The Mistress Is Reborn As The Fiancée

Chapter 14: Begging For Crumbs Of His Affection

The cool evening air, usually a welcome balm after a long day in the studio, ruffled Noelle's hair and blew against her heated skin. As she emerged from the building, her shoulders slumped with exhaustion and her mind already focused on the quiet solitude of her suite. She just wanted to go home and get off her tired feet.

But as she approached her car, her steps slowed before she stopped dead in her tracks. Evan leaned casually against the driver's side door, his arms crossed, a faint smile playing on his lips. The sight of him, so nonchalant, so seemingly oblivious to the turmoil he had caused, ignited a spark of anger within her.

"Get off my car," she snarled, her voice sharp and cold.

Evan's smile faltered, a flicker of surprise crossing his features. He straightened up, his eyes widening slightly. "Noelle?" he asked, his voice laced with confusion. "What is wrong?"

"You are what is wrong, just get off my car," she repeated, her voice laced with icy disdain. "I don't want to talk to you."

Evan's confusion deepened. He had expected her to be upset, perhaps even angry, but the sheer hostility in her voice caught him off guard.

"Noelle, what is going on?" he asked, his voice laced with concern. "Why are you so angry?"

"Why do you think?" she retorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I am sure you're well aware of what you've done."

Evan's brow furrowed. He reached out and gently took her hand, his touch sending a shiver of irritation across her skin. "Noelle baby, please," he said, his voice soft and pleading. "We need to talk. I can explain everything."

Noelle jerked her hand away, her eyes flashing with anger. "Explain what?" she spat. "How you have been lying to me? How you have been cheating on me with my cousin?"

Evan's eyes widened in feigned hurt. "Cheating?" he echoed, his voice laced with incredulity. "Noelle, I would never…"

"Don't even bother," Noelle interrupted, her voice laced with impatience. "I don't care anymore."

Evan's heart sank. He count not see any hurt in her eyes, from the pain that he had caused. He knew then that he was doomed. There was instead, an irritation and impatience. That was not a good sign. If she was hurt then their relationship was salvageable but if she was irritated with him then things were really bad.

"Noelle, please," he pleaded, his voice trembling slightly. "Just listen to me. Let me explain."

"I don't have time for your explanations," Noelle said, her voice sharp and dismissive. "I have somewhere important to be and you are holding me up."

She reached for the car door handle, her movements swift and decisive. Evan stepped closer, his eyes filled with desperation.

"Noelle, please," he begged, his voice barely audible. "Don't do this. Don't walk away from me."

Noelle paused, her hand hovering over the door handle. She looked at Evan, her eyes filled with a mixture of disgust and finality. His pleading meant nothing to her. Everytime she saw him, she was reminded of how he discarded her when she no longer suited his needs.

"Too little, too late, Evan," she said, her voice laced with finality. "It's over."

She opened the car door, her movements sharp and abrupt. She slid into the driver's seat, slamming the door shut. Evan stood beside the car, his eyes filled with a mixture of disbelief and despair.

Noelle started the engine, the roar of the motor filling the air. She glanced at Evan through the windshield, her eyes filled with a cold, unwavering resolve.

"And for the record," she said, her voice barely audible through the closed window, "I've already found someone else, so you and Ma-Ri have my blessings."

Evan's eyes widened in shock. He could not believe what he was hearing. He couldn't believe that Noelle had moved on, that she had found someone else. No, she was just saying that to rile him up.

Noelle put the car into gear, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. She pressed down on the accelerator, the car lurching forward. She swerved slightly, the car narrowly missing Evan as she sped away.

Evan stood in the parking lot, his eyes fixed on the taillights of Noelle's car as they disappeared into the distance. He was bewildered, heartbroken, and utterly shaken.

He couldn't believe that she had moved on so quickly, that she had found someone else. He couldn't believe that she had almost run him over. He had made mistakes, and now that she was walking away without a backward glance, he wanted her.

He sank down onto the curb, his head in his hands, his body trembling with a mixture of anger and despair. He had lost Noelle, and he had no one to blame but himself.

Then his face hardened and then he started to laugh at himself for despairing. He remembered that Noelle had been the one who pursued him for years. It did not matter what he did, she had always stuck by him.

She was simple playing hard to get and soon enough, when she was tired of playing games she would be right back to loving him and begging for crumbs of his affection.

He chuckled once more, amused at how she had managed to get him worried.

"I will just have to be more careful with her." He thought, "when I get married to her and secure those shares, I will do whatever I like."
