Chapter 140: Controlling Esmeralda (1)
Argider leaned back in her chair, her hands resting on the slight swell of her belly, exhaustion tugging at her. The palace was alive with whispers, each one an unspoken threat to her and the unborn child she carried. She tried to focus on the reports on her desk, but her thoughts wandered to the tension building in the palace. The attempted poisoning, the unruly servants, the shifting loyalties—it was overwhelming.
A soft knock interrupted her reverie.
"Come in," Argider said, her voice carrying the weariness she felt.
Continue your journey with empire
The door opened to reveal Fialova, her silver hair gleaming in the light. She stepped in with her usual grace, but there was a hint of unease in her violet eyes.
"Fialova," Argider said, attempting to rise.
"Stay seated," Fialova ordered gently, crossing the room to her. "You're in no state to play the role of the unyielding emperor right now."
Argider sank back into the chair, grateful for the reprieve. "What brings you here?"
Fialova took a seat beside her, her expression serious. "I came to tell you about an incident with the maids earlier. Agnes handled it well, but it's clear that the palace isn't cleansed yet. There's still tension—and danger."
Argider sighed, running a hand through her hair. "It feels endless. And we still don't know who tried to poison the baby."
Fialova's hand rested lightly on Argider's arm. "We'll figure it out. But you need to take care of yourself first."
Argider frowned, determined to push past the fatigue. "I can't just sit idly by. This is my palace—my responsibility—"
"Enough," Fialova interrupted, her tone firm but warm. "You're carrying the future. Let someone else shoulder the burden for once."
The words struck a chord, and Argider reluctantly leaned back. Fialova's hand lingered on hers, and for a moment, the tension between them softened.
"I missed you," Fialova admitted, her voice quieter now.
Argider glanced at her, startled by the admission. There was an intimacy in the moment, a vulnerability she hadn't expected.
Before she could respond, a sharp knock at the door broke the silence. Both women jolted, pulling away from each other as though caught in something forbidden.
"Enter," Argider called, her voice sharper than intended.
The door creaked open, and Esmeralda stepped in. Her usually regal demeanor was marred by the dark bruises on her face. Argider's eyes widened in shock, her immediate irritation replaced by concern.
Fialova stood, her expression unreadable. "I'll leave you two to talk," she said, excusing herself with a knowing glance at Argider.
Once the door closed, Argider's tone turned icy. "What happened?"
Esmeralda hesitated, her pride clearly warring with her need to speak. But the genuine worry in Argider's eyes seemed to crack her defenses.
"Some disagreements… with my father," she admitted, her voice low.
Argider's expression softened despite herself. She stood and crossed the room, reaching out to gently caress Esmeralda's bruised cheek.
"Disagreements shouldn't leave marks like these," Argider murmured, her thumb brushing lightly over the injury.
Esmeralda's lips tightened, and her eyes glistened with unshed tears. "You wouldn't understand," she said bitterly.
Before Argider could respond, a familiar golden glow appeared in her vision.

Argider clenched her fists, muttering a curse under her breath. She'd come to hate the system's meddling, but this was not the time to argue with an unseen force.
Taking a deep breath, she tilted Esmeralda's chin up gently. "You don't have to explain everything now. Just know that I'm here."
Esmeralda blinked in surprise, unused to such tenderness from Argider. "Why… why are you being kind to me?"
Argider smiled faintly, pressing a soft kiss to Esmeralda's bruised cheek. "Because even you need someone to lean on sometimes."
Esmeralda's face turned crimson, and she averted her eyes. Argider could see the cracks forming in the haughty mask Esmeralda always wore.
"This isn't like you," Esmeralda muttered, unsure of how to process the moment.
"Maybe you bring out a different side of me," Argider replied smoothly, the words rolling off her tongue with surprising ease.
She guided Esmeralda to a nearby chair and sat beside her, taking her hand. "Tell me something, Esmeralda. Why do you let your father treat you like this?"
Esmeralda's lips trembled as she struggled to find the words. "It's not as simple as you think. He's… powerful. He expects so much from me. It's suffocating."
Argider nodded, her empathic powers helping her sense the depth of Esmeralda's frustration and pain. She knew exactly how to phrase her response.
"You're stronger than you realize," Argider said softly. "You're Esmeralda Morrigan, the envy of the court. If anyone can stand up to him, it's you."
The compliment, tailored to stroke Esmeralda's ego, had the desired effect. Esmeralda straightened slightly, a flicker of pride returning to her expression.
