chapter 263 - Not Qualified Yet
Adele was indeed eager to hunt down the vampires who had wronged Wofoo, to unleash her fury upon them. But Xiao Ai’s presence, and its potential allure to other vampires, gave her pause.
“It’s better to stay put for now,” she said, “and wait for them to come to us.”
“Wofoo, you don’t mind if we don’t actively seek out points or Blood Essence, do you?”
Wofoo, wanting to embrace Adele but hesitant, simply said, “Of course not. Those things… don’t matter to me anymore.” Before meeting Adele, they had mattered, but now, being by Adele’s side was enough.
Adele, touched by Wofoo’s words, returned the girl’s hesitant embrace, a warmth spreading through her heart.
“So, we’ll stay here and… tie the knot?” Wofoo asked, her heart pounding.
“Pfft! Tie the knot? That sounds terrifying!” Adele giggled. “You mean ‘set up camp.’ But I think it’s a good idea. Let’s find some branches and leaves and use magic to build a simple tent.” If she had wood magic, it would be even easier, but Adele couldn’t access the Secret Realm’s ambient elemental magic. Xiao Ai, however, seemed to be able to block other mages from using it, as evidenced by Wen Xi’s failed attack.
“After the tent is set up, we can…” Adele’s voice trailed off, a mischievous glint in her eyes, making Wofoo blush.
“I-I’ll go find the materials! Adele, wait for me here!” Wofoo offered, eager to escape the sudden intimacy.
“Okay~”
Wofoo hurried towards the wooded slopes, keeping within sight of Adele, her werewolf vision allowing her to monitor the girl’s safety even from a distance. She gathered branches and leaves, her mind filled with images of building a cozy nest for her and Adele, a safe haven in this dangerous realm. She wouldn’t mind staying here with Adele, hidden away from the chaos, until the trial ended.
Wofoo returned with an armful of branches and leaves, her energy seemingly boundless. Adele, meanwhile, struggled with the magic, her first attempt resulting in a… cat bed. I want a house for humans! she thought, frustrated. It seemed First Snow’s influence was stronger than she had anticipated. But after some experimentation, she managed to reshape the branches, forming a sturdy frame for their makeshift tent. It was a tedious process, but Adele found a certain satisfaction in building something with her own hands, a feeling she hadn’t experienced before.
Just as she was about to complete the tent, she realized the pile of materials was gone. She looked towards the slopes, but Wofoo was nowhere to be seen. A knot of worry tightened in Adele’s chest. She must have just gone further to find more materials, she told herself, but she couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease. She set off towards the slopes, determined to find Wofoo. Even if it meant playing the role of the damsel in distress, she wouldn’t abandon her friend.
Wofoo, however, wasn’t in danger. Just… incredibly embarrassed. She had encountered another vampire, one of Adele’s “wings”: Celeste. The blonde girl looked slightly disheveled, her breath coming in short gasps, her ample breasts heaving, as if she had just been running, or perhaps fighting. If it was a fight, it must have been an easy victory, judging from her relaxed demeanor. Elemental vampires, after all, preferred ranged combat, avoiding close-quarters skirmishes whenever possible. But even if forced into close combat, Celeste was no pushover. She held a ball of fire in her hand, ready to unleash its fury upon the Body Technique vampire who seemed to be stalking her: Wofoo.
Wofoo’s appearance was almost comical. Dressed in her hoodie and pants, her hood pulled low, her face impassive, her wolf-like eyes fixed on Celeste, she clutched an armful of branches and leaves, as if preparing to… build a fire? It was a display of… domesticity that Celeste had only ever seen from Adele.
“I know you,” Celeste said, offering a cautious truce. “So, we can coexist peacefully, right?” She had witnessed Adele’s… interaction with Wofoo at the ball and, despite a pang of jealousy, had decided that Wofoo, as a potential ally to Adele, was worth befriending.
Wofoo, however, didn’t respond, her mind filled with memories of Adele at the ball, surrounded by her admirers, radiant and untouchable. Wofoo, hiding in the shadows, had felt a pang of longing, a desperate desire to claim Adele for herself, even if just for a little while. The Blood Trial had given her that opportunity, a chance to realize her dream. But it hadn’t lasted long enough, and now, encountering Celeste… it was a cruel reminder of her own inadequacy. She knew Celeste was here for Adele, a fellow competitor, a rival for Adele’s affections. Celeste, however, seemed oblivious to the tension, her intentions purely amicable.
