Chapter 109: Mortem Totalum
"You seem very cheerful today, Evelyn."
"Of course! It's Halloween, so there will be a magnificent feast, and nothing can spoil the meal. After all, there's no troll, no Basilisk. The only thing that could possibly happen is a Dementor interrupting the feast, but the teachers and all capable wizards will repel them with their Patronuses."
I was already salivating at the thought of the meal. Even if the pumpkins weren't as impressive as two years ago, they were juicier.
"What are we doing today since we're not going to Hogsmeade?"
"We're studying the divine magic of the Incas, which I just received."
I have a research team stationed in every place where there are legends of gods because, in reality, they were just sorcerers from the divine era.
I've been working with Gringotts, and one of Ron's brothers is collaborating with us in Egypt.
"Shouldn't we ask Hermione to join us?"
"Great idea."
We found Hermione as she was leaving. Using the excuse of a girl talk, we pulled her aside and invited her.
In the end, she will join us in a few hours because the Time-Turner isn't strong enough to take her that far back.
We spent the entire day studying and marveling at what was considered basic in their time, but is now seen as impossible.
One of the most striking discoveries was information about Avada Kedavra.
"I was sure it wasn't an instant death curse."
If we compare it to video games, this Unforgivable Curse deals a fixed amount of damage—enough to be fatal under normal circumstances. But with enough vitality, it would only cause severe damage instead of death.
The problem is that very few people have such high vitality. I don't even know if there are any left in this world.
"Shouldn't Harry have enough, since he's the Boy Who Lived?"
"Hermione, magic isn't that simple. What Harry's mother did was a very risky gamble. She had to perform a ritual first and then die while protecting her son. After that, Voldy had to kill him immediately and wasn't allowed to attack anyone else. It's important to note that this entire sequence of events had to happen in less than five minutes. So if Voldy had taken him somewhere for a sacrificial ritual instead, he would have still been there."
As I told Marie when explaining who Harry Potter was, Harry is just a figurehead. In reality, the true heroine is his mother, but she was dead and a Muggle-born, so another hero had to be chosen to put an end to this reign of terror.
While looking deeper into the research, we came across the real Death Charm.
"Mortem Totalum."
This spell guarantees the instant death of a person and can even kill a group of people if they are close enough.
The only problem with this charm is the overconsumption of energy. A powerful sorcerer of our time, like Dumbledore, should know that casting just one spell would leave them exhausted and defenseless.
And if an ordinary person tried, they would die, and the spell wouldn't even work.
I think Marie could use it once, but I don't want to test it because it's too dangerous.
After discussing this charm and becoming utterly convinced that another equally dangerous charm exists, we went to the Halloween feast.
As usual, it was delicious, and nothing interrupted it.
"Hermione, Marie, you should try this pumpkin pie; it's better than usual."
