The Accidental Rise of a Retired Hero

Chapter 24: Chapter 24: "Unleashing Power"

The village was alive with the sounds of morning—birds chirping, wood creaking as a new structure was being built, and the occasional roar of a monster far off in the distance. But there was something different today.

Kaito had just finished helping a few villagers chop wood when he saw Arielle standing near a large, flat stone in the centre of the clearing. Her hands were outstretched, her eyes glowing with an unmistakable focus.

"What are you doing?" Kaito called out, his voice a mix of curiosity and concern.

Arielle's head snapped toward him, her green eyes sparkling. "I'm just... testing something," she said with a grin.

Kaito raised an eyebrow. "Testing something? What exactly?"

"I think I can do more now," she said, her voice full of mischief. "I mean, I'm pretty sure I have a few... new tricks up my sleeve."

Before Kaito could respond, Arielle's hands crackled with energy, and suddenly, the ground beneath the stone started to shake.

"Uh, Arielle..." Kaito's voice wavered.

Without warning, the stone in front of her exploded into the air, shattering into a thousand pieces. The debris rained down, and a few large rocks fell toward the ground, narrowly missing Kaito. He ducked instinctively, his heart racing.

Arielle let out a delighted laugh, her tails flicking behind her in pure glee. "Whoops! I didn't mean to do that."

Kaito stared at her in shock. "Are you trying to destroy the village?"

Arielle grinned sheepishly. "Maybe just test my limits a little bit..."

Kaito let out a long sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Why do I feel like I'm going to regret this?"

Arielle shrugged. "I mean, you'll be fine. Probably."

Later, Arielle decided to try something less destructive. After all, she didn't want to be the reason the entire village ended up in ruins, especially since Kaito was the one who had to deal with everything.

She found a small group of villagers working by the river. Kaito was watching them from a distance, already recovering from his near-death experience earlier.

"Hey, Kaito!" Arielle called, running over to him. "Watch this."

"What now?" Kaito groaned. He was really not prepared for another demonstration of her powers.

With a determined look, Arielle stretched out her hand, and a gust of wind swept through the area. She snapped her fingers, and suddenly, the entire group of workers, along with their tools, were lifted a few feet off the ground by a gentle wind.

"Arielle, no—!" Kaito started to shout, but it was too late.

The villagers began to laugh, thinking it was some sort of magic trick. Arielle, too, seemed amused by the situation, but she hadn't yet realized the full scope of her new powers.

Without warning, the wind picked up in intensity, and the workers were suddenly flying through the air like ragdolls, shrieking with surprise.

"Okay, okay! I'll let you down!" Arielle said, panicked. She snapped her fingers again, releasing the wind's hold.

The villagers landed with a soft thud, all of them looking slightly disoriented but mostly unharmed.

Kaito's hands were on his hips, a resigned look on his face. "I told you not to test things out so recklessly!"

"I'm sorry," Arielle said, stepping forward. "I didn't think it would be that strong. Are you okay?"

The villagers nodded, laughing in amusement. "We're fine, Lady Arielle. It's just... not something we expected to happen on a normal workday."

Kaito groaned. "Great. So now you're 'Lady Arielle'?"

"I did save the village, after all," Arielle replied with a teasing smile, her ears flicking toward him.

Kaito rolled his eyes. "You've also almost destroyed it, several times."

Arielle grinned again. "I'll get better at it, I promise."

As the day went on, Arielle continued to test her powers in various ways—most of which ended in comical accidents and occasional bursts of raw energy. Meanwhile, Kaito was left in an exhausted state, wondering how he got dragged into yet another mess.

That evening, as they sat together on a log near the fire, Arielle looked at him with a gentle smile.

"You know, I think I'm getting the hang of it," she said softly, looking at her three tails swishing behind her.

Kaito raised an eyebrow. "Getting the hang of... destroying everything?"

She laughed, her tail brushing against his arm. "Not everything. But you have to admit, I'm pretty impressive now, right?"

Kaito sighed, leaning back with a grin. "I'll admit, I'm still a little stunned by your... 'impressive' abilities."

Arielle leaned closer, her gaze softening. "Well, I don't plan on doing anything dangerous again... unless you're around to stop me."

Kaito looked at her, the moonlight reflecting off her sleek skin and glowing eyes, and for the first time in a while, he felt a warmth in his chest that wasn't due to the fire.

"Just promise me you won't blow anything up... unless I'm there to see it."

Arielle winked at him. "Deal."
