The Demon of Desire: the rise of the slum rat

Chapter 25: Chapter 25: The Trials Begin

The twisted landscape of the Hollow Verge loomed before them, its oppressive energy pressing down like a tangible weight. Mikhael stood at the forefront, his crimson eyes fixed on the jagged path ahead. The artifact pulsed faintly against his chest, its energy thrumming like a second heartbeat.

Kael and Koneko flanked him, their expressions tense but determined. They had traveled far, and now the first of Mikhael's trials awaited, hidden somewhere within the cursed expanse.

"So," Kael said, breaking the silence. "Any brilliant ideas on what we're walking into?"

Mikhael smirked faintly, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. "Nothing good."

"That's reassuring," Koneko muttered, her golden eyes scanning the shadows.

The Call of the Artifact

As they pressed forward, the artifact's whispers grew louder, a constant, grating murmur in Mikhael's mind.

"Prove yourself... take what's yours... show them your strength..."

He clenched his fists, forcing the voices back. This wasn't the time to falter.

Koneko glanced at him, her sharp gaze filled with concern. "The artifact again?"

"Always," Mikhael replied, his voice tight.

She didn't press further but stayed closer to him as they walked, her presence grounding him in a way he couldn't explain.

The First Trial

They reached a clearing where the air felt unnaturally still. At the center stood a massive stone archway, its surface etched with glowing runes. A low hum emanated from the structure, resonating with the artifact's energy.

"This must be it," Kael said, their tone a mix of awe and caution.

The runes flared to life as Mikhael approached, casting the clearing in an eerie light. A voice echoed from the archway, deep and commanding:

"Enter, bearer of Greed, and prove your worth. Only through fire shall you rise."

The ground beneath Mikhael's feet trembled, and the archway's interior filled with a swirling vortex of golden light.

"Well, that's not ominous," Koneko said dryly.

Mikhael turned to her and Kael, his expression serious. "Stay here. This is something I have to do alone."

"Are you sure?" Koneko asked, her voice tinged with worry.

He nodded. "If this thing is going to keep pushing me, I need to push back."

Kael sighed but didn't argue. "Don't die in there. I'm not hauling your body out."

Mikhael smirked faintly. "Thanks for the vote of confidence."

With that, he stepped through the archway.

A World of Flames

Mikhael emerged into a vast expanse of fire and ash. The ground beneath him was scorched and cracked, glowing veins of molten lava cutting through the landscape. The air shimmered with heat, and the sky above was a swirling mass of dark clouds and embers.

"Great," he muttered. "Just what I needed. A sauna."

The artifact pulsed against his chest, its whispers growing sharper.

"Destroy them... claim their power... or be consumed..."

Ahead of him, a figure materialized from the flames. It was humanoid but distorted, its body wreathed in fire and shadow. Its molten gold eyes burned with malice, and its voice echoed with unnatural resonance.

"Bearer of Greed," the figure said. "You seek mastery, but you lack the strength to claim it."

"We'll see about that," Mikhael growled, drawing his blade.

The Battle Begins

The fiery figure lunged, moving with blinding speed. Mikhael activated Shadow Step, narrowly avoiding the attack and reappearing behind his opponent. He slashed with the artifact blade, but the figure twisted unnaturally, dodging the strike and countering with a burst of flames.

Mikhael raised his arm to shield himself, the heat scorching his skin. Gritting his teeth, he activated Charge, his speed and power surging as he closed the distance.

Their blades clashed, sparks and embers flying with each impact. Mikhael's movements were precise and relentless, combining Muay Thai elbow strikes with fluid sword techniques to keep the figure off balance.

The Artifact's Influence

As the battle raged, the artifact's whispers grew louder, urging Mikhael to unleash its power.

"Give in... let me guide you... only then can you win..."

For a moment, Mikhael hesitated, the temptation almost overwhelming. But then he heard another voice—a soft, steady presence cutting through the chaos.

"Mikhael," Koneko's voice echoed faintly, her earlier words replaying in his mind. "You're not doing this alone."

He exhaled sharply, forcing the whispers back. "Not this time," he muttered, his grip on the blade tightening.

Unleashing Wrath

Drawing on his inner reserves, Mikhael activated Rising Dragon, his body moving with explosive speed. He struck the figure's core with a powerful palm strike, the force sending it stumbling backward.

The figure snarled, its form flickering as it began to lose cohesion. Mikhael didn't let up, delivering a series of devastating blows that shattered its defenses.

With one final strike, he drove the artifact blade through the figure's chest, releasing a burst of energy that consumed it in flames.

A New Strength

The fiery landscape began to dissolve, the heat fading as Mikhael found himself back in the clearing. The archway's glow dimmed, and the runes etched into its surface faded.

Koneko and Kael rushed to his side, their expressions a mix of relief and curiosity.

"You're alive," Kael said dryly. "Color me surprised."

Mikhael smirked faintly, slipping the artifact blade back into its sheath. "Told you I could handle it."

Koneko's golden eyes searched his face. "Did it help? Did you... get stronger?"

Mikhael nodded, his crimson eyes burning with newfound resolve. "Yeah. But there's more to do."

The artifact pulsed faintly against his chest, its whispers subdued but not silenced. The first trial was over, but the path ahead was far from clear.
