Chapter 6: Do you know where you are going?
'Set up rooms for our guests. I want Avalyn on my floor. The others will be on your floor", Alexander mind-linked Devon. 'Yes Alpha', Devon responded, bowing silently, and leaving the room once again to go delegate new tasks out.
Avalyn opened the chest, her breath being stolen by the sight of the silver daggers, with gold lining, black tips, and a different gem in each handle. The Latin letters etched into the blades told Avalyn that they were centuries old. "Oh my God", Avalyn whispered, as she carefully reached into the box and pulled one of the knives out.
"Careful", Alexander said, his heart racing, worried she may knick herself. "So, you have had five attacks?", Avalyn asked, basing her information on the fact that there were only five knives.
"Correct", Alexander nodded. "We need to get to the bottom of all of this soon then. Because, there are seven total knives, as you already know. However, whoever had access to these five, most likely also have access to the other two", Avalyn explained solemnly.
Alexander sighed, worried for his people. "What's the chances that Caden will come in willingly?", Alexander said. "That all depends on the situation. If his life is in danger, high. If he is doing this for personal gain, slim. We have to try and obtain some information that may help us determine the best option", Avalyn answered.
"Kailey, look up a Caden Wilson for me. Dig up everything you can", Avalyn said out loud, knowing Kailey was still on speaker. "On it. I will get back to you when I have something. Stay safe, loves", Kailey said, before the line went dead.
"The director agreed to allow you to handle it. He just asked that he is told when the vampire is off the streets", Hitch said, as he walked back into the conference room. "Perfect", Alexander said. "I don't mean to sound like a whinny baby. But it is past lunch time, and no one has eaten breakfast either", Corey announced, never afraid to tell people when he is hungry.
Alexander mind-linked his kitchen staff and ordered something for the BAU team to be whipped up. 'The rooms are ready, Alpha', Devon mind-linked Alexander. "Well, your rooms are ready. If everyone wants to take a short break. You can go shower, change and meet back here in thirty to forty-five minutes. Your lunch will be in here waiting for you", he announced to the room.
"That is very thoughtful. We will take you up on that offer. It has been a long week with very little rest", Hitch said, shaking Alexander's hand. "It's no problem, really. Devon will show you to your rooms", he said, gesturing to Devon as he walked back in the room.
"Expect you", Alexander whispered into Avalyn's ear. "Why?", she asked, looking at him skeptically. "You are going to be on my floor", Alexander answered. "Why won't I be on the same floor as my team?", she asked gently. Alexander didn't want to come right out and tell her because she was his mate and he needed to keep her close.
He wanted Avalyn to come to the realization that they were mates on her own. How that would happen without her wolf, he was unsure. "Let's just say, I need to keep you close", he answered, staring into her bright hazel eyes.
Avalyn was confused, but felt comfort in his admission. She nodded softly, "Then show me the way", she whispered. She grabbed her go bag from the edge of the table and waited for Alexander to take the lead. Alexander smiled softly as he started towards the stairs.
"So, do you have any family?", Alexander asked, as they climbed the stairs. "I have a younger brother", she answered. "How about you? How's your father?", she countered, trying to change the subject off of her brother.
"He's good. Him and Kara are vacationing in the Maldives right now", he smiled. "Oh, that does sound nice. I am glad to hear that", Avalyn grinned, as she nodded. "Your father was always good to me. He seemed like a fair ruler too", Avalyn said.
"Indeed. He was loved by his people for sure. It has been difficult to live up to his name. I am beginning to agree with those who do not think I am capable of the task", Alexander admitted. "Who does not think you are a good King?", Avalyn inquired.
Alexander laughed in discomfort. "Do you have time for a list that long?", he said, shooting Avalyn a half smile. "I do, actually. I am willing to bet that one of those people on your list, is who is guiding Alpha Caden", she answered.
Alexander's face contorted as he contemplated Avalyn's theory. "I never thought of that", he uttered, running his fingers through his thick black hair. "I knew it felt like sabotage", he added. "I felt that, too", Avalyn agreed. "At first, I thought that maybe I was being dramatic. I felt personally attacked, because the treaty is being attacked", Avalyn rambled off.
