Chapter 6: Chapter 6: A Shield
In the underground parking lot, there were plenty of luxury cars, ranging from Mercedes-Benz and BMWs to top-tier RVs. Many of them were clearly personal vehicles, adorned with flashy decorations, indicating that they belonged to the employees of Pengzhan Group. This indirectly revealed the high income of the company's staff. In comparison, Lin Yi's salary of thirty thousand yuan didn't seem particularly impressive.
Under Uncle Fu's guidance, Lin Yi approached a deep blue Bentley Azure 728. It was an O6 model, meticulously maintained, looking almost brand new—whether because it had been recently purchased or due to regular care, it gleamed like a new car.
"Mr. Lin, please get in," Uncle Fu opened the passenger door and gestured for Lin Yi to enter.
"Am I sitting in the front? Then what about Miss Chu…?" Lin Yi hesitated and asked.
"The young miss always sits in the back," Uncle Fu explained: "She has her schoolbag, so it's inconvenient for her to sit up front."
Lin Yi nodded and got into the car. Uncle Fu drove smoothly out of the underground parking lot. As they passed the security post at the exit, several guards immediately stood at attention, watching the car depart with solemn expressions.
Uncle Fu's driving skills were highly polished, though his style was methodical and by-the-book—very different from Lin Yi's approach. Lin Yi's training leaned more toward racing techniques, partly because of a famous saying from his old man: "It's not your fault if you can't fight back, but if you can't even run away, then you deserve your misfortune."
Thus, Lin Yi had learned quite a few escape techniques, though he only used them on his old man. In front of others, it was usually the other party running instead.
"Mr. Lin, do you know how to drive?" Uncle Fu glanced at Lin Yi beside him while waiting for the traffic light to change.
Uncle Fu was an experienced driver who could judge people well. Normally, he could tell whether someone knew how to drive just by observing small details. Since Lin Yi showed no particular reaction, Uncle Fu decided to ask.
"A little," Lin Yi thought to himself that as a newcomer, it was better to remain modest.
"Do you have a driver's license?" Uncle Fu didn't inquire further about the extent of Lin Yi's driving ability; after all, he knew the boss trusted this person.
"Not yet," Lin Yi shook his head. Although he knew how to drive and had even raced abroad, he didn't have a license: "I just turned eighteen and haven't had time to get one."
"In that case, give me your ID card, and I'll help you obtain a driver's license. That way, if Mr. Chu or I have something urgent to attend to, you can drive Miss Chu to and from school," Uncle Fu said.
The car stopped near a school that looked incredibly luxurious but didn't proceed further, likely because the vehicle was too conspicuous and might create a bad impression if seen by other students.
From the materials Lin Yi had reviewed, he already knew that Songshan No. 1 High School, although a private middle school, wasn't the stereotypical elite school. Instead, it was a provincial key high school that admitted students through competitive exams. While some children of wealthy families did gain admission through connections, most students earned their spots based on merit.
Backed by three major groups, Songshan No. 1 High School excelled in both hardware and software resources as well as teaching quality, which explained its consistently perfect college admission rate over the years.
Of course, Lin Yi understood that this "perfect" rate wasn't entirely genuine. Some spoiled rich kids couldn't study but still managed to attend university thanks to their family's influence.
The familiar school bell rang, momentarily distracting Lin Yi. How long had it been since he last heard that sound? However, after a brief moment of nostalgia, Lin Yi quickly regained his composure and calmly observed the school playground.
Soon, students began pouring out of the teaching building. Some wore uniforms, while others dressed casually. Generally, unless there was a major event, the school didn't impose strict dress codes.
"That's the young miss," Uncle Fu suddenly raised his hand, pointing to a girl among a group of male and female students walking nearby.
Following Uncle Fu's finger, Lin Yi spotted a tall and exceptionally beautiful girl. Despite the presence of other attractive girls around her, Lin Yi instantly guessed this must be the young miss.
After all, the old man had mentioned that Chu Mengyao was the school's beauty queen. The title "beauty queen" should refer to the prettiest one unless Lin Yi's sense of aesthetics was flawed.
While another girl beside her was also very pretty, she was shorter, which didn't match the height described in the documents. Nevertheless, she was undoubtedly a strong contender for the title of beauty queen and would grow up to be breathtakingly gorgeous.
Chu Mengyao and the other girl were quickly heading toward the car, but a group of boys resembling playboys were relentlessly chasing after them.
"Miss Mengyao, wait…" One of the boys blocked Chu Mengyao's path, pleading: "Mengyao, I truly love you. Give me a chance!"
Chu Mengyao frowned, glancing at the boy with obvious impatience: "Zhong Pinliang, are you annoying me on purpose? I've already told you—I don't like you. Leave me alone."
"But…" Zhong Pinliang tried to say more but was shoved aside by Chu Mengyao.
Chu Mengyao quickly walked over, opened the car door, and got inside. Surprisingly, the other girl followed her into the car, causing Lin Yi to feel somewhat astonished.
"Zhong Pinliang is such a nuisance. He pesters me every day without rest. Doesn't he ever get tired?" After getting in, Chu Mengyao continued to complain loudly. Suddenly, she looked up and saw Lin Yi sitting in the passenger seat, startling her: "Who are you?"
"Hello, my name is Lin Yi." Lin Yi made a conscious effort to appear more approachable. The young miss seemed to have a bit of a temper.
"Lin Yi? Uncle Fu, what is he doing here?" Chu Mengyao looked at Lin Yi with confusion.
"Miss Chu, this is the companion reader Mr. Chu arranged for you…" Uncle Fu introduced him.
"Companion reader? Who asked for a companion reader? I said I wanted a shield! Look at him—what kind of person does he think he is? Wearing a tank top and ragged pants, looking like a migrant worker. Even migrant workers don't look as clumsy as him. Does he think he's performing in a two-person comedy act?" Chu Mengyao exclaimed angrily upon hearing this, giving Lin Yi a quick once-over.
Uncle Fu broke into a cold sweat, wiping his forehead nervously. He glanced at Lin Yi, relieved when he noticed no unusual reaction. As someone close to Chu Pengzhan, he was aware of the effort it took to bring Lin Yi on board, even involving the family patriarch.
