The Otherworldly Mercenary

Chapter 44: Ch 43 - A Night of Passion

The warm glow of late evening bathed the city as Seph made his way through the local market. His steps were unhurried, his sharp gaze taking in the vibrant displays of fruits, vegetables, and other goods.

The familiar scents of spices, fresh bread, and roasted coffee beans wafted through the air, mingling with the hum of quiet conversations.

He paused at a stall to pick up a basket of ripe tomatoes, his fingers deftly testing their firmness. From there, he moved on to select an assortment of fresh greens, a loaf of crusty artisan bread, and a bottle of vintage Asgardian wine—something special for tonight.

By the time Seph left the market, the sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving the city cloaked in the soft hues of twilight. With his bag of groceries in hand, he made his way back to his apartment building.

The familiar structure loomed ahead, its façade modern but understated. Seph's steps were purposeful as he climbed the stairs to the top floor. Reaching Hela's door, he knocked twice, the sound echoing softly in the quiet hallway.

"Come in," Her voice called, slightly muffled but unmistakably warm.

Seph opened the door and stepped inside, pausing for a moment as the atmosphere enveloped him.

The room was bathed in a soft, golden light, the glow of candles scattered across various surfaces casting dancing shadows on the walls. The scent of jasmine lingered in the air, subtle but intoxicating. The space was meticulously arranged—minimalist yet inviting, with touches of elegance in the silk drapes and the fine china set on the table.

Hela stood near the window, her back to him, gazing out at the city lights. She wore a sleek, emerald-green dress that accentuated her figure, the fabric shimmering softly in the candlelight. Her raven-black hair was loosely curled, cascading over her shoulders.

Seph closed the door behind him, setting the bag of groceries on the counter.

"You've outdone yourself," He said, his tone light but appreciative.

Hela turned, her eyes meeting his. For a moment, her usual confident demeanor wavered, and a hint of shyness crept into her expression.

"It's nothing," She said, her voice softer than usual. "Just thought I'd... try something different."

Seph smirked, picking up the bag. "Well, you've got the atmosphere down. Now, let's see if your culinary skills match."

Hela rolled her eyes, but her cheeks tinted a faint pink. "I didn't cook everything. I thought we could make it together."

"Teamwork, huh?" Seph teased, unpacking the groceries. "I'll try not to overshadow you too much in the kitchen."

"Confident, aren't we?" Hela shot back, a small smile playing on her lips as she moved to join him.

The next hour passed in a comfortable rhythm. They worked side by side, Seph chopping vegetables while Hela stirred a pot on the stove. The scent of simmering sauce and freshly baked bread filled the air, blending seamlessly with the warm, inviting atmosphere of the room.

Seph couldn't resist sneaking a few glances at Hela as she worked. There was a certain grace to her movements, a fluidity that hinted at both her divine nature and her meticulous personality. Yet, there was also something endearingly human about the way she focused on the task at hand, her brow furrowed slightly in concentration.

"You're doing great," Seph said, his tone deliberately playful as he passed her the chopped tomatoes.

"Flattery will get you nowhere," Hela replied, though her lips twitched with amusement.

"Oh, I'm not flattering," Seph countered. "Just stating facts."

Hela let out a soft laugh, shaking her head as she added the tomatoes to the pot. "You're impossible."

"And you love it," Seph quipped, earning another laugh from her.

As the meal came together, the teasing gave way to a comfortable silence, broken only by the soft clatter of utensils and the occasional shared glance. When everything was ready, they set the table together, the candlelight casting a warm glow over the carefully arranged dishes.

They sat across from each other, and the meal layout between them.

Seph poured them each a glass of wine, lifting his in a silent toast.

"To a perfect evening," He said, his voice low and sincere.

Hela smiled, clinking her glass gently against his.

"To us," She added, her tone equally heartfelt.

The first few bites were met with murmurs of approval, the flavors rich and perfectly balanced. Seph leaned back slightly, his gaze soft as he watched Hela.

"You know," He began, swirling the wine in his glass, "This might be one of the best meals I've had in a long time."

Hela raised an eyebrow, though her eyes sparkled with amusement. "You're not just saying that because I helped, are you?"

"Not at all," Seph assured her. "Though your presence does make everything better."

Hela's cheeks flushed slightly, and she looked down at her plate, her confidence faltering for a moment.

"You always know what to say," She murmured.

"It's easy when it's the truth," Seph replied, his tone gentle but firm.

They continued eating, their conversation flowing easily between lighthearted banter and more serious topics. As the meal wound down, the atmosphere shifted subtly, the air between them growing charged with unspoken emotions.

Hela set her fork down, her gaze meeting Seph's. For a moment, she seemed to hesitate, as though gathering her thoughts. Then, she took a deep breath.

"Seph," She began, her voice steady but laced with vulnerability. "There's something I need to say."

Seph leaned forward slightly, his expression attentive. "I'm listening."

Hela clasped her hands together on the table, her fingers fidgeting slightly.

"You did things for me that I never expected," she said, her voice soft but earnest. "You've also seen sides of me that I've never shown anyone else. And through it all, you've never judged me or pushed me away."

She paused, her eyes searching his. "I've tried to ignore it, to keep things simple. But the truth is... I care about you. Deeply."

Seph's gaze softened, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Hela..."

"I know you have Virginia," Hela continued quickly, as though afraid to lose her momentum. "And I respect that. But I couldn't keep this to myself any longer."

For a moment, the room was silent, the weight of her confession hanging in the air. Then, Seph reached across the table, his hand covering hers.

"I'm glad you told me," he said, his voice low and sincere. "And for what it's worth, I care about you too. You're important to me, Hela. More than just realize."

Hela's eyes softened, a mixture of relief and affection washing over her features. "You mean that?"

"Every word," Seph replied.

The tension between them shifted, becoming something warmer, more intimate. Seph rose from his chair, moving around the table to stand beside Hela. He offered her his hand, and she took it, allowing him to pull her to her feet.

They stood close, their faces mere inches apart. Seph reached up, gently brushing a strand of hair from Hela's face.

"You're incredible," He murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.

Hela's breath hitched slightly, her usual composure giving way to vulnerability.

"So are you," She whispered back.

Slowly, Seph leaned in, his lips capturing hers in a kiss that was both tender and passionate. Hela responded immediately, her arms wrapping around his neck as she pressed herself closer. The world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them and the electric connection they shared.

When they finally pulled apart, Hela's eyes were bright, her cheeks flushed.

"Stay," She whispered, her voice filled with quiet longing.

Seph nodded, his hand gently cupping her cheek. "I'm not going anywhere."

Together, they moved to the couch, the intimacy between them deepening as the night unfolded. The candles burned low, their flickering light casting soft shadows over the room.
