Chapter 169: Rising Tension
The integration of the demon lands into the goblin kingdom's growing territory was no small feat, so there was a lot of work to be done. Teams of goblin engineers, ogre laborers, and orc warriors moved into the region under Lance's direction, making efforts to assess the land's potential.
As for the issue with the corruption, Lance was very positive they could handle it after taking a look. While trying to fix Rusak's original beast tribe territory, they had found that the corruption in the land was intense, and though they eventually found two ways to fight it, it was difficult and a slow process. The reason was because the cause of it was not only due to magic, but other physical and chemical factors.
As for the demon territory, their problem was caused completely due to magical energy residing across the land, which had slipped into everything. Since that was the case, the one with the most potent counter to this corruption was Lance, as his healing magic turned out to be potent enough to even clear up corruption in the contact area. The only problem for the time being, was the fact that he was yet to find a way to utilize his magic in other ways such as using remotely, or spreading it across some distance.
He had been studying his magic alongside Aelyndra and Elder Naerys throughout his stay in the Sacred Dragon Lands, and after they left, Aelyndra had been of much help. Still, there had been no progress. Not to mention, he had tried to learn magic through the use of magic circles, since that would make it easier, but as if it was some sort of curse, it was close to impossible to learn, not because he didn't know the theory, but as though his very mana paths had been scrambled all over, it was almost impossible for him to utilize it.
That being said, the purification of the lands was left to the team responsible for the purification of the beastkin territory. Hopefully, they were to have a much easier time with the demon territory.
…
Time flew by, and with the Monster kingdom's borders expanded, trade routes were established between the demon lands and the rest of the kingdom. Resources flowed into the barren region, while the demons began contributing their own unique crafts and knowledge.
As the demon lands began to recover, it didn't take long at all for word to spread across the continent. After all, a lot of adventurers who would frequent those lands to hunt for demons, the remnants that had not been taken care of during the war, were more than surprised to see the corruption fade with time, a far shorter time in fact, and for new demons to emerge. Not to mention, the monsters from the monster kingdom appeared to be in close relations with the demons.
…
Far to the Northwest, in the heart of the human kingdoms, the kings gathered to discuss the recent matter relating to the monster kingdom.
"The kingdom of monsters grows bolder," one of them said, his voice carrying authority. "Accepting the demons is an insult to all of us. It's clear they no longer intend to remain under our watchful eye."
Another, an elderly man with a thin beard sighed. "Their defiance cannot go unchecked. If we allow this to continue, the only course of forward is trouble. Chaos will spread. Nothing good comes from those demon bastards."
"Then we need to remind them of their place. Send word to the Hero. It's time we used our most powerful asset to reassert control."
A ripple of murmurs spread through the council chamber. The Hero, a legendary figure trained specifically to combat threats to humanity, was rarely summoned. His involvement signified the seriousness of the situation.
Listening to all this, King Darric couldn't help but sigh, feeling the impending problems slowly climbing on top one another and stacking themselves. 'These fools really are something.'
He was the Lord of the territory closest to the Wild Lands, and for long had been in charge of keeping that border safe. Over the course of a few years, he had become the king of the small kingdom which was one of the closest to the wild lands, which were now recognized as part of the monster kingdom.
Back when General Haos had visited concerning Lance and his tribe of goblins, he was very surprised, but recently, he even heard that the same no name human living a barbaric life with monsters, had made a pact with the dragons. If not for anything else, this single piece of information proved that indeed, there was something special about that human, and even more so, that the Godking could realize it many years prior.
Though Lance would not know it, it was because of the Godking's order to not antagonize Lance and his tribe, that Darric, back when he was a lord, had allowed trade with the goblins to foster.
Finally deciding to say something, he stood up. "Ahem…" he cleared his throat, but even then, no one seemed to pay attention or even notice him. "Ehem-Ehem!" Still, nothing.
'These senile geezers…'
"ALL OF YOU LISTEN." He said loudly, finally catching their attention. 'Good.'
Before anyone could ask for a reason why he needed their attention, Darric continued. "You all seem to be forgetting something." He began. "The monster kingdom is ruled by the human known as Lance, he is the King that rules over monsters, and if it is not enough for you that he is a man who has subjugated and united almost all the monster races around the wild lands and even beyond, he is favoured by the dragons, and some even say he has formed an alliance with them. Do you really think what you all are planning is wise? To go against such a power without being directly provoked?
If that is not enough reason, a few years ago, in the event that all of you have forgotten, the Godking ordered for that human and his tribe not to be disturbed or antagonized.
I don't think I need to explain further, do I?" He said, arresting the attention of everyone present as they listened closely.
'Damn, I ended up having to give my opinion… before things escalate, I better make an exit.' He thought to himself. 'Last time he wasn't even that much of a big deal, but General Haos himself made an appearance… there's no way I'm getting myself involved now…'
Just as planned, he did just that, leaving the meeting after a few more words. "If you all plan to go ahead, fine. As for me, I will not be a part of it."
