The Mistress Is Reborn As The Fiancée

Chapter 21: Cause More Harm Than Good

The world swam back into focus, a hazy tableau of sterile white and muted beeping. Noelle's body throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, a symphony of pain that resonated from every bruised and battered muscle. She blinked, her eyelids heavy, her vision blurred. She was alive. Miraculously, she was alive.

Which means the car crash did happen and she did not die. After she had been reborn there was no sign of what she had gone through but laying on the bed, every single part of her body screamed in pain.

She remembered the crash, the sickening lurch, the crushing impact. She remembered the darkness, the feeling of her life slipping away. She remembered the figure that had come when she was sure she was at death's door, the glowing silhouette, her whispered words about angels.

They had indeed been an angel, she wanted to see them and thank them for saving her.

She was in a hospital. The realization settled over her, a cold comfort. She was safe, for now. But the pain, the lingering fear, the gnawing suspicion – they were all too real.

She shifted slightly, her body protesting with a chorus of sharp stabs. She wanted to see who was in the room, who had been watching over her. She turned her head, her gaze falling upon a figure slumped beside her bed, their head resting on the mattress.

A flicker of disappointment washed over her. It was Flynn. Her husband. Not the figure she had seen in the wreckage, not the angel she had imagined.

He stirred, his head lifting, his eyes meeting hers.

"You are awake," he said, his voice a low murmur.

Noelle managed a weak nod, her throat too sore to speak. Flynn's expression was a mixture of relief and concern. He reached for a call button, his movements swift and efficient.

"I will get the doctor," he said, his voice laced with a newfound urgency.

He left the room, his footsteps echoing softly in the sterile hallway. Noelle closed her eyes, her mind swirling with questions. Who had pulled her from the wreckage? Who had brought her to the hospital? How did Flynn know to find her here? Who wanted her dead and now that she had survived the attempt, was she safe?

Dr. Rajesh entered the room, his smile warm and reassuring. "Welcome back, Ms. Noelle," he said, his voice gentle. "You gave us quite a scare."

"I am alive," Noelle managed, her voice hoarse.

"Yes, you are," Dr. Rajesh said, his smile widening. "And you are very lucky. You sustained some serious injuries, but you are going to make a full recovery."

"How did I get here?" Noelle asked, her voice laced with a desperate curiosity. "Who pulled me from the car?"

Flynn and Dr. Rajesh exchanged a brief, almost imperceptible glance. "A good Samaritan," Dr. Rajesh said, his voice casual. "They brought you in and left before we could get their name."

Noelle's brow furrowed. "They didn't leave a name?" she asked, her voice laced with disbelief. "That is strange."

"People do strange things in emergencies," Dr. Rajesh said, his voice reassuring. "The important thing is that they found you in time and you are safe."

He proceeded to examine Noelle, checking her vital signs, assessing her injuries. He seemed satisfied with her progress.

"You are doing very well," he said, his smile warm. "I am going to need you to stay here for a few days, but you will be back on your feet in no time."

He left the room, leaving Noelle and Flynn alone.

Noelle turned to Flynn, her eyes filled with questions.

"How did you know I was here?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

"I called your phone," Flynn said, his voice calm. "A nurse answered and told me that you had been in an accident and I came."

Noelle nodded, her mind still grappling with the mystery of her rescuer. "I need to find out who saved me from the car wreck," she said, her voice laced with determination. "I need to thank them."

"You can do that later," Flynn said, his voice reassuring. "Right now, you need to focus on resting and letting your body heal."

He gently adjusted her pillows, his touch surprisingly tender. "I will be back later," he said, his voice soft. "Just try to sleep."

He left the room, closing the door behind him. Noelle closed her eyes, her mind still racing. She could not shake the feeling that something was being kept from her.

In the hallway, Dr. Rajesh approached Flynn, his expression thoughtful. "Why did you ask me to lie to her?" he asked, his voice low. "About her rescuer."

Flynn sighed, his gaze shifting away from Dr. Rajesh. "Itis complicated," he said, his voice laced with a hint of weariness. "I don't want to worry her right now, I think it is better that she does not know I am the one who rescued her."

"But she is going to find out eventually," Dr. Rajesh said, his voice laced with concern. "She deserves to know the truth."

"I know," Flynn said, his voice barely audible. "But not now. Not yet."

He turned and walked away, his footsteps echoing softly in the hallway. Dr. Rajesh watched him go, his expression filled with a mixture of confusion and concern. He knew that Flynn was hiding something, but he was not sure what and it was not his place to ask. He hoped that it would not cause more harm than good.
