The Sharpest Blade (My Vampire System Fan-Fic)

Chapter 41: Just Like That

The summer had arrived once again and just like before Vorden and Jade were heading back to the Blade complex for the duration of the Summer. Although this time they had plans to do some traveling. There weren't many of Vorden's friends left still alive but the ones that did remain he wanted to introduce to Jade. He had a very big reason why too.

That's because he was planning to propose to Jade. He was certain. Vorden had gone back and forth about it for several months. First deciding if it was even the right step to take. He wasn't really sure he truly believed in marriage after all. Honestly, he didn't have a whole lot of examples of marriage at all to look at let alone a healthy one.

His father had never been married. In fact there weren't many people who even knew where the women were that birthed all of his children, if there even were women. Vorden didn't know if he, his original body, was actually born or if it has come from a laboratory of some kind. In the end what was the point? What he and Jade had going was working after all. Did he really want to mess it up by trying to change things?

Then after much thought, he finally figured out what he wanted. He wanted to make a commitment. He wanted her to as well. Vorden wanted something real, something lasting. He wanted for her to be a Blade, to be his without a doubt. He was sure, now he had nothing left but to decide when exactly to do it.

He had a ring made special and had been carrying it around for a few weeks now, unsure and waiting for the right moment. All he knew was that it had to be this summer. That was the goal he had set for himself. So he had plenty of time.

The transport ship hissed as it settled into the Blade complex's landing bay. The metal ramp extended with a soft thud, and Vorden stepped out first, his grin wide and easy, Jade following close behind. Her French braid gleamed under the sun, swaying as she walked, her hand slipping comfortably into Vorden's.

"Home sweet home," Vorden muttered, squeezing her hand.

Shiro was already jogging across the landing bay, with Raten and Cassidy in tow, an oversized grin plastered on his face. "Vorden! Jade! You guys made it!"

"Like we'd miss the chance to come home for summer break," Vorden shot back as Shiro practically launched himself into a hug. Vorden caught him easily, laughing before Shiro pulled back and gave Jade a quick, awkward side-hug.

Cassidy wasn't far behind, striding forward with her usual cocky smirk, her red hair tied in a messy bun, whisps of smoke crackling faintly at her fingertips. She clapped Vorden on the shoulder with enough force to make him stagger.

"Still breathing, huh?" Cassidy teased as she gave Vorden a hurried hug and then shifted her attention.

"Barely," Vorden chuckled before Cassidy turned and wrapped Jade in a quick but surprisingly warm hug.

"You survived dating this bonehead for a year, you're more patient than you look," Cassidy grinned. All Vorden could think is that Raten was really rubbing off on her.

"I could say the same thing to you." Vorden smirked as he spoke from behind Jade. Looking around for Raten, hoping he had heard.

Jade laughed. "I'll take that as a compliment." She reciprocated the embrace, actually happy to see her. They had kept in touch throughout the year, and had grown to enjoy each other's friendship. She was very happy to see her friend.

Sil followed at a calmer pace, his steps measured, his presence as commanding as ever. The few loose strands of the lengths of his hair caught the breeze, the sunlight reflecting off the streaks of silver in his light blonde locks. He stopped just in front of Jade, his sharp, knowing gaze softening as he extended his arms out, welcoming her in for a hug.

"Welcome back, Jade," Sil said with a warm and soothing tone.

Jade smiled and hugged him back, unsurprised by the genuine warmth in his eyes. "Thanks, Sil. Good to see you."

"Still keeping Vorden out of trouble?" he asked as he pulled back to meet her gaze, a playful sparkle in his eyes.

"I try." She admitted with a playfully exasperated sigh.

"Good luck with that," Raten shouted as he laughed with a snort from a distance.

Vorden rolled his eyes but smiled as Sil turned towards him and also gave his brother a hug, lasting a bit longer and ending with a few pats on the back from each of them.

throwing an arm over Jade's shoulders as they began walking across the open grounds, heading toward the main compound. The grass swayed gently in the breeze, birds chirping in the distance—everything calm and perfect.

Until it wasn't.

A harsh hum pierced the air.

Without warning, bright white light exploded beneath Vorden and Raten's feet—so blinding it seared their shadows into the ground. Jade's instincts kicked in; her hands flared with light, but it was too late.

The beams swallowed Vorden and Raten whole.

"VORDEN!" Jade shrieked, lunging forward as his hand stretched toward her—but he vanished in a snap of white energy.

The light winked out. The air fell still. Just like that, they were both gone without a trace.

"Vorden?" Jade's voice cracked, her light still glowing around her fists.

Cassidy cursed loudly, flames igniting dangerously from her palms. "What the hell was that?!"

Shiro's fingers were already flying over his wrist device, eyes wide with panic. "That—wasn't a normal teleport. That was something else."

Jade whirled toward Sil. "We have to do something! Where did they go?!"

Sil didn't answer right away. He stood frozen, face shadowed, eyes narrowed at the fading white residue left behind. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and grim.

"I know someone who might know what this was."

"Who?" Jade demanded.

But Sil didn't answer. Instead, his hand tightened into a fist at his side, old memories swirling in his mind.

He didn't say her name aloud. Not yet. Not until he was sure.
