The Crescent Moon in the Starry Forest is just a Giant Kitten~

Chapter 04 - VS Woodman

VS Woodman

One day, I woke up as usual at my sleeping place, nestled at the base of an old giant tree in the heart of the forest. It was morning already.

Stretching myself after getting up, I then began to groom my fur. As a cat, grooming is essential.

Sitting down, I unabashedly stretched my hind legs wide and licked up to my lower belly with my tongue. I did my best to clean up to where my tongue could reach on my back.

(Well, I’ll be off then.)

Once ready, I looked up at the old tree that served as my bed and conveyed my thoughts silently. Then, with a soft “Meow,” I left the spot.

Where should I go today? Every day is so idle that it’s quite challenging to fill the time.

Wandering through the forest, I encountered a small-green-old man – a goblin. Dealing with them by giving a cat punch each time was too bothersome, so I ran away. Goblins attack anyone, but they don’t have an obsession with anyone in particular, and besides, they have short legs, so they easily give up.

As I walked through the forest, I encountered not only goblins but a variety of creatures.

There were eyeball-like brown furballs – harmless fairies, colorful birds, and golden shining beetles. Some creatures were immediately recognizable as fairies or mythical beasts, while others were uncertain if they were mythical beasts or ordinary animals.

By the way, the fairies with wings and small bodies are relatively common in the forest. They approach me curiously and sometimes accompany me for a walk.

(This forest is lively and nice. It doesn’t feel lonely.)

I’m a cat, so I don’t flock like wolves. But if I were alone, I’d get lonely after all.

(Oh, an apple!)

Spotting a red fruit ahead, I casually wagged my tail. Although I wasn’t starving, seeing the delicious-looking red apple made me want to eat it.

There are some poisonous fruits in this forest. But they usually have conspicuously poisonous colors, so this glossy apple should be fine.

I plucked the apple with my mouth. It’s hard to select just the apple with such a big mouth. I accidentally picked some leaves, too. But oh well, I’ll eat them together.

The apple was juicy, sweet, and delicious. This forest bears various fruits regardless of the season.

While munching on the apple, I carefully looked at the surrounding trees.

(Is there a big and thick tree somewhere?)

All the trees in this forest are fine, but I want a thicker one. If it’s about as thick as my body, it would be perfect for scratching. I feel bad scratching on thin trees because they might break, and I feel sorry for leaving scratches on them.

The other day, when I ate a Life Star, there was a nice and sturdy tree that seemed just right for scratching, but was it a bit to the east? But it might be pitiful to scratch the same tree over and over again.

I have to be careful about various things with this big body.

While thinking about such things and wandering around in search of a good tree for scratching, I eventually found one that seemed suitable.

It was about the same height as the surrounding trees, but there was a thick, hefty tree.

It seemed firmly rooted to the ground and sturdy, so it should be okay for me to scratch on it. Thinking so, I approached the tree.

However, at that moment—

“Meoww!?”

The thick branch of the tree in front of me moved like a snake and swiftly wrapped around my body.

The branches entwined around my body, and I was quickly restrained. Although my body wasn’t lifted because it was heavy, it was as if I were a bug being restrained by spider silk, unable to move.

(What!?)

While struggling desperately by fluttering my legs and tail, I heard a hoarse old man’s laughter from nearby.

“Haha! I’ve caught a big catch!”

As soon as he finished speaking, I felt something leaving my body. Something invisible was being taken away little by little. It seemed like energy was being drained, as the old man said.

(What should I do?)

It seems like I won’t be strangled right away, but if this continues, I’ll eventually become a mummy. My claws and fangs, which would be weapons, couldn’t reach the branches entwining my body, and I couldn’t even punch because I was restrained.

“Meow!”

Damn it! I protested loudly.

“Ha! Struggling is futile. You can’t escape!”

Despite his confident expression, the old man’s attention was focused elsewhere, which gave me an opportunity. I mustered all my strength and suddenly broke free from the restraint.

“What!?”

And then, I unleashed a full-force scratch on the old man’s face.

“Gwaaah!”

As my claws scratched his face, the old man let out a low scream.

The surprise attack worked, but lingering too long was dangerous. After delivering a blow, I immediately turned around and ran away from the spot.

And when I reached a place where the tree branches couldn’t reach me, I felt a little relieved. I turned around and raised my tail triumphantly.

“Take that! Bye-bye!”

Although the old man was angry, I didn’t go back.

Heh heh, see you later!

The next day, feeling idle again, I went back to the old man’s place. When I thought back on our fight before going to bed yesterday, I realized it was quite fun.

So, to play with him again, I bounced and ran to the old man’s place.

When the old man saw me, he was surprised and raised his voice.

“Hey! Damn cat! Why are you skipping over here looking so happy?”

Then, furrowing his brow and sneering, he continued.

“I’m not your playmate! I let my guard down yesterday, but I won’t go easy on you today! Once I catch you, I’ll suck your energy and kill you!”

Approaching slowly as he grumbled, the branches reached out towards me. However, the branches only extended to a certain length and wouldn’t grow any longer. It seemed that they couldn’t suddenly grow and extend.

I carefully assessed this limit, and while avoiding getting caught by the branches, I slapped, slapped, and slapped at the branches that came one after another.

“Take that!”

Although the old man was getting frustrated, I was still having quite a bit of fun.

After playing for a while and feeling moderately tired, I groomed myself.

“Phew, I’m tired…”

The old man seemed tired, too. He slumped his branches and breathed heavily.

It felt like some time had passed, so I decided to head back for today since I was tired of playing with the old man.

I stood up and meowed.

(I’ll come again!)

“Don’t you dare come back!”

It seemed like the old man couldn’t hear my thoughts, but we managed to have a conversation.

But it was fun, and I’ll come again tomorrow, so wait for me!
