Chapter 8: Chapter 8: "Mana Overflow"
Kaito woke up early, as usual. The forest was eerily quiet, the sun barely peeking through the thick canopy above. His cottage was still the same, nestled snugly in the corner of the cursed woods, surrounded by his growing, unintentional "community" of creatures.
The silence was only broken by the occasional rustle of leaves and the far-off call of birds. Kaito stretched and stepped outside, taking a deep breath of the cool morning air. For a moment, it was perfect—peaceful.
Then, it happened.
"Good morning!" A cheery voice called from behind him.
Kaito froze, slowly turning around to see a strange sight: two creatures, both standing upright on two legs, with the body structure of animals—one a fox and the other a large, muscular bear—dressed in mismatched bits of cloth, as if they were trying to mimic humans.
"Wha...?" Kaito blinked in disbelief. "What is this?"
The fox-person—now standing before him with fur that gleamed like polished copper—smiled brightly, her bushy tail flicking excitedly behind her. "Hi, Mr. Kaito! We're here for breakfast!"
The bear-man next to her let out a deep, gruff chuckle. "Yup, we've got a whole new routine. We're, uh, kinda hungry, but don't worry, we'll help around the place later. We've been practicing our... skills."
Kaito rubbed his temples, trying to process what he was seeing. "Hold on a second. You're... animals. Animals," he emphasized, "and now you're... humanoids?"
The fox girl nodded enthusiastically. "Yep! We woke up like this! It's super cool, right? We've got hands, and we can talk, and we've been thinking a lot! It's all thanks to you!"
Kaito sighed, his head spinning. "Okay, so... yesterday you were a fox and a bear, and today you're... this? How—why—what happened?"
"Well," the bear-man said, scratching his chin, "we were hanging around your place last night, just checking out the magic in the air. You know, the thing you're radiating? The forest has been kinda... weird ever since you moved in."
The fox girl grinned. "And then we woke up like this. We think it's because of the mana overflow you've been giving off! It's like, making the forest super magical, and we got caught in it!"
Kaito felt the weight of the situation land on his shoulders. Mana overflow? Of course. He hadn't thought about the consequences of his power in the forest. But it seemed his mana was not only affecting the creatures around him—it was transforming them.
"So... I've turned animals into people," he muttered under his breath. "Great. Just great."
The fox girl stepped closer, tail swishing with enthusiasm. "It's awesome! We've already been practicing walking on two legs, and we're trying to learn how to use tools. We're gonna be super useful!"
"And we'll help you out with the village!" the bear-man added. "We're big and strong now. We can help with the heavy lifting."
Kaito looked at the two of them, utterly bewildered. "This is... definitely not what I had in mind when I came here."
As if to add insult to injury, the ground beneath his feet suddenly rumbled. A loud, guttural roar echoed from the forest, and before Kaito could react, a large figure appeared at the edge of his clearing. A massive wolf—now walking upright, like a humanoid—stepped forward, its sharp eyes locking onto Kaito.
"Hey! You! Alpha!" the wolf-person barked. "We got ourselves a little problem. The other wolves want a meeting."
Kaito stared at the humanoid wolf, his mind racing. "You've got to be kidding me."
The wolf-man's fur was mottled gray and black, his form lean but powerful. He wasn't as cheerful as the bear or the fox; there was a certain edge to his demeanor. "You're the one causing all this, aren't you? You've been changing everything with your magic. The creatures are... evolving, and they want to know what's going on. They're looking at you like some kinda... leader."
Kaito's face contorted in frustration. "I don't want to be a leader! I just want to be left alone!"
But the wolf didn't seem to care. "Too bad. You've got a village now, whether you like it or not. You're in charge, whether you want to be or not. The forest has already decided."
Before Kaito could retort, a voice from behind him spoke up.
"We're here to help!" A small, scrappy-looking raccoon-person appeared, holding a bundle of herbs and plants in one hand. "I've been learning about healing magic! Got a lot of energy now, thanks to the mana!"
Kaito pinched the bridge of his nose. "Great. Just what I needed. A raccoon with healing magic."
The fox girl and bear-man began to chatter excitedly with the wolf, forming an impromptu circle around Kaito, as if they were waiting for orders.
He was surrounded by creatures—now humanoid—eager to help and serve him, none of them seeming to understand that he didn't want any of it.
With a groan, Kaito sat down heavily on the ground. "Alright, alright. I'll figure this out, but if any more animals start walking around on two legs, I'm out of here."
As if on cue, a pair of squirrels appeared from the trees, both now standing upright and chatting in rapid, squeaky voices.
Kaito didn't even bother to respond. He could only rub his temples again as his mana continued to overflow, transforming his "retirement" into an empire of chaos—one that seemed to be growing far faster than he could keep up with.
