The Covenant Seal

Chapter 16: Grounds of Perdition

The air inside the study was heavy, the hum of dissipating mana still reverberating faintly. Evelyn held Ava tightly, her hands trembling as she whispered reassurances into her youngest daughter's ear. Nathaniel stood nearby, scanning the room with sharp, calculating eyes that seemed to take in every detail.

"We don't have much time," Lila said, her golden glow flickering faintly. "I feel like I keep saying this, but things are going to get a lot worse here. We need to go."

"What do you mean by that?" Nathaniel asked, his voice calm but edged with urgency.

Lila hesitated, her golden eyes meeting his. "I don't have time to explain everything right now, but, basically, there's an unquantifiable amount of energy, called mana, pouring into the Riftwilds from a parallel universe. This Riftwild energy is unstable. Earth has never experienced anything like this. The huge influx of mana is twisting the space around us, and undoubtedly everywhere in the Riftwilds, changing the very fabric of this house. Soon, it won't just be creatures breaking through. The house itself could collapse—or worse."

Nathaniel's expression darkened. "What are the Riftwilds?"

Luke answered, "That's the name Lila has given the Ozarks."

Nathaniel's brow furrowed, and he looked from Lila to Luke and back again. Then, as if just noticing that Lila wasn't touching the ground, his mouth dropped open.

Lila shook her head. "Yes, yes, I can float. We'll chat about that later."

Evelyn took it all in stride and stepped forward, asking, "Are the grounds any safer?"

Lila's expression became inquisitive, "No, they aren't. At least I don't see how they could be. I do believe this house, along with who knows how many other places throughout the Riftwilds, is a focus point of the mana for some reason. It seems to be focusing on this place and gathering here. That's undoubtedly what drew the Chimera Wolves. Those creatures are terrifying, but there are much worse things out there; things from the Aetherion Universe that would shake you to your core. What we need to do is leave here now and get to safety."

"Everhearth," Luke said, his voice firm despite the weariness that clung to him. "It's the closest safe zone. We can make it there."

Nathaniel looked at his son, his eyes narrowing slightly. "You're certain?"

"I am," Luke said, holding his father's gaze. "We've fought through enough to know what's out there. The only chance we have is to keep moving."

Nathaniel nodded once, the barest hint of approval flickering in his expression. "Then we don't waste any more time."

Evelyn glanced at Nathaniel, her voice soft but insistent. "Nathaniel, are you sure we can make it out? The house isn't exactly... empty."

Nathaniel placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We'll get through it, Honey. Together."

The heavy, oppressive atmosphere of the Riftwild energy pressed down on the group as they retraced their steps through the mansion. The once-familiar halls felt alien now, their twisting shadows and faint hum of mana making each step more harrowing than the last.

Luke led the way, his body aching and his mana reserves dangerously low, but he pushed forward. Behind him, Nathaniel walked with quiet resolve, his protective instincts kicking in as he kept a hand on Evelyn's back, guiding her forward. Sophia and Ava stayed close, with Aiden bringing up the rear, his tension radiating in the form of clenched fists and a nervous bounce in his step.

"Where are we headed?" Nathaniel asked, his voice steady despite the chaos around them.

"The garage," Luke replied. "If the SUV is still functional, it's our best chance. On foot, we're too exposed."

Lila floated beside him, her golden glow dimmed but her focus unyielding. "Good plan," she said. "But we'll need to act quickly. The creatures won't stop hunting us just because we leave the house."

"They can try," Nathaniel said tersely. "They'll find we're not easy prey."

Luke glanced at his father. The flicker of approval he'd seen earlier had grown into a quiet respect, but there was no time to dwell on it now. "Stay sharp," he said. "We're almost there."

The group pushed through the final hallway, the door to the garage standing slightly ajar. Lila hovered closer to inspect it. "No traps," she said, her voice low. "But the Riftwild energy is stronger here. Be ready."

Luke nodded, gripping the door handle. With a deep breath, he pushed it open.

The garage was eerily intact compared to the rest of the house. The sleek, black SUV stood out in the center, its polished surface untouched by the chaos that had engulfed the mansion. Tools hung neatly on the walls, and the faint smell of motor oil lingered in the air.

"It's still here," Evelyn said, her relief palpable.

Nathaniel opened the door and reached inside, pulling out the key fob. "Let's move."

As the family piled into the vehicle, Luke took the passenger seat beside his father. Evelyn and Ava sat in the middle row, while Aiden and Sophia climbed into the back, his restless energy making him fidget as he glanced nervously at the garage door.

Nathaniel pressed the start button, and the SUV roared to life. The sound seemed to echo unnaturally, the vibrations reverberating through the garage like a signal to whatever lurked outside.

"Open the door," Nathaniel said.

Lila hovered near the garage's manual release. Her golden glyphs flared briefly, and the door groaned as it began to rise. Fog rolled in immediately, thick and clinging, as if reluctant to release them from its grasp.

"Stay ready," Luke said, his voice taut. He could feel the Riftwild energy swirling outside, coiling like a predator preparing to strike.

Nathaniel gripped the wheel, his eyes locked on the opening. "When we move, we don't stop."

The door clanged fully open, revealing the overgrown driveway and the dense fog beyond. Once Lila was securely inside the vehicle next to Ava, Nathaniel didn't hesitate. He slammed his foot on the gas, and the SUV surged forward, its tires screeching against the concrete as they shot into the night.

