Chapter 255
Chapter 255
In the backseat of a black limousine winding its way up a mountain road, Se-Hoon quietly flipped through the documents in his hands, reviewing them one by one.
...Publicly, it’s said the two have long had a private relationship, but it seems to actually be a marriage alliance done with recent global trends in mind.
Considering that the Seraphim Guild has been struggling internally due to the contract termination with the Flame Sect and the lawsuit with Ryu Eun-Ha, it wouldn't be surprising if they're actively trying to merge with the Myers family.
Furthermore, this is just my speculation, the Myers family deliberately going out of their way to get involved with the Seraphim Guild suggests they may be analyzing the mass-produced sword aura equipment you developed...
“Hmm...”
Se-Hoon furrowed his brow while reading the documents Amir prepared.
The Seraphim Guild... They're becoming more of a nuisance by the day.
Joining forces with the Flame Sect, tightening their grip on Eun-Ha, loitering around the Myers family—Se-Hoon already had plenty of reasons to be irked by them, and now, with the possibility that they might steal his mass-produced sword aura technology, he felt even more irritated.
It’s just speculation... but it’s hard to dismiss the possibility entirely.
Knowing that the Myers weren’t acting without any thoughts, he assumed they had brought the Seraphim Guild, a group focused on the weapon industry, into the fold for a reason.
Of course, it didn’t mean they would overtly steal the mass-produced sword aura technology, but with the Seraphim Guild’s factories and suppliers at their disposal, there would certainly be leaks little by little.
If I look at it that way, the Myers have blatantly cut ties with me... but it’s not that simple.
In the first place, the contract with the Myers family required mutual agreement over the factories and suppliers. And with Eun-Ha and Helena's assistance, they had also patented the key technologies already, rendering theft virtually impossible.
I seriously don’t know what they’re trying to achieve here...
What exactly was the Myers family thinking, bringing the Seraphim Guild into their fold? Unable to figure it out, Se-Hoon turned to another page and began skimming through more information about the Seraphim Guild. But before he could finish, the voice of the skeleton driver interrupted him.
“We’ve arrived at the destination.”
Glancing up from the documents and out the window at the driver’s polite announcement, Se-Hoon tucked the documents inside his void pocket.
“Thank you for your service.”
“It was my honor to escort you.”
Stepping out of the limousine door that opened automatically, Se-Hoon drew on the power of Boundaries.
Whoosh!
The black limousine vanished into the darkness of the Netherworld in an instant, leaving Se-Hoon alone with a peculiar expression on his face.
A limousine made from undead... he really comes up with the strangest things.
He had been looking for something to ride, not wanting to deal with the hassle of finding a car, but had never expected to stumble upon something like that. Shaking his head at Wurgen’s odd taste, he turned and took in the view.
An imposing, grand mansion with a classic design was nestled deep within the forest, hidden behind a large gate. It was a sight that filled Se-Hoon’s eyes with faint nostalgia.
It’s been a while since I’ve been here.
The mansion, which didn’t look much different from the one in his memories, belonged to one of the world’s most renowned swordsmanship houses—the Myers family.
“May I ask what brings you here?”
Looking toward the man in formal attire who approached from a side gate and greeted him with utmost courtesy, Se-Hoon took out an invitation from his void pocket and handed it over.
“Please wait a moment.”
Quickly checking the invitation, the servant communicated with someone over the radio, and moments later, the large gate swung open to the sides, welcoming him in.
“Please, this way.”
Following the servant, Se-Hoon walked through the gates while glancing around at the surroundings.
The front of the mansion was adorned with a neatly maintained garden that, while not particularly flashy, had something to it that drew his eye.
Wondering what it could be, Se-Hoon squinted slightly at it.
There are traces of swordsmanship... and preservation magic?
He found faint traces of swordsmanship on the trimmed trees and shrubs that powerful preservation magic had been applied on top of, likely to maintain them.
I don’t remember seeing this garden...
Curious about the traces, Se-Hoon was pondering what they were for when he heard a voice.
“Ah, here you are.”
Focusing his attention, Se-Hoon found a scruffy man with a long ponytail standing at the mansion’s entrance—Miles Myers, the A-rank hero known as the Mad Sword.
Se-Hoon greeted him with a slight bow.
“Hello.”
“If you had let me know in advance, I would have come to meet you at the terminal. I apologize for making you come all the way here.”
“Not at all. It was my fault for coming unannounced.”
The wedding was still four days away, but Se-Hoon had departed right after receiving the invitation to England. The invitation had confirmed it was fine to arrive early, and if he was going to help Jake, he needed to develop a basic understanding of the family’s internal atmosphere.
You guys might have cleaned things up beforehand if I had, after all.
Even the most minor details could yield something useful.
