Chapter 68: 68: The lingering ghost

Much like the 'other world' where gods dwelled in the continent of Irene—the magical Mirror Kingdom in the Shadow Land—the World Tree System governed the realms of the Aesir.

The World Tree, Yggdrasil, supported nine kingdoms divided across three layers. Asgard, the home of the Aesir gods, was one of the upper realms. Vanaheim housed the Vanir gods, deities of fertility and nature, while the middle realm, Midgard, was the human world.

This time, Kevin, Slude, and the little bird Neil were tasked with venturing to Jotunheim, the icy and perilous land of the giants, to rescue Idun, the goddess of youth.

After borrowing Freya's hawk feather, which allowed its wearer to transform into a divine goshawk, Kevin stood with Slude outside the shimmering three-color Rainbow Bridge. Rigg, the guardian of the bridge, greeted them and used his powers to send the trio to the icy expanse of Jotunheim.

Giants ruled Jotunheim, and even gods tread carefully in its treacherous lands. Disguising himself as a goshawk, Kevin had only a week to complete his mission.

As he donned Freya's enchanted feather, Kevin transformed into a sleek hawk with black and white plumage. Slude couldn't resist stepping forward to touch his feathery head, marveling at the transformation.

Neil, circling above, squawked with amusement, her small frame buzzing with excitement.

"No..." Slude's crimson eyes narrowed as she suddenly froze in realization. "Kevin, this feather… Freya didn't just lend it to you. She also enchanted it with an additional charm spell!"

Kevin let out an irritated chirp, flapping his wings to protest Slude's continued head pats. He couldn't speak in this form, but his indignant cries conveyed his feelings well enough.

"Alright, alright." Slude nodded, taking a step back and raising her arms.

With a powerful push of his wings, Kevin soared into the air. The transformation was seamless—instinctual knowledge of flying as a goshawk flowed through him.

The goal was Shaki's castle, located deep in the ancient region of Tholemheim, but Kevin's first priority was to find Skadi, Shaki's daughter. Loki had explained that Skadi often ventured out to hunt, and her unique nature made her easily recognizable.

Freya's spell on the hawk feather was no coincidence. It was intended to amplify Kevin's natural charm, increasing the likelihood that Skadi would take him back to her castle as a pet.

Kevin couldn't help but recall Loki's cryptic words about Skadi being "easy to recognize." Something about the way he said it had felt off, but Kevin brushed the thought aside as he climbed higher into the sky.

The open expanse of Jotunheim was breathtaking, with its jagged ice peaks and frosty plains. Kevin, reveling in the freedom of flight, began to playfully trace patterns in the sky.

For a while, he forgot the urgency of his mission, losing himself in the thrill of soaring above the icy landscape.

The sharp whistle of an arrow startled Kevin out of his reverie. An ice arrow grazed past him, forcing him to twist midair to avoid it.

"Who dares?!"

Kevin's sharp eyes scanned the ground below, but before he could locate the attacker, a flurry of ice arrows was already speeding toward him. He veered and dodged, narrowly avoiding the relentless barrage.

Fury bubbling within him, Kevin decided to retaliate. Magic began gathering in his talons as he prepared a rune attack.

But then his sharp vision locked onto the figure responsible for the ambush, and he froze.

Descending from the sky in spiraling disarray, Kevin's body was quickly encased in a sheath of ice. His transformation left him temporarily defenseless.

Before he could recover, his downward spiral was halted by a sudden gust of icy wind that softened his fall.

A cold mist formed beneath him, and from it emerged Skadi, stepping gracefully across floating ice.

Kevin could only watch as she approached, her long purple hair shimmering in the dim light, her crimson eyes alight with curiosity. A sly smile tugged at her lips as she extended her hands and caught him mid-fall.

"Got you!"

Her voice, warm and filled with amusement, sent a chill down Kevin's spine.

The ice encasing Kevin's body melted away the moment he was in Skadi's arms. Her grip was gentle but firm, and her red eyes studied him intently.

"You're an unusual one, aren't you?" she mused, running her fingers along his feathers.

Kevin chirped weakly in response, though the sound was tinged with unmistakable frustration.

Skadi's smile deepened. "Beautiful and spirited. I like you already."

Her tone was playful, but Kevin couldn't shake the sinking feeling in his chest. He knew this tone all too well.

Years ago, in the distant kingdom of Eileen, Kevin had encountered a certain Maeve—a queen whose obsession had turned him into her reluctant plaything for far too long.

And now, here in Jotunheim, it seemed he had stumbled upon her spiritual successor.

"Damn it," Kevin thought, his hawk eyes narrowing in resignation. "Even after fleeing to another continent, I can't escape this type of woman!"

Skadi, oblivious to Kevin's internal despair, cradled him with surprising care. She began walking along the frosted expanse, murmuring to herself about what to name her new pet.

Meanwhile, high above the scene, Neil perched on a distant tree, observing the entire spectacle. She shook her small head in exasperation.

"Poor Kevin," she muttered under her breath. "Caught again."

Slude, waiting nearby, frowned as she watched Skadi carry Kevin away.

"This wasn't part of the plan," she whispered, her red eyes narrowing.

Still, Slude knew she couldn't intervene yet. This part of the mission hinged on Kevin's ability to infiltrate Shaki's castle on his own.

"Stay strong, Kevin," she murmured.

Kevin, now perched uncomfortably on Skadi's shoulder, could only sigh inwardly as she hummed a cheerful tune.

The lingering ghost of Maeve's shadow loomed over him, but for now, he had no choice but to endure.

"Why me?" Kevin thought, glancing at Skadi's serene expression.

One thing was clear—this journey was about to get far more complicated than he'd anticipated.
