The Apocalyptic Evolution.

Chapter 19: Things are heating up

How many supplies could be found in the entire dormitory building? Bai Yi was taken aback by the sight of bags filling the entire room. It became apparent that men tended to be less meticulous than women; Xia He consistently located very practical items in the spaces she had searched.

There was enough food for two individuals to survive for two weeks, hundreds of pieces of sportswear, over two hundred power banks with unknown energy levels, and various small appliances that appeared inconspicuous yet were highly useful. This was just a small portion of the supplies!

After sorting through the items, the two felt exhausted but couldn't suppress their laughter at the abundance before them.

The dynamic of working with a companion was refreshing, eliminating the need to navigate challenges alone. Xia He promptly began preparing dinner while Bai Yi organized and categorized the supplies. With a sufficient stockpile, there was no need to conserve their resources.

Realistically, they couldn't transport everything. For instance, the collection of power banks weighed over 500 kilograms—carrying them would impede their ability to move freely.

Ultimately, they decided to fill two backpacks each and utilize as many of the other items as possible when they departed, planning to return for the rest when circumstances allowed.

At that moment, Xia He learned that Bai Yi's storage capabilities were limited to items created through his own powers, rendering him unable to utilize these ordinary supplies. She couldn't help but express her disdain, leaving Bai Yi feeling somewhat embarrassed.

Bai Yi focused on finding quality, high-capacity power banks and began organizing small appliances that could be powered by these sources.

He gathered a few unlocked cell phones, small table lamps, and flashlights…

He packed everything useful into his bag. Regarding clothing, aside from a few men's items, he included some athletic wear that would fit Chen Li Mei. Finally, noticing there was still a bit of space left, Bai Yi added toiletries like toothpaste and facial cleanser as much as he could!

As a finishing touch, he carefully tucked a bottle of expensive perfume into his pocket, imagining Chen Li Mei's reaction when she received his thoughtful gift, which brought a smile to his face.

Xia He encountered Bai Yi, who was holding instant noodles, and remarked, "You look rather cheerful; what's on your mind?"

Bai Yi cleared his throat, trying to divert attention: "Nothing! Let's eat quickly…" Xia He tilted her head in confusion but refrained from asking further questions. They shared a modest dinner and, as usual, each enjoyed a cup of high-calorie coffee.

Xia He hesitated before glancing at Bai Yi. Noticing her unease, he set down his cup, asking, "Is something wrong?"

She looked up, apprehensively asking, "Are we leaving?"

Bai Yi confirmed, "Yes, we've thoroughly searched this area. There's no point in staying here any longer. We'll depart when the zombies outside have dispersed somewhat."

He thought for a moment and said, "Are you not interested in leaving? You do understand this world is in chaos. Relying solely on oneself makes survival difficult; having more people around increases our safety and strength."

Xia He quickly shook her head, "Of course not! I've wanted to leave for a while… If we leave, could you accompany me to a specific place first?"

Bai Yi raised an eyebrow, "Where do you wish to go?"

Xia He lowered her gaze, biting her lip. However, she stated, "I want to return to the Archery Gym. There are some important items I need to retrieve!"

Bai Yi was taken aback and then chuckled, "Is that all? Alright! If we are able to leave tomorrow, we'll go to the Archery Gym first!"

Xia He's eyes sparkled with surprise, "Really?"

Bai Yi nodded, "Absolutely. I've been at school for a while now and have not visited the archery gym. There should be plenty of weapons there, right?"

Xia He replied confidently, "Certainly! Our archery team possesses more than twenty high-strength bows and arrows alone!"

Bai Yi's enthusiasm grew—what's more crucial in a post-apocalyptic world than food? Weapons!

A reliable weapon can mean the difference between life and death during critical moments.

Looking at his situation, Bai Yi knew that even though he had gained special abilities, without his trusty skull-cutting knife, he'd be vulnerable.

With that realization, Bai Yi resolved that their next destination would be the Gongda University gymnasium!

With a definitive answer in hand, Xia He felt reassured enough to focus on her own needs.

Although tap water was generally regarded as unsafe, Xia He, having special abilities, had no concerns about taking a cold shower.

Though initially hesitant, she felt safe after confirming she was immune to the ordinary toxins. After a long, tiring day, she quickly fell asleep.