Done with pleasantries, Se-Hoon asked Miles, “Is Jake inside?”
“He is, but... uh...”
Miles hesitated to answer, making an awkward expression, before letting out a long sigh.
“It's not something to discuss out here. I'll tell you later. For now, I’ll bring you to the head of the family. He’s waiting for you in the reception room.”
“Understood.”
With no objections, Se-Hoon followed Miles into the mansion. The interior, while clean, showed signs of age here and there. Of course, given that the building was over a century old, it was inevitable, but thanks to regular maintenance, there didn’t seem to be any major flaws.
The interior isn’t much different from what I remember either.
Though not overly secure, the layout still included robust defensive measures against external threats. It seemed the family thought that was enough, confident in their ability to handle any enemies who managed to break in on their own—a confidence they proved by successfully repelling numerous invaders before the regression.
It’s like the saying, “If your body is weak, your mind has to work harder.”
To prove that, the Myers mansion’s interior displayed a brimming pride in their swordsmanship.
Trying to take it all in, Se-Hoon’s gaze wandered back to the garden that was visible through the hallway windows.
“Mr. Myers.”
“Just call me Miles or Big Brother.”
“Alright, Miles.”
“You could just call me big bro... anyways, what is it?”
“Who oversees the garden outside? It doesn’t look like an ordinary garden.”
“What? Can you sense it?” Miles asked in surprise, eyeing Se-Hoon curiously.
“It’s nothing too significant, just something that caught my eye.”
Not wanting to get into trouble over something potentially sensitive, Se-Hoon carefully chose his words.
However, Miles just nodded in understanding, impressed.
“Our oldest brother used to tend to that garden. We still maintain it with preservation magic now, even though it costs us a fortune every year.”
“Your eldest brother...?”
“Oh, you haven’t heard about him? He was quite famous in his day, known to most as the Flashing Sword.”
Searching his memory for the name, Se-Hoon finally recalled the person Miles was referring to.
Gilbert Myers, was it?
Gilbert Myers, a man over two meters tall, was an S-rank hero who wielded a massive sword so fast that he earned the nickname Flashing Sword. Se-Hoon knew little else besides that, but it made sense—Gilbert had died long ago, even from the current point in time.
“He was the best among us in both skill and character. If he were alive, he’d probably be the head of the family now.”
“A man with such talent existed, huh?”
“Yeah. He wasn’t as gifted as Aria is now, but he was considered the next great hope of the family. Wow, it feels like just yesterday, but it’s been decades since then...”
Making a bitter expression, Miles muttered something before quickly fixing his expression.
“Anyway, it's something our oldest brother left behind. There's talk of finally clearing it out, but I have no idea how it’ll be decided. The head of the family and the elders will make that call as they see fit.”
From how Miles’s tone turned curt, it seemed he had some attachment to his eldest brother, Gilbert.
Se-Hoon glanced at the garden again.
So, it was already removed before the regression. That’s why I never saw it.
Though Gilbert had been dead for a long time, the mere fact he was mentioned almost in the same breath as Aria indicated just how extraordinary of a hero he must have been. Lost in thought, Se-Hoon silently observed Gilbert’s lingering traces as they walked, and soon Miles stopped before a door.
Knock, knock.
“We're coming in.”
Without waiting for a response, Miles opened the door to the reception room.
Looking into the room, Se-Hoon observed the neat decor before looking at the man waiting. With his short, neatly parted blonde hair that gave him a tidy appearance, the man resembled Jake. But despite their similar faces, he clearly looked like a man in his thirties, with a cold expression that set him apart.
The man, dressed in a black vest and tie over a crisp white dress shirt with matching trousers, was the complete opposite of Miles, who looked disheveled and wrinkled. It was a meticulous appearance that reflected the man’s demeanor.
“You should show some respect in front of our guest, Miles.”
The man seated in the room, reprimanding Miles, was the head of the Myers family—Aaron Myers.
Pouting, Miles muttered, “I don’t think making a guest wait isn’t very polite either...”
“Sigh. Leave us. Lee Se-Hoon, please, come in.” Ending their discussion, Aaron stood to greet Se-Hoon.
Looking between the two, Se-Hoon paused momentarily before nodding, “Pardon my intrusion.”
Clicking his tongue, Miles left the room, closing the door behind him.
Then, Se-Hoon approached the seat opposite Aaron, who gave him a slight nod.
“I am Aaron Myers, the head of the Myers family. I apologize on behalf of my brother for his rude behavior,” Aaron started off, bowing his head respectfully.
Seeing that a man who had children of a similar age to himself was doing such a thing, Se-Hoon quickly waved his hand back and forth in a hurry.
“There's no need for that. Honestly, I prefer the informal tone. Feel free to speak comfortably as well.”
“I cannot be informal with a guest of our family.”
