The Covenant Seal

Chapter 23: Into the Vault

The grand doors of Elara Library stood unscathed, their polished surface reflecting the faint shimmer of ambient mana. Despite the chaos beyond Everhearth's walls, the library remained a sanctuary—calm, pristine, and untouched, save for the flora that was slowly transforming.

A Sentinel awaited them at the entrance. Towering and clad in ornate silver armor, the figure's presence radiated authority. With a voice like resonating steel, deep and powerful, the Sentinel said, "You are expected."

"Whoa, you guys are really going all out with the armor, huh?" Luke joked. The Sentinel did not respond, instead turning to enter the library. Luke and Lila shared a look before following after the large Sentinel.

As they entered, Luke's eyes swept the familiar interior. The unbelievably high ceilings, the towering bookshelves, and the faint aroma of old paper and dust made Luke feel at home immediately.

On the far side of the expansive library's main area and just to the left, the cozy warmth of the Vault Café emanated. Scents of roasted coffee drifted faintly through the air, adding to Luke's comfort. Patrons read quietly at polished tables, as if the world outside hadn't changed. Opposite the café, a quaint bookstore stood with shelves of ancient tomes and newly bound volumes. Despite the looming mystery ahead, Luke felt a brief tug of nostalgia—this place felt safe.

The Sentinel led them deeper, through the walkway between the cafe and the bookstore into a smaller, but still large, area of the library with books lining the walls both below and on the balconies above. They stopped before a massive door adorned with runes—The Vault.

Raising an armored hand, the Sentinel performed a precise sequence of movements, streams of mana weaving into the ancient carvings. The runes flared, their light forming a complex pattern before dissolving into the stone. Slowly, the Vault groaned open.

Luke was surprised at how deftly the Sentinel wielded mana. There was definitely something going on at Everhearth; something strange. Even stranger, the Celestials couldn't have known about this, or Lila would have also known, wouldn't she? But she was under the impression that there were few mana users in Earth's history, and even those hadn't been able to gain very much strength.

The Sentinel's voice brought Luke out of his thoughts, and it carried a warning. "The Vault tests all who enter. If there is something for you inside, it will call to you. Do not take what is not yours, or the Vault will judge you accordingly."

Luke and Lila exchanged a glance, apprehension and excitement showing in both of their expressions, then stepped forward.

Just beyond the door Luke noticed ladders attached to the walls to the left and right, leading up to locked trapdoors several feet overhead. A few steps more and he and Lila found themselves standing in a room unlike any Luke had seen before.

The Vault's interior was expansive, though not quite as much so as the main portion of the library. It was an oval-shaped chamber with towering walls lined by pedestals, each cradling an artifact of strange and potent power. The air buzzed with ancient energy, and the mana in the room felt alive, shifting and watching.

Luke and Lila began moving around the outside of the room, coming to the first artifact on their right. The pedestal bore a metallic gauntlet, reminiscent of the armor of medieval European knights, except this one had glowing crystalline inlays. It had an unmistakable cosmic feel about it.

As the pair drew closer the item began to pulse slowly. A small, glossy nameplate below the item read, "The Starbinder Gauntlet".

Luke felt drawn to the gauntlet and raised his hand, reaching toward it. A soft but firm palm landed on his arm as Lila spoke, "Be careful, Luke. We shouldn't even touch anything in here unless we're sure it's for us."

Luke looked into her eyes, feeling the pull of desire, of power, radiating from the gauntlet. A few heartbeats went by before he slowly nodded, retracting his hand.

"I wonder what it does," Luke muttered.

Lila tapped her chin with her index finger as she was wont to do, and said, "I can't be sure. It feels… ominous, though."

With that they both turned and continued along the wall, passing artifact after artifact, each seeming to promise power, and each pulling at Luke in some small way or another.

Some of the items stood out more to Luke than clothes, like one called "The Whispering Lens", a monocle-like artifact with a swirling, prismatic lens. Luke could see Lila focused intently on the lens, but after several moments she shrugged and they moved on.