“Please believe me, I don’t want to fight you,” she said sincerely. “I just want to pass through here. And if you need Blood Essence, there’s a cave I passed earlier, you might find some there.” She even offered to share her resources, a gesture of goodwill that only deepened Wofoo’s sense of unease. Celeste’s devotion to Adele was undeniable, her willingness to sacrifice even her own chances in the trial a stark contrast to Wofoo’s own selfish desires.
“Go… somewhere else!” Wofoo growled, her voice hoarse, the words surprising even herself. She had to keep Celeste away from {N•o•v•e•l•i•g•h•t} Adele, to protect her fragile dream, the illusion of a connection, of a shared understanding. She released the branches and leaves, her body tensing, a dangerous aura emanating from her. She didn’t want to fight Celeste, not really, but she couldn’t bear the thought of Adele being… taken from her.
Celeste frowned, confused by Wofoo’s hostility. What’s her problem? she thought, a touch of annoyance creeping into her voice. “Fine, I’ll leave.” But before turning away, she asked, “Have you seen Adele? If you have, tell me where she went.”
“…N-no,” Wofoo lied, her fingers digging into her palms. She wasn’t good at lying, but the words came out instinctively, a desperate attempt to protect her secret.
Celeste, sensing Wofoo’s hesitation, narrowed her eyes, but she couldn’t imagine why Wofoo would lie. She turned to leave.
Just then, a voice called out from behind Wofoo, “Wofoo! Where are you? Don’t scare me! Wofoo!” Adele, having spotted Wofoo, ran towards her, her voice filled with relief.
But as she reached Wofoo, her eyes widened in surprise, her gaze drawn to the figure standing behind Wofoo.
“Celeste!!!”
“Master!”
Celeste whirled around, her heart leaping at the sound of Adele’s voice. She ran towards Adele, their embrace a joyful reunion, Adele nuzzling against Celeste’s breasts, her face buried in their soft warmth.
Celeste, her emotions a rollercoaster, had gone from despair to elation in an instant. She returned Adele’s embrace, her heart overflowing with happiness.
But Wofoo, frozen in place, her expression a mask of despair, watched their reunion with a mixture of longing and… resentment.
Celeste, her initial joy fading, turned to Wofoo, her eyes cold. The wolf-girl averted her gaze, unable to meet Celeste’s accusing stare. Celeste had almost been fooled, but she sensed the lie in Wofoo’s denial, the hidden truth of their encounter. She understood Wofoo’s feelings, her possessiveness, her desperate desire to keep Adele for herself. But understanding didn’t mean acceptance. This was the difference between a wolf and a dog.
“So Master had already found Wofoo,” Celeste said, her voice laced with a subtle accusation.
Wofoo’s heart sank, her carefully constructed facade crumbling.
Adele, oblivious to the tension between them, simply replied, “Yeah! We’ve been together all along~ I was so lucky, after entering the Secret Realm, only one Sequence Three vampire bothered me.”
“Are you alright, Master!?” Celeste asked, her concern for Adele overriding everything else.
“Hmph, just a Sequence Three, I easily dealt with her, and then I met Wofoo,” Adele said, puffing up her chest slightly. “I wanted to build a tent to rest, so I asked Wofoo to gather some materials.”
“I was a little worried when she didn’t come back for so long, so I came looking for her, and here you are, chatting!” Adele, still oblivious to the underlying tension, assumed they had been having a friendly conversation.
“Yes,” Celeste replied, her voice flat, “we were having a… delightful chat.” For some reason, she decided not to reveal Wofoo’s lie, her deception.
Adele, taking both their arms, led them back towards the spot where they had been building the tent, oblivious to the awkwardness radiating from both girls. As they walked, she suddenly remembered the materials they had left behind. The tent was almost finished!
Celeste and Wofoo returned to the woods, gathering more branches and leaves, following Adele back to their campsite. Wofoo kept her distance from Celeste, while Celeste, catching up to the wolf-girl, said, “I don’t hate you.” It was the first time she had spoken directly to Wofoo, and the words made Wofoo’s shoulders tense.
Then Celeste continued, her next sentence leaving Wofoo speechless, “But if you want to stay by Master’s side… you’re not qualified yet.”
