The Eternal Dao Sect: Legacy of Chaos

Chapter 11: Chapter 8: A New Alliance

---

The descent from the Infernal Peaks was just as grueling as the climb. Though they had secured the Artifact of Fire, the group's victory came at a cost—physically and emotionally. Each step felt heavier, their bodies worn from battle and the mountain's unforgiving terrain.

Jayson held the glowing shard of the artifact and felt its warmth seep through his skin. Its power pulsed faintly, as if alive, resonating with him. It was a strange sensation, comforting and overwhelming.

"I still can't believe we took down a Flame Titan," Lucas muttered as he walked beside Jayson. His tone was a mix of awe and exhaustion. "Those things are supposed to be legends."

"Well, congratulations," Mike said, chuckling weakly. "We're officially part of the legends now."

Janet shot him a tired glare. "Let's just hope the rest of the artifacts don't come with their own personal monsters."

"Wishful thinking," Diane said, wiping soot from her cheek. "If anything, it'll get harder from here."

Jayson remained silent, his mind turning over the events of the battle. The Flame Titan had been unlike anything they'd faced before, and he couldn't shake the feeling that it was only a prelude to something far worse.

The Arrival at Emberfall Village

By the time they reached the base of the mountain, the sun was high in the sky. The once-scorching heat of the Infernal Peaks gave way to a more tolerable warmth as they approached Emberfall Village—a small settlement nestled in the valley.

The village was bustling with activity. Farmers tended to their fields, blacksmiths hammered away at glowing steel, and children ran through the streets, their laughter filling the air. The sight was a stark contrast to the chaos and danger they had just left behind.

"This place seems. peaceful," Sarah said, her bow slung over her shoulder.

"Looks can be deceiving," Victor replied, scanning the area with a wary eye. "Let's not let our guard down."

As they entered the village, a group of villagers approached them, their expressions a mix of curiosity and caution. At the forefront was an elderly man with a long beard and piercing eyes.

"Travelers," the old man greeted, his voice strong despite his age. "You've come from the Infernal Peaks, haven't you?"

Jayson stepped forward, nodding. "We have. Who are you?"

"I am Elder Magnus, the leader of Emberfall," the man replied. "It's rare for anyone to survive the peaks, let alone return with an artifact. You must be the ones we've heard whispers about—the ones seeking to unify the world's power."

---

A Warning from the Elder

The group exchanged uneasy glances. The fact that their mission was already being talked about unsettled them.

"How do you know about us?" Diane asked, her voice calm but firm.

Elder Magnus chuckled softly. "Word travels quickly, even in a world as divided as ours. Your actions have not gone unnoticed. But beware—the more you accomplish, the more enemies you will make."

"We're already aware of the dangers," Jayson said. "But we can't stop now. There's too much at stake."

Magnus nodded solemnly. "Indeed. But there is something you should know. The artifacts you seek are not merely keys to power. They are linked to the very fabric of this world. Disturbing them comes with consequences."

"What kind of consequences?" Lucas asked, frowning.

"The artifacts are tied to the balance of the elements," Magnus explained. "As you gather them, you disrupt that balance. The energy you felt on the mountain? That was the mountain's reaction to losing its core. The more artifacts you take, the more unstable the world will become."

The group fell silent, the weight of Magnus's words sinking in.

So, what are you saying?" Mike asked. "That we shouldn't go after the artifacts?"

"I'm saying you must tread carefully," Magnus replied. "If you continue on this path, you must be prepared for the consequences. And you must ensure that the artifacts do not fall into the wrong hands."

An Unexpected Ally

As the conversation continued, a commotion broke out near the edge of the village. A group of villagers ran toward Magnus, their faces pale with fear.

"Elder Magnus! A stranger has entered the village!" one of them shouted. "He claims to be searching for the artifact!"

The group tensed, their hands instinctively going to their weapons.

"Let's go," Jayson said, leading the way.

They followed the villagers to the center of the village, where one figure stood tall, surrounded by fidgeting onlookers. The man was large and imposing, his armor gleaming in the sunlight. A huge battle axe was slung across his back, and his piercing gaze scanned the crowd.

"Who are you?" Jayson demanded, stepping forward.

The man turned to face him, a smirk playing on his lips. "My name is Kael. I'm a wanderer, and I'm here for the Artifact of Fire."

"You're too late," Diane said, narrowing her eyes. "We've already secured it."

Kael's smirk widened. "I figured as much. You're the ones everyone's been talking about, aren't you? The group trying to unite the artifacts."

"Why does it matter to you?" Joyner asked, his spear at the ready.

Kael shrugged. "Because I want in."

The group stared at him in disbelief.

"You want to join us?" Jayson asked, his tone skeptical.

"Exactly," Kael replied. "I've been traveling the world for years, searching for a purpose. And from what I've heard, your mission might just be it. Besides," he added with a grin, "you'll need someone like me if you're planning to take on the Mellians."

Testing the Stranger

"We don't just let anyone join us," Victor said, his hand on his sword hilt. "How do we know we can trust you?"

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Trust is earned, not given. Tell you what—why don't we settle this the old-fashioned way? A duel. If I win, I join your group. If I lose, I'll walk away."

Jayson hesitated, glancing at his friends.

"Let me handle this," Lucas said, stepping forward. Lightning crackled around his fingertips as he smirked at Kael. "I've been itching for a fight anyway."

Kael chuckled, unslinging his axe. "You've got guts, kid. Let's see if you've got the skill to back it up."

The Duel

The villagers formed a wide circle as Lucas and Kael squared off in the center. The air was thick with tension, the anticipation palpable.

Kael struck first, swinging his massive axe with surprising speed. Lucas dodged nimbly, countering with a bolt of lightning that struck Kael's armor. Sparks flew, but Kael remained unfazed.

"Not bad," Kael said, charging forward. "But you'll have to do better than that!"

Lucas dodged again, his movements fluid as he launched a flurry of electric attacks. Kael blocked each one with his axe, the blade absorbing the energy.

"You're strong," Lucas admitted, breathing heavily. "But strength isn't everything."

With a burst of speed, Lucas closed the distance between them, delivering a powerful shock to Kael's chest. The force sent Kael stumbling back, but he recovered quickly, laughing.

"You've got potential, kid," Kael said, lowering his axe. "I concede. You've earned my respect."

A New Comrade

The duel ended with Kael extending a hand to Lucas, who hesitated before shaking it.

"You're not bad yourself," Lucas said, grinning.

Kael turned to the rest of the group. "So, what do you say? Am I in?"

Jayson looked at his friends, who nodded reluctantly. "You're in," he said finally. "But don't make us regret it."

Kael's grin widened. "You won't. I promise."

As the sun set over Emberfall, the group prepared to leave, their numbers now bolstered by their newest ally. But as they set their sights on the next artifact, the words of Elder Magnus lingered in their minds—a warning of the dangers to come and the delicate balance they were beginning to unravel.