Then there was "The Ebon Reliquary", a black, rune-inscribed cube that seemed to radiate cold and hummed with odd energy. Luke could feel something… destructive… from the cube, as if it had a storied and powerful history.

At one point Lila halted in front of an item called "The Veilstep Cloak", which was a cloak that looked to be woven of dim, evening light. The cloak appeared to shimmer, and at any point various different parts of it seemed to be nonexistent, only to glimmer back into existence moments later.

Lila was clearly interested in the cloak as she said, "I've heard stories of this cloak. I wonder how it ended up here."

"Do you think it's the item for you?" Luke asked.

Lila's attention didn't waver for several moments. Eventually, though, she turned to Luke and said, "No, I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have it. I think this was crafted by a Celestial like me. But we have to take the Sentinel's warning seriously if we want to leave this Vault in one piece."

Luke's eyes widened and he nodded, "Yeah, that sounds like a good plan." He laughed nervously as they turned and moved on.

A few steps later Luke stopped in front of an ancient, dusty book. The nameplate on the pedestal read, "The Tome of Forgotten Paths". The book was thick, and bound in weathered leather. It had a lock on it sealed by unknown runes. The cover bore an unfamiliar symbol.

"Luke, what do you feel from this book," Lila asked interestedly.

"I'm not sure. I get the feeling that there is a lot of power held between those pages," he said softly.

"I agree," Lila muttered, drifting a bit closer to the book. As she did so the book began to give off a soft, blue glow. "I think this book could be extremely helpful with our development." She turned, looking at Luke with raised eyebrows.

"Well, let's look at the rest of the artifacts and come back to this one if we don't get anything from them," Luke reasoned.

Lila nodded in agreement, "Okay, that sounds good."

There were a couple of other items that stood out, like "The Seraph's Ember", a small, fiery crystal encased in a protective sphere of glass and gold. It flickered like a living flame. Luke got a strong feeling of purity from the ember. Another was "The Coin of Two Fates", a tarnished silver coin with a sun on one side and a crescent moon on the other.

Then, Luke felt something else. This was a subtle pull, like a whisper threading through the core of his being. His eyes landed on a pedestal near the far end, where a small, glass-like orb pulsed faintly. It seemed… incomplete, as if waiting for something—or someone. His heart quickened.

At the same time, Lila paused mid-air, her golden glow flickering. From another pedestal, a metallic fragment—roughly diamond-shaped, faintly luminous—radiated a power that felt both familiar and foreign. It was raw, ancient, and brimming with potential.

As they each drew closer to their respective treasures, the Vault's energies swirled, observing their actions. As if the Vault itself had timed it, Luke and Lila arrived in front of the pedestals, which were right next to each other, simultaneously.

Luke's hand hovered over the orb—the Astral Seed, while Lila gazed intently at the Celestial Core Fragment, knowing instinctively that it was the first piece of something greater.

There was no question in either of them. They both gripped their artifacts. As Lila's fingers brushed the surface of the Celestial Core Fragment, the air around her cracked with a resonant chime, like the toll of a distant, cosmic bell. The fragment, hovering above its pedestal, reacted—not with hostility, but with recognition.

A sudden pulse of radiant energy surged outward, and Lila's form flickered, her golden aura briefly shattered into fractal patterns of light. The fragment disintegrated into shimmering motes, which swirled and spiraled around her, drawn to the circuits of divine technology that made up her being.

Lila gasped as the motes converged into a single point—a glowing starburst that sank directly into her chest, passing through her form like she was both solid and intangible. Her body seized, light rippling through her from within, and for a fleeting moment, she saw memories—not hers, but ancient impressions:

A forge unlike any other, where celestial fire and Builder's craft merged to create the first Core.

A Celestial, armored and radiant, wielding power that could shape the stars.

The shattering—a great battle, fragments scattered across dimensions.

