Chapter 27: Chapter 27: The Hollow Verge’s Wrath
The deeper they traveled into the Hollow Verge, the more the air seemed to close in around them. The oppressive weight of the cursed land pressed on Mikhael, Koneko, and Kael like an unseen force. The trees were twisted and gnarled, their branches forming claw-like shapes that seemed to reach for the group as they passed.
"This place doesn't feel right," Koneko said, her golden eyes scanning their surroundings.
Kael nodded, their gaze darting to the shadows. "It's not just the magic here. The entire area feels alive—hostile, even."
Mikhael remained silent, his crimson eyes fixed ahead. The artifact pulsed faintly against his chest, its whispers drowned out by the sounds of the forest—a low, guttural growl that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
The First Encounter
As they moved deeper into the Verge, the growling grew louder, more distinct. Mikhael held up a hand, signaling the group to stop.
"We're being watched," he said, his voice low.
Koneko's claws flexed instinctively. "From where?"
Before anyone could respond, the ground beneath them erupted in a shower of dirt and debris. A massive beast lunged from the shadows, its body a grotesque amalgamation of flesh and bone. Its four legs ended in jagged claws, and its elongated jaw was lined with rows of serrated teeth.
"What the hell is that?" Kael shouted, scrambling back.
"A Verge Stalker," Mikhael said, drawing his blade. The artifact flared to life, its glow cutting through the darkness. "Stay close. These things hunt in packs."
The Pack Strikes
As if on cue, three more Verge Stalkers emerged from the shadows, their glowing yellow eyes locking onto the group.
Mikhael activated Shadow Step, disappearing from view as the first stalker lunged at him. He reappeared behind the creature, delivering a swift slash to its hind leg. The stalker howled in pain, its movements faltering as it turned to face him.
Koneko darted toward another stalker, her small frame moving with feline grace. Her claws slashed at the creature's side, drawing dark ichor that sizzled as it hit the ground.
Kael hurled a glowing orb at the third stalker, the explosion briefly stunning it. "They're tougher than they look!"
"They're regenerating," Mikhael said, his blade cutting through the first stalker's neck. The creature collapsed, but its body began to knit itself back together almost instantly. "Aim for the cores—they're in their chests!"
A Desperate Fight
The group fought with precision, their attacks coordinated despite the chaos. Mikhael's blade flashed as he activated Charge, his strikes growing faster and more powerful. He targeted the glowing veins running along the stalkers' bodies, disrupting their regeneration.
Koneko leaped onto the back of one stalker, driving her claws into its chest and tearing at its core. The creature howled in agony before collapsing in a heap.
Kael used a combination of explosive orbs and runic traps to keep the remaining stalkers at bay, their movements calculated and efficient.
But the beasts were relentless, their numbers seemingly endless.
"This isn't working," Kael shouted, dodging a swipe from one of the creatures. "We'll get overwhelmed at this rate!"
The Artifact's Power Unleashed
Mikhael gritted his teeth, the artifact's whispers growing louder with each passing second.
"Unleash me... take their power... end this..."
He hesitated, but the sight of another stalker lunging for Koneko made his decision for him.
"Fine," he muttered. "Just this once."
The artifact flared to life, its glow intensifying as dark energy coursed through Mikhael's body. His movements became faster, more precise, as if guided by an unseen force. He struck with blinding speed, his blade cutting through the stalkers' cores with surgical precision.
One by one, the creatures fell, their bodies disintegrating into ash as the artifact drained their energy.
A Moment of Calm
As the last stalker collapsed, the forest fell silent once more. Mikhael lowered his blade, his breathing ragged. The artifact's glow faded, and the whispers quieted to a faint hum.
Koneko approached him cautiously, her golden eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Mikhael said, though his voice was strained. "It's... under control."
Kael glanced at the ash-covered clearing, their expression grim. "That was close. Too close."
Mikhael sheathed his blade, his crimson eyes scanning the forest. "The Verge isn't done with us yet."
Foreshadowing the Next Challenge
As the group pressed on, the oppressive atmosphere grew heavier, and the sounds of distant growls echoed through the trees.
"This place doesn't want us here," Koneko said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It doesn't matter what it wants," Mikhael replied, his gaze fixed ahead. "We're not leaving until we find what we came for."
The chapter ends with the group venturing deeper into the Hollow Verge, the shadows growing darker and the air thicker with the promise of more dangers ahead.