The fog swallowed them immediately, the mansion disappearing behind them as the vehicle roared down the winding driveway. The headlights cut through the gloom, illuminating twisted vines and distorted shadows that seemed to pulse with mana.

"They're coming," Lila said suddenly, her voice sharp.

The first creature appeared out of the fog—a massive, lion-like beast with glowing blue eyes and claws that left trails of mana as it ran. It kept pace with the SUV, its powerful strides eating up the ground.

Lila closed her eyes and Luke knew what she was doing. She was reaching out to the beast, sensing what it was and what its intentions were.

"It's something called a Riftfire Leonis," Lila said. "It's fast and relentless. Don't let it reach the vehicle."

The second creature emerged moments later, a hulking, bear-like monstrosity with elongated claws that scraped against the pavement. Its shadowy form seemed to absorb the light, making it difficult to track.

Lila repeated her previous actions, closing her eyes, her expression focused and intense.

"This is an Umbra Ursid," Lila continued. "It'll try to slow us down."

And then a third appeared—a serpentine figure weaving through the fog with unnerving speed. Its body shimmered like a mirage, and its fangs dripped glowing venom.

"Etherscale Viper," Lila said. "I can tell what these creatures are using my senses, and I can sense that they're each quite intelligent. For some reason they are driven to destroy us, and are very capable of doing so. It doesn't feel… personal… though. It's like they're drawn to something, but I don't think it's us. Anyway, we have to go faster."

She looked into Luke's eyes intensely, conveying the direness of their situation as if he wasn't already well aware of it.

Nathaniel's hands tightened on the wheel.

Luke's mana veins flared faintly as he reached for what little energy he had left. "I can hold them off. Just keep driving."

"Hold on," Nathaniel said, his hands steady despite the chaos. "I've handled worse roads."

The Riftfire Leonis lunged first, its claws swiping at the rear of the SUV. Aiden shouted as the beast's glowing eyes loomed close to his window.

"Not today," Luke muttered. He summoned a barrier, the Bet symbol on his forehead glowing weakly. The shimmering shield flared to life just as the Leonis struck, its claws scraping against the mana-infused surface.

Aiden's fists clenched as he stared at the Leonis through the window. "Damn it…" he muttered under his breath.

The beast roared in frustration, but Luke held firm, his arms trembling from the effort. "Keep going!" he shouted.

Nathaniel didn't need to be told twice. He swerved sharply, forcing the Leonis to break its stride. The Umbra Ursid appeared next, charging from the side in an attempt to ram the vehicle. Nathaniel braked hard, the SUV skidding just out of reach as the beast barreled past.

"That thing's not slow," Nathaniel muttered, steering the vehicle back on course.

The Etherscale Viper darted in next, its coiled body moving with terrifying speed. It struck at the tires, its venomous fangs glancing off the spinning rubber.

"Lila!" Luke called.

"I've got it," she said, her glyphs flaring. A burst of golden energy shot from her hands, striking the Viper and sending it slithering back into the fog. "But it won't stay down for long."

The creatures regrouped, their glowing forms barely visible in the fog as they kept up with the SUV. Luke gritted his teeth, sweat dripping down his face as he maintained the barrier. His mana veins throbbed painfully, but he pushed through the exhaustion.

"They're not giving up," Sophia said, her voice tense.

"They will," Nathaniel said, his eyes fixed on the road. "We just have to outlast them. We need to get to the main road where we can outpace them."

The Riftfire Leonis lunged again, this time leaping onto the roof of the SUV. The vehicle shuddered under its weight, and Ava screamed as its claws tore into the metal.

"Luke!" Aiden shouted.

"I'm on it!" Luke raised a second barrier, encasing the roof in shimmering light. The Leonis roared as the shield forced it off balance, and Nathaniel swerved sharply, sending the beast tumbling to the ground.

Aiden's knuckles turned white, his jaw tight as he watched Luke hold the barrier.

The Umbra Ursid charged again, its massive claws raking against the rear bumper. The impact sent a jolt through the SUV, but Luke reinforced the barrier, keeping the creature at bay.

"We're almost there," Nathaniel said, his voice calm but firm. "Hold on."

The creatures made one final push, their glowing forms closing in on all sides. Luke poured the last droplets of his mana into the barrier, the Bet symbol on his forehead flaring brightly as the shield expanded outward, forcing the beasts back.

The SUV burst through the gate at the edge of the estate, the metal hinges snapping as the vehicle tore down the road. The creatures hesitated, their forms flickering as they grew further from the nexus point that was now at the center of the Hale Estate.

"They're stopping," Lila said, her voice laced with relief. "They won't follow us past the gate."

Nathaniel didn't slow down, his hands steady on the wheel as the SUV sped toward safety. A half hour passed in the blink of an eye and before they knew it, the glow of Everhearth appeared faintly on the horizon, a beacon of hope in the darkness.

Luke slumped back in his seat, his body trembling from exhaustion. His vision blurred at the edges. He could barely feel his fingers, the mana drain leaving him hollow.

Evelyn reached forward, her hand resting gently on his shoulder. "You did it," she said softly. "You kept us safe."

Nathaniel glanced at him, his expression unreadable but his tone sincere. "Good work, son."

Luke met his father's gaze, a flicker of pride mixing with the exhaustion in his eyes. "We're not safe yet," he said, his voice steady despite the strain. "But we're close."

As the family drove toward Everhearth, the tension in the vehicle began to ease. For the first time since the chaos began, they felt a glimmer of hope. Together, they had survived the horrors of the Riftwilds.

One thing Luke knew for certain: he needed to get stronger.
