Chapter 1491: A Bond Unbound
Inside the moving royal carriage.
Great Elder Rosa was now returning back to her home after the unexpected talk with Rex.
She looked out of the window, thoughts swirling inside her head.
'Participating in the Nameless Dragon Arena tournament and also aiming to kill special Voidal Monsters to utilize his Imbalanced Spiritual Vein and become stronger,' She thought inside, repeating what Rex wanted multiple times inside her mind. 'Whatever his business for coming here, he needed to have both status and power…'
Despite somewhat believing Rex, she still needed to crack what he really wanted.
Only then could she feel more relaxed about the situation.
But those two desires were still pointing in multiple directions, she couldn't determine what he wanted.
A lot of things needed status and power, so it was hard to pinpoint his goal by coming to this realm.
"And also, Priestess Viora…" Recalling how Viora was extremely respectful, submissive even, Great Elder Rosa couldn't help but frown. Rex's desires can't point her in one good direction to suspect, but Priestess Viora's reaction might be able to, 'Forgive me but I must look into you,'
Just like that, Great Elder Rosa firmed her mind as the carriage zoomed past the fortress' gate.
Meanwhile, inside the castle.
Even though there were mishaps along the conversation, Rex was able to convince Great Elder Rosa to help him. He was now ahead of schedule. Heeding Istvan's words, he would near the Eternal Spirit rank first before he participated in the Nameless Dragon Arena tournament.
He also asked Rosa and Viora earlier, and both of them agreed.
Only someone at or near the Eternal Spirit rank would be able to complete the tournament.
Currently, Rex was sitting in the guest chamber while facing the flickering blue astral fire ahead.
Amanir, Linthia, and Kraken already excused themselves to their temporary rooms.
It was unclear whether they were truly occupied with their own tasks or if they had sensed Rex's desire to be left alone for the night. Their excuses were strikingly similar, and they all withdrew at the same time as if an unspoken agreement guided them.
However, Viora stayed behind.
She was in the chamber with him, guilty as well as apologetic—for what Rosa did to him.
Despite not taking it into heart and also it not being her fault, she insisted on apologizing.
Rex couldn't decline her because of how sincere she was so he didn't chase her out.
Now, she already fell asleep.
He was now alone with his mind—the room was silent with only the sound of flickering fire.
He stared into the void with absent, hollow eyes.
One might think that he was contemplating something deeply—but in truth, his mind was blank, he was not thinking about anything right now. Not that he didn't want to think or even make his mind up on whether he should save his Nightfall Stars or ascend another of his Soul Artifacts to the Immortal Spirit rank, but because the pain inside him was overwhelming.
For the first time in such a long time, he needed to focus on the pain to hold it in.
An hour passed with Rex doing nothing but stare into the fire.
It was only then did he moved.
"Hmkhh…" Rex groaned slightly as he fixed his sitting position.
But in the next second, he covered his mouth and coughed lightly.
Pulling his hand away, he saw blood smearing his hand—a sign that his body was failing.
"Any pain should stimulate my Werewolf bloodline, activating my regenerative ability but this pain…" Rex gazed into the blood on his hand, cursing the System lightly in his mind. "It bypassed my body's regenerative ability. It deteriorated my body gradually. System, is there no other way to lessen this pain? I can't hold it for long,"
<Notice: The user still can distribute the pain to another inner pack member>
"Sigh…" Rex shook his head and reclined his head on the sofa. "Anything but doing that,"
Just the fact that the pain was even too much for Rex shows that it was abnormal, he didn't want the others to feel this pain. His only option was to quickly finish what he needed to do here—and evolve his bloodline and become an Origin.
Only then would this pain wane.
Swish…
Rex's eyes darted to his chest when he heard a light, sizzling sound.
He could feel a spreading warmth appearing out of nowhere inside of him.
It was akin to bathing in hot water, his senses were being massaged and soothed.
But what's more surprising was how this warmth was able to alleviate the pain inside of him gradually.
A few seconds ago, the pain was bad enough that he couldn't even focus on anything other than holding back the pain from surfacing. Now, this warmth was able to fight back the pain and lessened it greatly, helping Rex breathe for a moment.
Holding the pain for so long, even before he's in the Spirit Realm was taking a toll on him.
He was trying to act strong but having a high level of pain tolerance wasn't enough for this pain.
Just then, his eyes flickered when he saw a faint violet hue seeping out from his chest.
Almost instantly, he recognized this energy, "Evelyn…"
<Notice: The Luna has sensed the user's peril and has used her power to temporarily negate the absolute pain from the Gradual Penalty. For the next hour, the user would be freed from the pain. Once the time limit has been reached, the pain will gradually return>
<Alpha and Luna Harmony achievement has been unlocked!>
<Symphony of Two Souls has been rewarded>
<Congratulations, the Luna Grace Effect has been upgraded to Luna Grace Effect II!>
<All enhancements from the Luna Grace Effect were strengthened exponentially>
<Now, the Alpha and the Pack Members would obtain ten times the amount of fixed stats bonus!>
…
<Symphony of Two Souls>
Rank: Legendary (Tenth-rank)
Mastery: Low
Description: Siphoning power from the bond between the Alpha and the Luna, the Alpha or the Luna could summon the presence of the others despite being far away. All enhancements from being near one another will be activated. Also, the Alpha would have his mental strength doubled while the Luna would have her physical strength doubled.
