The Court Strategist: Kenji Fukui’s Rise

Chapter 4: The New Coach, The Quick Attack, and a Rivalry Renewed

Kenji's footsteps echoed lightly as he walked into the Karasuno gym. The faint sound of shoes squeaking on the polished floor and the rhythmic thud of volleyballs greeted him. The gym felt alive, brimming with energy and purpose.

Takeda-sensei stood near the center, practically beaming. Beside him was a tall man with messy blond hair and a sharp gaze. His presence was magnetic, commanding the attention of everyone in the room.

"This is Ukai Keishin," Takeda announced. "He's agreed to become our new head coach!"

Ukai crossed his arms, his eyes scanning the team. "I'm not here to babysit," he said bluntly. "Karasuno's going to rebuild itself into a powerhouse. That means no slacking, no excuses, and no shortcuts. If you're not ready to give it everything, you're wasting my time."

The team straightened, their focus snapping to attention. Daichi stepped forward, his voice steady and resolute. "We're ready, Coach."

Ukai smirked faintly. "Good. Let's get started."

As practice wrapped up that evening, Takeda and Ukai called the team together. A stack of neatly folded black jerseys sat on a table nearby, the bold orange numbers standing out against the fabric.

"This is a big moment," Takeda said, his voice warm and enthusiastic. "Today, the first years officially join the team. You've all worked hard to earn this."

Hinata's eyes widened, and he bounced slightly on his toes. "We get our jerseys today?"

"Yep," Ukai said, glancing at the excitable first year. "Let's hope you've earned them."

Takeda picked up the first jersey. "Shoyo Hinata. Number 10."

Hinata's face lit up as he took the jersey, holding it like it was the most precious thing in the world. "It's the same number as the Little Giant!"

Next was Kageyama. "Tobio Kageyama. Number 9."

Kageyama accepted his jersey with a quiet nod, his usual stoicism in place, but Kenji caught the subtle pride in his expression.

"Kenji Fukui. Number 8."

Kenji's hand shook slightly as he took the jersey, his heart pounding. This was more than just a number—it was proof that he belonged. He could almost hear his grandfather's voice, urging him forward. Slowly, he stepped forward to take it, the smooth fabric cool against his palms.

"You've earned this," Takeda said with a kind smile.

Kenji nodded, his throat tight. "Thank you."

Tanaka leaned over, grinning. "Welcome to the club, first years! Don't mess it up."

Daichi clapped his hands. "All right, let's show them why wearing these jerseys matters. Practice match against Nekoma tomorrow. Be ready."

Practice the next day began with the usual drills, but under Ukai's sharp watch, every movement felt more deliberate. His constant observations and corrections forced the players to push themselves harder. Kenji was running reception drills when Ukai called out across the gym.

"Hinata! Kageyama! Show me that quick attack Tekeda has been talking about."

Kenji paused, curiosity piqued. He'd overheard teammates talking about Hinata's incredible speed and Kageyama's precise sets, but he hadn't seen them in action. He leaned against the wall, watching intently.

Hinata crouched low, his body coiled like a spring. His eyes locked onto Kageyama, who held the ball with an almost eerie calm. Then, in a blur, it happened. Kageyama's toss flew through the air, perfectly timed with Hinata's sprint. Hinata leaped, connecting with the ball in midair and slamming it onto the court before anyone on the opposing side could react.

Kenji's jaw dropped. "How… how is that even possible?"

Hinata turned to him, grinning. "Cool, right?"

"Yeah," Kenji muttered, still processing. "But how does it even work?"

"It's not magic," Kageyama interjected, his tone matter-of-fact. "It's practice, timing, and trust. That's it."

Kenji watched them reset, his mind racing. Volleyball isn't just about brute force. It's about precision, strategy, and trusting your team.

The thought sparked something inside him, a connection to the lessons his grandfather had taught him. Anticipate. Adapt. Surprise.

A week later, the gym buzzed with anticipation as Karasuno prepared for their long-awaited practice match against Nekoma. The rivalry had been dormant for years, but the tension in the air made it clear that neither side had forgotten.

Kenji sat on the bench for the first set, watching as the game began. Karasuno started strong, with Kageyama's precise sets and Hinata's quick attacks earning them a 5–2 lead.

But Nekoma quickly adapted. Their libero, Yaku, seemed to predict every spike, positioning himself perfectly to dig even the fastest attacks. Nekoma's setter, Kenma, moved with an almost lazy demeanor, but his sharp eyes missed nothing. His clever feints and pinpoint sets allowed Nekoma's hitters to exploit gaps in Karasuno's defense, turning the tide.

The first set ended 25–18 in Nekoma's favor.

Ukai called out during the break. "Kenji, you're in for Tanaka."

Kenji felt his stomach tighten as he stepped onto the court. His first few plays were shaky—his nerves got the better of him, and he mistimed a spike, sending it into the net. On the next rally, Yaku anticipated his attack, digging the ball effortlessly and setting up Nekoma's counter.

"Kenji, stay focused!" Daichi called, clapping him on the shoulder during a brief timeout. "You've got this."

Kenji focused on the court like it was a chessboard, watching for the smallest of patterns. Yaku's positioning… Kenma's set placements… every move counted.

As the game continued, Kenji began noticing subtle shifts in Nekoma's play. Yaku favored one side of the court during cross-court spikes, leaving narrow openings down the line. Kenma's tosses, while deceptively slow, often betrayed his target with a brief glance.

Midway through the set, Karasuno was trailing 18–15. Kenji's chance came when Daichi's spike was blocked, and the ball ricocheted toward the back of the court. Nishinoya dived for a spectacular save, keeping the ball in play.

The ball soared toward Kenji, who stepped in instinctively. His analytical mind worked quickly. Hinata's open on the left. The blockers are late. Set it to him.

Kenji sent a calculated set to Hinata, who slammed the ball past Nekoma's defense. The scoreboard ticked up: Nekoma 18–16 Karasuno.

Cheers erupted from the bench. Daichi grinned. "Nice read, Kenji!"

With his confidence growing, Kenji began contributing more. He adjusted his spikes, aiming down the line instead of cross-court to exploit Yaku's positioning. He timed his blocks better, forcing Nekoma's hitters to alter their shots.

At 24–23, with Nekoma at set point, Kenji noticed something crucial: Kenma wasn't looking at any of his hitters.

It's a decoy.

"Watch the back row!" Kenji shouted.

Sure enough, Kenma set to Yaku in the back row, but Nishinoya was ready, digging the ball cleanly. Kageyama followed with a set to Asahi, who powered it through Nekoma's blockers to tie the score.

Though Karasuno ultimately lost the set 27–25, the team left the court with their heads held high. Kenji, in particular, felt a sense of accomplishment.

As the teams lined up to bow, Ukai approached Kenji, his expression unreadable. "You've got potential," he said finally. "Keep sharpening that analytical edge. It'll make you a key player."

Kenji nodded, his determination solidifying. For the first time, he felt like he belonged—not just on the team, but in the game.

Walking home that evening, the memory of his grandfather's voice echoed in his mind. Anticipate. Adapt. Surprise.

He looked up at the darkening sky, a quiet smile on his lips. This was just the beginning.
