Chapter 29: Nightmare's Edge
Ru tried to warn the father by pointing to the under of the bed with his eyes. The man pointed his gun there and moved forward. Then he suddenly ducked.
Ru covered his ears to protect himself from the gunshots, but the father rushed out from under the bed. He motioned for Ru to come out as he moved toward the closet.
Ru acted by the father's directive. Because, first of all, the man was a police officer. He stood up and quickly left the room. He closed and locked the door. He passed the mother waiting in the hallway with a baseball bat and slipped over the railing. After all, the fate of Jenna's family was of no concern to Ru.
As the mother rushed down the stairs, Ru searched for any object she could use as a weapon. Just then, two shots rang out.
Bang! Bang!
Struggling sounds were heard. The mother stood on the steps and looked up.
Bop!
Smash!
Bop!
The woman cautiously climbed the stairs. Ru picked up the poker from the fireplace and leaned his back against the wall that separated the kitchen from the living room for half of its length. He kept one eye on the back door in the kitchen, planning to escape in case of danger.
The sounds of fighting from above grew louder and louder.
Bop! Bop!
Pow!
Wham!
PWAAAMM!
POW!
Bam!
Splash!
Blap!
There was a muffled, full-throated, staccato scream.
"Aaa-ah!"
Then there was a creaking sound.
Creak!
Squeak!
Moans joined the creaking.
"Ah, ah!"
And sounds of friction...
Swish, Swift...
"Ah!"
"Oh!"
"What the fuck is this? Are they fucking," Ru grumbled. His curiosity got the better of him. He stepped off the edge of the kitchen wall and into the living room. He rolled behind the seating group.
He could not trust his own eyes when he looked at the stairs from there.
"Wha?"
What flowed down the stairs was something that stained each step red. It was blood.
Ru held his breath and tried to calm his pounding heart. The metallic smell of blood filled the air and made him sick. Even though he gripped the fireplace poker with both hands, he could not find the courage he needed.
He was torn between the urge to run and the need to know what was happening.
His hands shook, but his eyes remained focused on whatever was causing the commotion. As Ru backed toward the kitchen, he witnessed the moment when a body fell from above. And he heard the sound of it hitting the ground.
THUD!
It was the mother lying on the floor and it looked like all her bones were broken.
Ru swallowed the scream that was about to come out of his mouth and ran without looking back.
He tried to rush outside in panic but realized that the door was locked. His eyes quickly scanned the kitchen. He chose the window right above the sink as his escape point. Then, he climbed onto the countertop and threw himself outside from the window.
As he landed on the ground, he bent his knees slightly, then quickly got up and started moving away.
... And he continued to run without looking back. All he could think about was escaping.
When Ru advanced through the dark streets, a myriad of questions flooded his mind. What was the Red Hooded Man? Was he truly a vampire, or something else? Who was the sorcerer demanding the seal of the djinn? If this was a simulation, how could he escape from here?
He paused at a street corner, gasping for breath. Survival and the end of this nightmare was the only solution he had.
As Ru continued to move through the streets, he slowed his pace and began to look around carefully. He needed to reach a safe place as soon as possible, but he didn't know where to go. As his eyes scanned the dark streets, he suddenly heard a sharp scream from a nearby alley.
"Help me! Please, let me go!"
Ru shuddered. The sound carried a familiar sense of desperation. His eyes swiftly darted towards the direction of the scream. He made his decision and started running in that direction in haste.
As soon as he reached the street corner, he was met with a sexual harassment scene. He saw two figures in conflict: one was the Red Hooded Man and the other was a young woman.
The girl's arms and face were covered in blood, but she was resisting. The Red Hooded Man, on the other hand, was viciously attacking. Ru made his decision in an instant.
"It's time to improve my skills," Ru thought.
He planned to quickly approach the attacker from behind. He was already looking forward to the moment when he would take his revenge on the loser with the red hood.
Ru took off his cute house slippers and gripped the fireplace poker with all his might. Stealthily, he approached them from behind. And he kept getting closer and closer. Until he was within striking distance of the target.
Finally, he struck the man's head hard.
The man let out a scream of pain and trembled for a moment but quickly regained his composure. With anger flashing in his eyes, he turned towards Ru and drew a knife.
"Another little chick! I'm so lucky tonight, ha ha," the man taunted.
"You are not that. So, who the hell are you," Ru said, disappointment evident in his voice. Then he added with a maniacal grin, "Never mind, I'll be your killer!"
