Chapter 6: Chapter 6: The Shadow Stalker
The trail from the plateau led Kael and Lira into a dense forest. The trees here were ancient, their gnarled branches forming a canopy so thick it blocked out the sun. Shadows danced across the forest floor, their shapes shifting unnaturally as if alive.
Kael couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. His hand rested on the hilt of his knife, and his eyes darted toward every sound—the snap of a twig, the rustle of leaves, the distant hoot of an owl.
"Relax," Lira said, though her own bow was in hand. "You're going to wear yourself out jumping at shadows."
Kael frowned. "What if the shadows are jumping at us?"
She smirked but didn't respond.
As the day wore on, the forest grew darker, the air colder. The compass in Kael's hand felt heavier, its needle spinning erratically for the first time since they had begun their journey.
"Something's wrong," he said, stopping in his tracks.
Lira turned to him, her expression serious now. "What do you mean?"
"The compass... it's never done this before."
Lira stepped closer, glancing at the spinning needle. "Maybe it's broken."
"It's not broken," Kael said firmly. "It's... confused."
Before Lira could reply, a low, guttural growl echoed through the forest. They both froze, their eyes scanning the shadows.
"Did you hear that?" Kael whispered.
"Unfortunately," Lira replied, notching an arrow.
The growl came again, closer this time, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps. The shadows around them seemed to coalesce, taking shape.
A creature emerged from the darkness, its body a mass of swirling black mist with glowing red eyes. It moved unnaturally, as if it were both solid and liquid at once.
"What is that?" Kael asked, his voice trembling.
"A shadow stalker," Lira said, her tone grim. "I've heard stories, but I didn't think they were real."
The shadow stalker lunged, its claws raking through the air. Lira fired an arrow, but it passed through the creature's body without effect.
"It's not solid!" she shouted, leaping back.
Kael raised his knife, but he knew it would be useless. The compass in his hand began to glow brighter, its light pulsing in rhythm with the creature's movements.
"Kael, do something!" Lira yelled as the stalker advanced.
The compass pulsed again, and Kael felt a surge of energy course through him. Instinctively, he raised it toward the shadow stalker. The glow intensified, and a beam of light shot out, striking the creature.
The stalker howled, its form writhing as the light engulfed it. For a moment, the forest was bathed in brilliance, and then the creature dissolved into nothingness.
Kael staggered, the compass now cool and still in his hand.
"What just happened?" Lira asked, her voice hushed.
"I... I don't know," Kael admitted, his breathing heavy. "The compass—it did something."
Lira lowered her bow, her expression a mix of awe and suspicion. "That's more than just a guide, isn't it?"
Kael nodded, staring at the now-steady needle. "It's more than I realized."
They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of the encounter sinking in. Finally, Lira broke the tension.
"Well, let's hope it has more tricks like that. Something tells me we'll need them."
Kael managed a weak smile, but his thoughts were elsewhere. The shadow stalker had been unlike anything he'd ever seen, and its presence raised unsettling questions. What were these shadows, and why were they following him?
As they pressed deeper into the forest, Kael couldn't help but feel that the compass wasn't just leading him toward something—it was also leading something to him.