"But that makes more sense. Someone not being happy about the shift in power. They attacked the treaty to make it seem like you couldn't hold your own", she theorized. Alexander's breathing thickened as his anger set in. Why would someone do that to him? He has been running things just like his father, the only difference is what he has done for the communities. Even then, he wouldn't have been able to do that without the plans that his father and Avalyn drew up together.
"Who openly hates you that much?", Avalyn questioned him. Alexander slowed down as they approached the top floor. "You would have to let me ponder on that one. I have been around for a century, there's quite a list to sort through", he chortled, as he opened a solid oak door.
"Fair enough", Avalyn chuckled. "This will be your room. I am right there", Alexander said, as he pointed to the next door over. "Thank you so much. You have no idea how much we appreciate this", Avalyn groveled, as she entered the room.
"Each room has hot water on demand, so you don't have to worry about running out. You have clean towels in the bathroom so you can shower. If there is anything else, feel free to let me know", Alexander smiled, as he scanned Avalyn's soft features.
He wanted so badly to reach out and touch her. To feel her skin against his. "Thank you again", Avalyn whispered. She could feel the energy in the room grow thicker the longer Alexander stared at her.
She could feel the warmth of his eyes on her skin, warming her like the sun. "Avalyn", he whispered, his voice grated. "Yeah?", she uttered, her breath stolen from her by his whisper. "Say my name, please", he muttered.
Avalyn's heart skipped a beat, as her lips parted. "I-", she stuttered. "Please", he asked. "Alexander", she whispered. Alexander inhaled deeply. "Come down when you are ready to eat", he said, as he walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
Avalyn stood their motionless, like a deer in headlights, wondering what had just happened. The whole interaction felt so intimate, yet, they never touched. She wonders why everything feels so intense with him, like every feeling is magnified.
Alexander stopped at the end of the hall. He placed his hand on the wall to brace himself. His heart rate was irregular, his need to feed was doubling since his mate arrived. He zoned his hearing in on Avalyn's heartbeat.
He listened for a few minutes, until he heard the shower start. He knew he needed to go ahead and leave, or he would find himself in there with her. His self-control was slipping and he needed to go for a quick run to clear his mind.
Avalyn marveled on how cozy the room was with earth tone colors, and house plants. The bathroom was just as captivating with stoned floors, and walls. A large clawfoot soaking tub sat off on one side while a stand-up shower was on the other. House plants and vines were placed strategically around the bathroom, giving it the most inviting vibes.
Avalyn took her time in the shower, enjoying how the hot water felt, hitting her sore muscles. Once she was finished, she chose a clean outfit, grabbed her medical baggy, and headed back down stairs to the conference room.
"Corey", Avalyn psst. Corey looked over at Avalyn, who jerked her head at him to follow her. Alexander watched the interaction with curiosity, while the rest of the team continued to eat without paying them any mind. Corey got up from his seat and followed Avalyn outside.
"Is it safe to do that here?", Corey asked. "We are in Colorado, dude. I sure hope it is. Besides, it feels safe", Avalyn said, looking around. She did feel safe here. Like she could be herself without being judged. Avalyn remembered there being a pond just a few yards behind the pack house.
"This way", she said, waving at Corey to follow her through the woods. "I am a little nervous about this, Ava", he admitted. "What? You scared I am going to bite you?", she laughed loudly. "Not you", he whispered nervously. "Relax, Corey. The King promised your safety", Avalyn said, as she continued to walk.
"Do you know where you are going?", Corey fussed. "Corey, why are you so bitchy today?", Avalyn asked. "I'm tired", he whined. "It is high noon. Look up at the sun and soak up the energy then. Or you are going to pass out after this", she said, laughing.
Alexander followed behind Avalyn and Corey, unbeknownst to them. His jealousy got the best of him. He wanted to know where this human was headed with his unmarked mate. The sound of her laughter helped though, since he understood the context of her laughter.
"Here we are", Avalyn said, as they approached a large pond. Avalyn sat on the grass next to the water and pulled a blunt from her medicine baggy. She lit it and took a few puffs before passing it to Corey.