“I’m just Jake’s friend, so I really don’t think...”
“As this is a formal setting, I ask for your understanding that I must maintain proper etiquette.”
“...”
Se-Hoon couldn’t help but feel a bit perplexed.
I remember how this guy treated me like dirt no matter what before I regressed.... What a difference.
Considering the difference between his previous history of recklessness and his current history of accomplishments with the Perfect Ones, the stark change in treatment was expected, but... the shift was so drastic it felt strange.
Enduring the uncomfortable feeling, Se-Hoon nodded in the end.
“If that’s what you prefer, I’ll follow suit.”
“Thank you for understanding. Please, have a seat.”
Sitting down on the sofa where Aaron gestured, Se-Hoon observed him. Everything from his demeanor to his attire and posture was impeccable, a reflection of his standing as the head of a prestigious family. In that regard, Aaron hadn’t changed from before.
But this formal attitude makes it hard to broach any topic...
Struggling to find words, Se-Hoon broke the ice first with some pleasantries.
“Thank you for inviting me to the engagement ceremony.”
“It is us who are grateful that you have come. You gracefully accommodated our sudden requests for prototypes and pushed production forward to summer, even though it must have been troublesome.”
“Well, it’s all for the sake of business, after all.”
It was a subtle hint on Se-Hoon’s part, wondering if Aaron had forgotten the promised reward, but Aaron quickly caught on.
“The reward we promised will be available whenever you need it. Just say the word, and we will grant you access to our family’s vault.”
Thinking about the opportunity he had claimed before the regression as well, Se-Hoon smirked internally as he nodded.
“Thank you for your consideration.”
“And regarding the upcoming engagement...”
Becoming more serious, Aaron looked directly at Se-Hoon.
“I assure you, there will be no leakage of technology to the Seraphim Guild.”
Not expecting Aaron to cut to the heart of the matter so quickly, Se-Hoon was a bit startled. But when he saw Aaron was about to explain further, he quickly focused, listening intently.
“This engagement is purely a measure to cope with the rapidly changing geopolitical climate and to ensure the continuation of our bloodline.”
“Your bloodline?”
It was an unexpected reason. Seeing that Se-Hoon raised an eyebrow, Aaron nodded.
“The original plan was to proceed with the engagement after graduation, but the situation has changed so quickly that we decided as a family to have an heir sooner. That is the purpose of this engagement.”
“...”
“We are indeed planning to acquire some of the Seraphim Guild’s factories and suppliers, but we have no intention of relying on them for production. And if you don’t trust my words, we are willing to change suppliers immediately.”
With a feeling that Aaron’s story wasn’t a lie, Se-Hoon's suspicions began to ease.
So they weren’t scheming something else. It seems they don’t intend to interfere much with the mass-produced sword aura technology.
The main purpose of the engagement was to produce an heir, which made sense, but at that thought, another question arose in Se-Hoon’s mind.
Why the Seraphim Guild?
And as if reading Se-Hoon’s thoughts, Aaron explained. “The marriage partner was chosen through our family’s traditional Selection Ritual. It was determined that the two would produce the most outstanding offspring.”
“I see...”
Recalling that the Myers family had produced countless high-ranking heroes, Se-Hoon realized their secret was rooted in that selection process.
I’m not sure how it works, but given the results, it must be pretty effective.
Pondering over their ritual, Se-Hoon suddenly had another thought.
“But why was Jake chosen for this? Wouldn’t Aria be a better candidate, considering her talent?”
“The eldest son, Lloyd, was excluded due to his lack of talent. As for Aria, though her abilities are exceptional, we couldn’t find a suitable match for her. Thus, Jake was chosen.”
“Ah, so it was a process of elimination.”
With a newfound understanding of the general situation, Se-Hoon made a somewhat ambiguous expression.
Then there’s no real way to interfere here, is there?
The Myers family wasn’t targeting the Seraphim Guild—it was simply about the guild leader’s second daughter and not the deep political alliance Se-Hoon had imagined. In fact, they even seemed willing to cut ties with the Seraphim Guild if he objected.
In short, there were no issues with the mass production of sword aura equipment, meaning Se-Hoon also had no excuse to interfere.
If I tell them to cancel the engagement now, I’ll just seem like a lunatic meddling in their family matters. It’s not like I can threaten them with the project, either. That just doesn’t feel right.
Perhaps the next step should be asking Jake why he wanted to cancel the engagement in the first place? Unsure of how to proceed with the complicated situation, Se-Hoon was lost in thought when Aaron suddenly made a surprising proposal.
“Actually, I would like to propose something to you, Lee Se-Hoon.”
“To me?”
Curious about what Aaron could possibly say, Se-Hoon focused as Aaron’s expression turned more serious.
“Would you consider marrying my daughter?”