Bai Yi, however, remained vigilant and took the night watch.

Having explored his abilities, he leaned against the window, watching the eerie silence of the campus illuminated by moonlight while the subdued sounds of zombies and distant screams resonated in the background…

He wondered what could be happening in the cafeteria now. Was Li Mei getting enough food? He hoped there were no zombies lingering nearby...

Frustrated, Bai Yi scratched his head, feeling an increasing urgency to return to the cafeteria. To clear his mind, he attempted to reach for a bottle of water from his backpack, only to feel something firm beneath his fingertips. Pulling it out, Bai Yi discovered it was Chen Li Mei's diary.

He hesitated, intending to put it back but, perhaps out of longing for Li Mei, he opened the diary, hoping to connect with her through her words…

"June 25: My decision turned out to be correct. The tutoring he provided was indeed effective, and I have been admitted to Long Province University of Technology! I am thrilled with this outcome. Perhaps it's time to move on..."

"June 28: Today, he told me that he also applied to Long Province University of Technology like me. I am at a loss for words... Why does he lack ambition? With his grades, he could easily secure a place at a better university..."

"August 15: I hadn't anticipated how enjoyable it would be to have him accompany me during college. He helps me navigate challenges effectively. My roommates envied our connection..."

"November 12: Wow, I didn't expect the college to offer such abundant resources. If I had known, I wouldn't have disclosed that I have a boyfriend. Yesterday, he didn't even offer to assist me with online shopping; Meili and the others actively stepped in to help..."

"January 18: He suggested meeting my parents. Absolutely not! I refuse to bring him home. It seems I can't procrastinate any longer; after the Chinese New Year, I'll end this..."

"May 20: I had a disagreement with him today. He stood me up and left me in the rain! Had he not promised to buy me new cosmetics, I would have confronted him! However, I feel like I'm not getting what I need from him anymore. He's even mentioned marriage? I should break things off as soon as I receive the gift. By the way, Meili's introduction to that handsome senior with a wealthy family running a mine is intriguing... I should stop here; I feel a bit unwell…"

Bai Yi flipped through the pages, his expression blank, gripping the notebook tightly as his fingers turned pale.

Upon finishing the last entry, he silently stored the diary away, waking Xia He to watch over him, then lay down with the quilt wrapped around himself, falling into a restless sleep.

Seeing Bai Yi cocooned in a blanket like a large worm, Xia He stifled a yawn. At that moment, she felt as though the air itself had chilled when he stirred to wake her.

Bai Yi kept his eyes shut tightly, despite tears trickling down his cheeks...

The anguish of his heart felt unbearable; Bai Yi pressed his hand against his chest.

He previously believed that actors' emotional portrayals in dramas were exaggerated, but now he recognized the authenticity of that pain; heartache was indeed agonizing!

Bai Yi felt as though his heart was shattered into fragments. Each recollection of happier times with her collided with the harsh truths detailed in the diary.

"Bai Yi! Bai Yi!" Xia He glanced at the time and couldn't resist approaching him, nudging him gently. Bai Yi remained unresponsive.

Upon realizing his stillness, she was taken aback. After spending a few days together, she knew how alert Bai Yi typically was; even the slightest noise would awaken him immediately!

"Bai Yi, please wake up, it's time for breakfast!" Xia He, feeling a bit anxious, grabbed the quilt and pulled it off him. A rush of heat escaped the blanket, startling her. Upon closer inspection, she quickly discerned that Bai Yi's condition was concerning.

Right then, Bai Yi was feverish, breathing rapidly with a flushed face, curled tightly, seemingly oblivious to his surroundings…

"What's happening to you, Bai Yi?" Xia He exclaimed in alarm. She pushed him a few times but was frightened by the intense heat radiating from his body. Even without a thermometer, she could tell he had a fever!

After a moment of uncertainty, Xia He swiftly rummaged through the drawers for the medication she'd classified the day before, finding the one to reduce fever quickly.

She hurriedly administered the medicine to Bai Yi, not worrying about being gentle, attempting to get him to drink half a bottle of water to swallow the pills.

Seeing that Bai Yi's clothes were drenched in sweat, Xia He made a quick decision to move the unconscious Bai Yi to her own bed. After some hesitation, she blushed and gently removed his clothing…
