chapter 45
Han Mi-sun, pretending not to be flustered, reached for her coffee, only to notice her trembling fingers. Instead of lifting the cup, she curled her fingers and raised her hand to the bridge of the road, briefly looking elsewhere.
‘If I just pretend the engagement never happened...’
Being flustered right now wouldn’t help at all. The more flustered she became, the narrower her thoughts grew, and her quick reflexes to handle the situation decreased. Her excitement began to rise, and her face was getting hot.
Up until now, she had been waiting for Tae-seo. She had believed that if only Tae-seo were with In-hyuk, she’d have given wings to a tiger. But now, Kim Mi-kyung was trying to block her son's future. While Han Mi-sun took a few deep breaths to regain her composure, Kim Mi-kyung spoke.
“Actually, I was planning to tell you after I was a bit more certain, but it seems I’ve ended up telling you now.”
If Han Mi-sun had only been talking about trivial things and left, Kim Mi-kyung likely wouldn’t have brought up the engagement. But now, without knowing that Tae-seo had turned Omega, suggesting that In-hyuk and Tae-seo should be together left her with no choice but to mention it.
“What do you mean, ‘forget about it?’ Can you just turn it over like flipping your palm? Huh?”
“Tae-seo has someone he's seeing.”
“Tae-seo?”
Kim Mi-kyung nodded. It was hard for her to say it, but it was necessary to properly inform Han Mi-sun about Tae-seo’s situation. However, with her heart growing heavier, Kim Mi-kyung’s voice began to quiet.
“It wasn’t easy for me to say this to you. But there’s no point in delaying. It’s better to say it quickly.”
Kim Mi-kyung avoided Han Mi-sun’s eyes as if asking for understanding, but her guilt made her unable to make eye contact. As Han Mi-sun shifted her gaze to her coffee, an awkward silence lingered. Breaking the silence was Han Mi-sun, who had a lot she wanted to say.
“You’re telling me to forget the engagement over a fleeting connection? Does that even make sense?”
Han Mi-sun shook her head as if it was nonsense. She turned her body slightly, clearly showing her refusal to accept Kim Mi-kyung’s words.
“Unni, In-hyuk and Tae-seo have been together for ten years. During that time, I’ve watched Tae-seo love our In-hyuk with a broken heart. You know that too.”
“I know. I know...”
Just a while ago, she had thought that Tae-seo was heartbroken because of In-hyuk. She thought Tae-seo was anxious about losing In-hyuk since he hadn’t yet turned Omega, and her heart was torn. But now, she had been seeing Tae-seo smiling at someone else, so Kim Mi-kyung’s feelings were complicated.
“So why is this happening now? Tae-seo loves In-hyuk, and I’ve taken extra care because of that. Have you forgotten?”
The day Kim Mi-kyung had told Han Mi-sun about Tae-seo’s feelings for In-hyuk, Han Mi-sun had mentioned the engagement between the two children. Tae-seo had fallen for In-hyuk first, but In-hyuk would eventually love Tae-seo too, so they had agreed to bring them together at the right time. Back then, Kim Mi-kyung had gladly accepted Han Mi-sun’s suggestion.
“I’m sorry too. But Tae-seo is thinking about marriage with the person he’s seeing. It’s not just a casual relationship.”
Kim Mi-kyung paused before continuing, her words coming out reluctantly.
“Recently, the person Tae-seo is seeing came to our house. Looking at the two of them, it doesn’t seem like a fleeting connection.”
“If you’re talking about connections, In-hyuk’s is much deeper. Tae-seo has loved In-hyuk for much longer, hasn’t he? How long has it been with that person?”
Han Mi-sun caught the subtle way Kim Mi-kyung bit her lip and pressed her further.
“Is Tae-seo really saying he doesn’t like In-hyuk anymore? From what I can see, it looks like Tae-seo’s just tired and is seeing someone else for now, but that won’t last long.”
“That’s...”
“Or have they already set a wedding date?”
“No, it’s not like that.”
When Kang Se-heon came to their house, there was no talk of a wedding. So, Kim Mi-kyung couldn’t properly answer Han Mi-sun’s question, but she was sure it wasn’t just a casual thing. Because Tae-seo was pregnant, and Kang Se-heon had introduced himself as the father of the baby.
Kim Mi-kyung, unable to mention Tae-seo’s pregnancy to Han Mi-sun, awkwardly ended the conversation.
“Anyway, it seems like the engagement won’t happen.”
“How can you say that?”
Kim Mi-kyung’s inability to explain everything resulted in Han Mi-sun’s resentment. Her voice became much sharper than before. Unlike earlier, Han Mi-sun didn’t hide her trembling hands. She grabbed her bag from the side and glared at Kim Mi-kyung.
“I’ve waited for Tae-seo to become Omega, and this is how you treat me? I’m really disappointed in you.”
“Mi-sun, please calm down a little. I’ll explain everything later…”
“I’ll leave now.”
Han Mi-sun stood up. The smile she had when she entered was completely gone. Deciding further conversation was pointless, Han Mi-sun spoke her final words to Kim Mi-kyung and turned to leave.