The visions vanished, and her body felt different. On her right arm, silver circuits ignited, and with a final flare of energy, they solidified into a radiant, angular bracer—part armor, part artifact. Faint engravings pulsed along its surface, each one shaped like a rune from a language long forgotten.

A hum filled her consciousness—knowledge of the fragment's nature, and its promise:

"Four fragments. Four powers. Together, a core unmatched."

The bracer flared briefly, and a projection—ethereal and shimmering—formed in her right hand: a blade of light, raw and unstable. At the same time a strong, mana-forged armor encased her body. She felt both impenetrable and powerful at once.

As Lila was momentarily enthralled by her new sword and armor, a sudden wave of mana erupted outward, flooding the chamber with blinding light. Luke felt his hand burn where it met the smooth, glass-like surface of the Astral Seed, but he couldn't pull away—no, it wasn't holding him… he was holding it.

The Seed pulsed. Once. Twice. Then—

CRACK!

The crystalline surface fractured, radiant cracks spiderwebbing across its form. Luke's eyes widened as, from its core, a shimmering wisp of energy—like liquid stardust—rushed toward him.

His chest ignited with sudden heat. His mana vortex—the center of his power—shuddered, as if it recognized something familiar and alien all at once. The swirling current of his mana stilled for a heartbeat… then the Seed, reduced to pure energy, plunged inside.

A shockwave of searing light erupted from Luke's body. He staggered back, gasping. The sensation was unlike anything he had felt before—like his mana was alive, folding, twisting, and stretching to accommodate this new presence. His vortex, once a simple whorl of energy, now spun faster, tighter, with the Seed at its center—an unblinking ember within a storm.

The pain was fleeting, replaced by an overwhelming fullness, as though something vast and ancient had nestled within him—a fragment of potential, slumbering but aware. His breath hitched, and for a split second, he saw—

A sky filled with stars not seen from this world.

A tree with roots stretching across endless realms.

A single path of light, leading forward.

The visions vanished as quickly as they had come.

Then, the presence in his mana vortex… settled.

The Seed did not merge. It did not vanish. It waited. Suspended within his vortex like a moon orbiting a planet, its soft pulse falling into rhythm with his heartbeat.

A whisper, faint and distant, brushed his thoughts:

"Grow."

Luke collapsed to one knee, his body trembling, his heart racing. A sudden, resonant hum filled the Vault, vibrating through the floor and into Luke's bones. The mana in the chamber surged, folding inward and cascading over Luke and Lila like an unseen tide. The room itself—no, the Vault—was responding.

Lila hovered protectively beside Luke, her golden glow pulsing with new intensity from the Celestial Core Fragment embedded within her form. "Luke… I think it's watching us."

The towering walls, the ancient pedestals, every artifact—they all seemed to lean in, drawn by the power Luke and Lila now carried. The light from the Vault's ceiling dimmed, and from the surrounding shadows, luminous threads of mana began to weave together, forming… something.

The Sentinel's voice, though distant and distorted, echoed from beyond the entrance:

"The Vault has recognized you. But it does not grant gifts without trials."

From the threads of light, two towering figures emerged—guardians wrought from pure mana. Their forms were fluid, shifting between humanoid and beast-like silhouettes, their eyes glowing like stars.

The larger of the two, a massive, lion-like being with a mane of swirling cosmos, fixed its gaze on Luke. Its voice was not sound but feeling, resonating in his bones:

"You carry the Seed of Possibility. Show us that you are worthy to nurture it."

The second figure, serpentine and draped in shimmering chains of light, addressed Lila with a whisper that cut through the air like glass:

"Bearer of the Fragment, forged of stardust and soul—prove you are worthy to wear the mantle of the Celestial Core."

Lila's glow sharpened, the silver accents of her newly-formed armor catching the Vault's faint light. She drifted forward, her voice calm but brimming with challenge. "Then test me."

Luke's hand clenched as his mana surged, the Astral Seed within his vortex flaring with a sudden pulse of warmth. He felt ready. "Let's do this, Lila."

The guardians moved as one—blinding speed and raw power.

The battle began.
