The Walking Dead: A New Beginning From the End of the World

Chapter 27: A Moment of Calm

The next morning, after a whole night of thinking, several people went to meet Jason.

The first was Morales. While Jason was discussing arrangements with Rick, Shane, Guillermo, and others, Morales brought his family to see him.

Morales' arrival was expected. They had originally planned to leave and reunite with their relatives. In the original story, nothing more was known about them until later, when it was revealed that all his family members had died, leaving Morales as the sole survivor.

After losing everything, he joined Negan and was ultimately killed by Daryl...

He was a poor man who would suffer greatly, but who wasn't a poor soul in these times?

"We want to follow you..."

Jason stood beside Rick, looked at Morales, and said, "Remember, everyone only gets two chances. Don't break the rules you'll learn later, and everything will be fine."

"Once we settle at the CDC, we'll have a better idea of how to proceed." Rick hesitated for a moment, walked over to a backpack, and handed Morales a gun. Morales was grateful and left with his family.

Next came a man and a woman whom Jason didn't recognize. They hadn't appeared in the original story, but they were here now. It turned out they had joined Shane when he told them he had a contact within the government, but now they had decided to take their chances and search for their own families.

Jason also gave them a gun and a machete. After saying their goodbyes, the two left, but since they didn't have a car, they took one from the camp and drove away.

After that, a few more people came to see them one by one, but Jason didn't try to persuade them to stay. No one else wanted to leave—everyone knew the chances of surviving out there were very slim.

While Jason was with his group, they received a radio report confirming that everyone had arrived safely, so there was nothing left to worry about.

A few hours later, the last person to approach him was a young woman named Amy.

"Jason, my name is Amy. Can I have a word with you?" Amy walked up to Jason, looking somewhat nervous. The people around her were unfamiliar, so she asked and waited for his response.

"Of course, Amy." Seeing Amy's nervous expression, Jason was slightly puzzled and curious.

Amy took a few steps away from the cars where Jason was standing and then spoke. "Jason, first of all, I have to thank you and your people for saving my sister. Andrea mentioned you. Thank you for helping her."

Jason understood and replied, "There's nothing to thank me for. I was just trying to survive, so you can see it as mutual aid."

"No, you could have abandoned them or used them. I think thanking you is the right thing to do. After all, nothing forces you to save people—even if you have a government job, the law no longer applies, right?" Amy's expression was complicated. She had probably thought a lot about this situation.

After saying that, Amy looked up at Jason and hesitantly asked:

"By the way, haven't we met before? You seem very familiar..."

"I don't remember anything like that. People used to confuse me a lot with a famous actor. Maybe I just have a resemblance?" Jason said, adopting a thoughtful expression as he looked at her.

"Haha, I never thought about that..." Amy smiled slightly. Jason, on the other hand, had no idea what was going on.

Just as he was about to turn around, Jason felt someone grab his arm. He looked at Amy in surprise—had someone really fallen for him at a time like this?

No, he also knew those clever tactics women used out of fear of being abandoned.

Who wouldn't seek out a strong man or woman for protection?

"I remember now. You were with a group from the CDC, collecting something in that house, right?"

"Oh... I remember now. You were that sister duo..." Realizing that she had recognized him, Jason pretended to have just realized it as well, slightly changing his expression.

"Now I remember seeing Andrea at that time. She was driving, and you were in the passenger seat."

"Yes, yes!" Amy clapped her hands, finding it incredible that they had reunited by chance.

"Ahhh!"

Suddenly, a scream came from deep within the forest.

Jason quickly turned his head, frowned, looked at the others, and signaled them to be ready. Without glancing at Amy again, he walked toward the source of the sound. Rick and Shane rushed ahead with their weapons drawn.

"What happened?"

"Lori!"

Several people quickly ran toward the bushes behind the camp. Rick realized it was Lori and Carol and hurried to check on them.

Jason stepped into the bushes and discovered that it was just a walker biting into a deer carcass.

By that time, the rest of the group had also arrived. Tommy and another soldier approached to see what was going on. Most of the people's expressions changed—they all seemed very tense.

Right then, the walker was kneeling on the ground, chewing on the deer's corpse. It seemed unaware of the scream.

Jason sighed, thinking it was something more serious. He pulled out a knife and walked toward the figure. As he got close to the walker, he kicked it. Only then did the walker stop eating and turn its head.

Crack!

Before it could do anything, Jason's dagger plunged fiercely into its eye socket. The walker instantly froze and collapsed to the ground with a dull thud.

Just as Rick was about to speak, he saw Jason suddenly raise his hand to signal silence, then slip into the bushes.

Jason had heard some kind of movement. He had a hunch it was Daryl, but he couldn't rule out any other danger.

Merle's brother was one of the most beloved characters among fans of this world. His development throughout the story had been great, and despite not originally being planned for the series, he had become a truly special man.

But at this moment, that Daryl didn't exist yet. He had much to learn and many things to change. That's why Jason wanted to leave a strong first impression.

Daryl was in a foul mood at that moment. A deer he had tracked had escaped. He was sure he had shot it, but after searching for a long time, he couldn't find it.

After cutting through some bushes blocking the deer's trail, Daryl stepped through, and the camp was right ahead.

Thinking about this, Daryl snapped another branch out of his way. But suddenly, a dark figure leaped out of the bushes and aimed a gun at him.

Instinctively, he raised the crossbow in his hands and saw that the other person was silently staring at him. He frowned and considered his next move.

"Are you with the camp up ahead?" Jason asked, pretending not to recognize the man before him.

"What if I am?" Daryl responded coldly.

A long silence followed before Jason replied. "If you're with them, I'll lower my weapon. If you're not, I'll keep it raised."

Rick and the others, thinking there were more walkers, arrived shortly after, only to find Jason pointing a gun at Daryl.

"Daryl?"

Shane recognized him instantly and was surprised to see their confrontation. He quickly explained to Jason.

"Jason, this is one of ours! He's Merle's younger brother, Daryl!"

Only then did Jason pretend to suddenly realize and quickly lower his gun.

"Oh, sorry. I thought an enemy was trying to attack the camp. My bad, man!"

Daryl, with a grim expression, lowered his crossbow and walked toward the deer.