"You really think so?" she asked, her voice wavering.
"I know so," Argider said, leaning closer. "You have a fire in you that even he can't extinguish."
Esmeralda's eyes met hers, searching for sincerity. What she found seemed to reassure her.
Argider pressed a kiss to the back of Esmeralda's hand, keeping her gaze locked on the other woman's. "You don't have to face this alone. I'll be here, whether you need support or someone to fight beside you."
The words were sweet but calculated. Argider knew she was walking a fine line, but for the first time, she felt as though she might have the upper hand in her tangled relationship with Esmeralda.
Esmeralda's cheeks flushed again, and she leaned slightly into Argider's touch. "Thank you," she said quietly, her usual sharpness replaced with something softer.
Argider smiled inwardly, realizing that for once, she might be the one in control.
The room was heavy with silence, the air thick with unsaid truths. Argider sat back in her chair, arms crossed, her tired eyes fixed on Esmeralda, who hesitated, as if the words she was about to say could shatter something fragile between them.
Finally, Esmeralda exhaled, her voice trembling. "It was my father. He's the one who tried to kill the baby."
Argider froze, her fingers tightening slightly on the armrest of her chair. "Your father? Gander Morrigan?"
Esmeralda nodded, unable to meet Argider's gaze. "He told me. He doesn't trust you. He doesn't trust anyone but himself and his so-called plans for the empire. He thinks you're…" She hesitated, her lips tightening. "...unfit to rule. And the baby—he sees it as a threat to his control. He didn't even ask me. He just acted, thinking it was for the best."
For a moment, Argider said nothing. The revelation wasn't entirely surprising, given Gander's reputation, but hearing it confirmed still sent a chill down her spine. Finally, she leaned forward, her voice calm and steady. "Thank you for telling me."
Esmeralda's head shot up in surprise, her expression a mixture of guilt and confusion. "You're… thanking me?"
Argider nodded. "You didn't have to tell me. You could've kept it to yourself, protected him. But you chose to speak up."
The tension between them eased slightly, but Argider wasn't done. She turned to the door and called out, "Someone bring me a pack of ice!"
Moments later, a servant arrived with a small bundle wrapped in cloth. Argider took it without a word and turned back to Esmeralda, who looked at her with suspicion.
"What are you doing?" Esmeralda asked as Argider moved closer.
"Applying ice to your face," Argider replied matter-of-factly, sitting beside her and pressing the cold pack gently against her bruised cheek.
Esmeralda flinched slightly at the cold but didn't pull away. "You're being weird," she muttered, narrowing her eyes.
Argider smirked. "Well, being what I am in this state… it softened me." She patted her belly for emphasis, her tone both teasing and resigned.
Esmeralda rolled her eyes but said nothing.
After a moment, Argider spoke again, her tone unusually thoughtful. "You want control, don't you?"
Esmeralda glanced at her, startled. "What?"
"Control," Argider repeated, pressing the ice pack a little more firmly. "You want it because it feels like everyone else in this palace is trying to control you. Your father, the council, even me, at times. But you don't have to be in control all the time."
Esmeralda scoffed, but there was a flicker of vulnerability in her eyes. "And what would you know about that?"
Argider laughed softly, shaking her head. "Look at me. I'm pregnant, surrounded by wives who constantly remind me of my faults, and dealing with a palace full of drama. I gave up on control ages ago."
Esmeralda's lips twitched, fighting a smile. "That's because you're hopeless."
"And yet, here I am, emperor of this fine mess," Argider retorted with mock grandeur, eliciting a reluctant chuckle from Esmeralda.
The room lightened with the exchange, the weight of their earlier conversation momentarily lifted.
Esmeralda sighed, leaning slightly into the ice pack. "You're still insufferable."
"And you're still dramatic," Argider shot back. "We balance each other out."
Their banter continued, sharp yet strangely affectionate, until Esmeralda suddenly shifted, her expression turning unreadable. Before Argider could react, Esmeralda pushed her back against the chair, pinning her down.
"What are you—" Argider began, but her words were cut off as Esmeralda leaned down, her lips brushing against Argider's neck.
"Don't get the wrong idea," Esmeralda murmured, her voice low and teasing. "This doesn't mean I trust you."
Argider's breath hitched, her mind racing as she tried to process what was happening. "Well, uh, you have a funny way of showing it," she managed, her tone caught between sarcasm and genuine fluster.
Esmeralda smirked against her skin, her confidence returning in full force. "Let's just say I'm testing you. Consider it a challenge."
