eyes scanning my face with an intensity that made my breath hitch.

"I'm fine," I said quickly, even though I was very much not fine. My hands were shaking, and my mind was a swirling mess of questions. "Just... what was that? And why did it look like Alden?"

Kael's jaw tightened, and for a moment, he didn't respond. His silence only made my anxiety worse.

"Kael," I said, my voice trembling. "You have to tell me what's going on. If I'm stuck here, I deserve to know what I'm dealing with."

He let out a long, slow breath, his shoulders relaxing slightly. "It wasn't Alden," he said finally, his voice calm but firm. "It was... something else. A shadow. A manifestation of magic corrupted by anger and fear."

"Corrupted by who?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

Kael hesitated again, his gaze flickering to the door before returning to me. "That's what I need to find out."

Great. Another cryptic answer. "You don't think it's Alden?" I pressed. "Because he's been acting... weird. Like, super weird."

"Alden is loyal," Kael said, though his tone didn't sound entirely certain. "He's been with me for years. If he has concerns about your presence here, they stem from caution, not malice."

"Right," I muttered. "Caution. Totally normal to act like a murdery ghost when you're being cautious."

Kael stood abruptly, brushing off his coat. "You should rest. We'll talk more in the morning."

I wanted to argue, but the exhaustion hit me all at once, making my limbs feel heavy and my head foggy. "Fine," I said, letting him help me to my feet. "But this conversation isn't over."

Kael's lips twitched into something that almost looked like a smile. "It never is with you."

Kael's Perspective

Ethan's questions lingered long after I escorted him back to his room. The flicker of fear in his green eyes had been impossible to ignore, and for reasons I couldn't explain, it unsettled me.

I returned to the study, my magic swirling faintly around me as I examined the lingering traces of the shadow. It was faint now, barely more than a whisper of corrupted energy, but it was enough to confirm my suspicions.

Someone—something—had deliberately summoned it.

Alden's name hovered at the edge of my thoughts, unbidden. I shook my head, dismissing the notion. He had served me faithfully for decades, his loyalty unwavering even when others had turned away. And yet, Ethan's words gnawed at me.

I needed answers.

---

The castle was quiet as I made my way to Alden's quarters. The air felt heavy, charged with the aftermath of the storm, and the soft glow of magical sconces cast long shadows across the stone walls.

I knocked once before pushing the door open. Alden was standing by the window, his back to me, the faint light of the moon highlighting the silver in his hair.

"My lord," he said without turning. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. "I need to ask you something."

"Of course," Alden said, his voice calm but guarded. He turned to face me, his expression unreadable. "What troubles you?"

"There was an incident in the study," I said, watching him closely for any reaction. "A shadow manifested. It was powerful."

Alden's brow furrowed slightly, his hands clasped behind his back. "A shadow? That is... troubling."

"It resembled you," I said bluntly.

His eyes flickered with something—surprise, perhaps, or anger—but it was gone in an instant. "I assure you, my lord, I had no part in this."

"I know," I said, though my voice lacked conviction. "But Ethan believes otherwise."

Alden's lips thinned. "The boy knows nothing of our world. His presence here is dangerous, my lord. Not just for you, but for himself."

"And yet he remains," I said, stepping closer. "Under my protection."

Alden's gaze held mine, unwavering. "As you wish."

Ethan's Perspective

The next morning, I found Kael waiting for me in the courtyard, his expression as unreadable as ever. He didn't mention the events of the previous night, and I didn't press him. Instead, he handed me a book—a much simpler one than the tomes he usually read—and gestured for me to sit.

"What's this?" I asked, flipping through the pages.

"Beginner's spells," Kael said. "If you're going to stay here, you should at least learn how to defend yourself."

"Defend myself from what?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

Kael didn't respond. Instead, he knelt on the ground, drawing another warding circle in the dirt. "Try again."

---

The lesson went slightly better this time. I still couldn't manage anything close to actual magic, but Kael's patience seemed less frayed, and he even offered the occasional word of encouragement. It wasn't much, but it was enough to keep me from giving up.

By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, I was exhausted but oddly proud of myself. Kael walked me back to the castle, his presence steady and quiet beside me.

"Thanks," I said as we reached my room. "For... you know, not letting me die."

Kael's lips twitched into that almost-smile again. "You're not so easy to kill."

"I'll take that as a compliment," I said, grinning. "Goodnight, Kael."

He hesitated for a moment, his gaze lingering on me before he nodded. "Goodnight."

Kael's Perspective

The days passed in a strange rhythm. Ethan's presence had become almost... routine. His endless questions, his clumsy attempts at magic, his laughter that seemed to fill the empty spaces of the castle—all of it had woven itself into the fabric of my days.

And yet, the shadow of the attack lingered.

I found myself watching Alden more closely, his every movement scrutinized for signs of betrayal. It was a dangerous game, one I didn't enjoy playing, but I couldn't afford to ignore the possibility that Ethan's suspicions were correct.

---

One evening, as the sun dipped low on the horizon, I found Ethan in the library, his head bent over a book. He looked up as I entered, his green eyes lighting up in a way that made my chest tighten.

"Hey," he said, grinning. "Here to make sure I'm not setting anything on fire?"

"Not yet," I said, sitting across from him. "What are you reading?"

"Just some basic spells," he said, holding up the book. "Figured I should try to pull my weight around here, you know?"

"You've already caused enough trouble," I said, though my tone was more teasing than harsh.

Ethan laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "Yeah, but admit it—you'd be bored without me."

I didn't respond, but the thought lingered as we sat there, the quiet of the library settling around us like a cocoon.

---

Ethan's Perspective

I was starting to feel... comfortable here, which was weird considering the whole "magical castle with murdery shadows" thing. Kael was still his usual broody self, but he seemed to be softening around the edges, his sharpness tempered by something I couldn't quite name.

And then everything went wrong.

---

It happened late one night, long after the castle had gone silent. I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, when I heard the faint sound of footsteps outside my door.

At first, I thought it was Kael or Alden, but as the footsteps grew louder, a strange chill swept through the room. I sat up, my heart racing as the door creaked open.

A figure stood in the doorway, cloaked in darkness, its form flickering like a shadow in the wind.

"Who are you?" I demanded, my voice trembling.

The figure didn't respond. Instead, it stepped closer, and the chill in the air deepened.

I scrambled out of bed, my mind racing. I didn't have magic. I didn't have a weapon. All I had was—

"Kael!" I screamed, my voice echoing through the halls.