“Unni, I won’t break our promise. I was hasty when I suggested the engagement before Tae-seo’s transformation. I’ll wait.”
“Mi-sun…”
Before the secretary could step in, Han Mi-sun flung the door open and left.
“Sigh, what should I do now?”
Kim Mi-kyung put her hand to her forehead and sighed deeply. She still hadn’t been able to mention that Tae-seo was now Omega. What would happen if she found out later?
****
“Of all people, I never thought she’d stab me in the back like that.”
Han Mi-sun clicked her tongue and twisted her lips in frustration. She had always treated Kim Mi-kyung with a friendly smile, believing that staying close to her would eventually benefit her. She had given her time and energy, thinking it would come back to her one day, but she never expected it to turn out like this.
It was all because her husband had moved to the supermarket. If she had been doing well, Kim Mi-kyung wouldn’t have casually suggested forgetting about the engagement.
For some reason, things hadn’t been going right lately, and this situation was entirely unexpected for Han Mi-sun.
“She owns a few hotels, huh…”
“Dong-seo?”
Just then, Han Mi-sun, who had been venting about Kim Mi-kyung’s actions, turned around at the sound of a familiar voice.
“…Brother-in-law.”
It was indeed her brother-in-law.
Han Mi-sun let out a strained voice as she faced Seo Eun-hee. Her mood had soured even more by the encounter, and it was unlikely she’d greet her warmly. Whether Seo Eun-hee noticed her mood or not, she came over with a bright smile.
“What brings you here?”
"That's actually what I was going to ask. This is a place where my close older sister is in charge, so what brings you here, Brother-in-law?"
"Ah, I just met Se-heon."
Only then did Han Mi-sun nod, as if she understood why Seo Eun-hee was at this hotel. She knew that Kang Se-heon frequently came here for business meetings. She thought, Ah, his nephew is busy, so maybe that’s why my brother-in-law came here, and she gave a small bow of her head.
"Then please, go ahead, Brother-in-law."
She didn’t feel like talking to anyone, including Seo Eun-hee. Han Mi-sun gave a brief greeting and turned away. She didn’t want to run into anyone else she knew and exchange unnecessary pleasantries. As her thoughts turned to the sunglasses in her bag, Han Mi-sun subtly lifted the bag.
"Are you really busy right now? I need to ask you something. Would you have a moment?"
"Not today, unfortunately. I’m busy. Please contact me later."
If she was going to arrange a proper meeting for Kang Se-heon later, it was better to part on good terms with Seo Eun-hee. Han Mi-sun politely distanced herself, setting up a future opportunity for contact, but Seo Eun-hee murmured, as though disappointed.
"Really? I wanted to ask about that kid, Tae-seo, but it looks like I’ll have to wait. See you next time."
"Who, Tae-seo? Yoon Tae-seo?"
"Yes, that Yoon Tae-seo."
"Of course, I know him well."
Han Mi-sun answered indifferently as she pulled out her sunglasses, but suddenly, she turned back to look at Seo Eun-hee.
"But how do you know Tae-seo, Brother-in-law?"
"Is that kid an Omega?"
"He's still a Beta. So, we’re waiting for him to transition into an Omega… Hmm?"
"Then, is it someone else? No, it can’t be. Yoon Tae-seo isn’t exactly a common name."
The Tae-seo Seo Eun-hee had met was the same age as In-hyuk, went to the same university, and seemed to know In-hyuk. Han Mi-sun wondered if her brother-in-law knew Tae-seo, so she had to ask. As Han Mi-sun picked up the words that Seo Eun-hee had carelessly dropped, her expression became more serious.
"Wait a minute. Why do you ask about Tae-seo?"
Han Mi-sun grabbed Seo Eun-hee, still holding the sunglasses in her hand. Now, it wasn’t Seo Eun-hee who was leaving her feeling unsettled—it was Han Mi-sun herself. She was curious as to why it was Seo Eun-hee, and not someone else, who was bringing up Tae-seo.
"Se-heon said there’s someone he wants to introduce, so I came here. The name sounded familiar, and as I thought about it, I remembered that you mentioned it a few times, so I decided to ask."
"Se-heon wants to introduce Tae-seo?"
"Yes. Since they’re the same age as In-hyuk, I thought it might be him, and it seems I was right."
As Seo Eun-hee continued speaking, Han Mi-sun’s mind grew more tangled. The fact that Kang Se-heon wanted to introduce Tae-seo seemed strange to her. But there was something even more important than that.
"Brother-in-law, just now, you asked if Tae-seo is an Omega, right?"
"Yes."
Han Mi-sun ran her fingers through her hair, feeling conflicted. She was certain Tae-seo was a Beta. She had just met with Kim Mi-kyung and hadn’t heard anything different. But why...?
Seeing Han Mi-sun’s troubled expression, Seo Eun-hee caught on to her unease and began piecing together the situation.
"He told me he’s an Omega. It seems like he recently manifested."
Han Mi-sun froze in place, then quickly turned back to Seo Eun-hee.
"...Tae-seo has manifested?"