…
Realizing that it was really Evelyn, Rex couldn't hide his smile.
"Even when we're so far apart you're still worrying about me," He shook his head with a heavy sigh—Evelyn must be doing her best to reconnect their bond since Rex has severed it for the time being, so that she and the others would not feel what he feels. "What am I going to do with you…"
Now, reading through the new skill he got.
Oh…? Am I reading this correctly, System? Evelyn could use this skill too?
<Yes, the skill is connected to the user and the Luna. It can also be used by the Luna>
That's the first.
Once he read the description, Rex wasted no time to activate the skill.
"Symphony of Two Souls…"
Swoosh!
Almost instantly, a torrent of soothing energy that only he could feel blew against his skin.
Rex couldn't see anything, there was no energy that was formed through activating this skill, however, he could feel the change clearly with his senses. His mind felt stronger, clearer, more robust, and then, his eyes widened when he felt a touch that sent electricity through his body.
He felt two arms suddenly wrap around him from behind, sliding over his shoulders in an embrace.
It was the kind of warmth that could seep into his bones, like the first rays of dawn melting away the lingering chill of the long, restless night. Like a quiet harbor in a raging storm, the embrace wrapped around him, letting the chaos outside fade into distant echoes.
Under the influence, his mind which was worn down from enduring the pain was refreshed.
Not even five minutes in, Rex was already ready to get back to reality again.
I can really use this. A great addition to my arsenal, thank you,k Evelyn.
Even though his thoughts shouldn't be able to reach the other side, Rex believed that it reached.
In the next hour, Rex basked in the sensation until the warmth faded.
Upon managing to gather himself enough—to focus on other things than the pain, Rex sat upright and summoned a White Nightfall Star from his inventory. A glowing star symbol appeared on his chest and without thinking much, Rex began to guide the life energy it contained throughout his body.
He didn't guide it to his Soul Artifact mark but to the holes across his Spiritual Vein instead.
As someone who has an Imbalanced-type Spiritual Vein, he needs to do this every day.
Since he was disturbed earlier by the Onyx Lotus village, he hadn't gad the time to absorb today's quota.
Only when all holes were patched would Rex's power remain stable and intact.
Of course, he needs to do it all over again tomorrow.
Unknown to him, Viora was watching him from the side.
Her head was still lying on the table but her gaze was now fixed on Rex who was channeling life energy, evident from the greenish hues that his body emanated. The scene from earlier was replayed in Viora's clear mind.
How Rex handled the situation, how he never lost composure, and how he didn't flinch at the pain.
'So he's from the Mortal Realm and is an Emperor down there…' Viora thought inside, a flicker of awe and praise crept into her eyes. 'Unlike here in this realm where a handful of candidates could appear at the same era, the Mortal Realm could barely produce—a candidate. Simply because the environment here was more suitable for one to become stronger,'
'For him to be a candidate… he must be a legendary figure that'd be remembered for eons,' She mused.
Viora has nothing but respect for Rex.
A Scion has the chance to reach invincibility but their lives were awful.
In order to have that chance, they would need to pay with blood and suffering.
So for Rex to endure the relentless darkness that had befallen his life with tragedy upon tragedy without breaking, without surrendering, was more than enough to warrant the highest respect. Most would have crumbled and ended their own lives if they had walked on Rex's path.
Only a few could survive and even fewer could survive and retain their sanity.
Only a few could walk his path and retain
'Hah… suddenly, I envy Princess Davina. I mean, I don't think he has any feelings for the princess, he probably only wants the status but still,' Viora thought inwardly. However, the moment she realized it, her face flushed crimson as she buried her face in her arms. 'What am I thinking? I'm a priestess, one of the Priestesses of Purity! I can't desire such a thing. I'm meant to remain untouched until my final breath'
Even so, as her gaze drifted back to Rex, she bit her lower lip.
'But if I weren't a priestess… I know I would've pursued him' She shyly thought.
Just as she thought that, however, her eyes widened.
She touched her nose and frowned as her fingers came away stained with blood.
"Am I sick?" Viora whispered aloud, clear confusion marring her face—as she wasn't supposed to get sick. Not to mention, she felt uneasy for some reason as if she was being watched. Then, she tilted her head up when more blood came out. "Oh my God, what's wrong with me?"
Realizing that it wasn't stopping, Viora stood up and ran towards the door to leave.
Rex was too focused on channeling his life energy to care.
But outside, Viora stumbled across Linthia who seemed to be heading to check on Rex.
Seeing Viora walking fast while covering her nose, she tilted her head in confusion.
She wanted to say something but Viora already walked past her hurriedly.
"Is that blood…?" Linthia looked at Viora's back as she disappeared around the corner of the hall, and then, her mind clicked with something. "Her nose is bleeding, just like me a couple of days ago. Hmm, isn't this…?"
