Through the Frosted Mirror

Chapter 20: Chapter 17: Ripples of Uncertainty

The morning air buzzed with the static hum of holo-screens flickering to life across New Eridu. Every major channel broadcasted the same breaking news: a devastating attack on the Section 6 base and their triumphant victory against the S-class Hollow that threatened the southern district. The feelings of triumph and tragedy painted a conflicting picture for the citizens.

The lead anchor, her voice steady but laced with urgency, addressed the camera. "This is Aurora Kim reporting live. Late last night, an S-class Hollow was successfully neutralized by Section 6 in what experts are calling one of the most perilous operations in recent memory. The Hollow, which had formed due to a catastrophic meltdown at one of the southern Ether power plants, posed a dire threat to the stability of the entire district. Thanks to the heroic efforts of Section 6, a major disaster was averted."

The screen shifted to grainy footage from within the Hollow, captured by Section 6's body cams. Ethereals lunged, explosions of frost and wind painted the battlefield, and the massive core Ethereal loomed, a shifting monstrosity. A slowed-down clip showed Miyabi unleashing her final, devastating strike, her blade emanating a wave of frost that obliterated the Hollow's core and froze its surroundings.

"Despite this extraordinary feat, tragedy struck at home," Aurora continued. "While Section 6 was engaged in the operation, their headquarters was attacked. Details remain scarce, but early reports confirm significant damage to the base's infrastructure and the disappearance of Mira, a young girl under Section 6's protection. Authorities are investigating the attackers' identity and motives."

The feed transitioned to a citizen interview. A disheveled man, his face streaked with grime, spoke with visible agitation. "I was in the southern district when it all started. I thought it was the end. Buildings were collapsing, Ethereals were everywhere. If it weren't for Section 6, I… I wouldn't be standing here."

A woman clutching her young daughter appeared next. Her expression was a mix of relief and anger. "They saved us, but how can we feel safe knowing their own base was attacked? If Section 6 can't protect themselves, what chance do the rest of us have?"

The anchor's voice returned, providing context. "While some citizens praise Section 6 as heroes, others question the implications of this attack. Does this mark a new wave of threats targeting New Eridu's defenders? And what does this mean for the city's future?"

In another segment, survivors recounted their experiences during the rescue operation. "They came out of nowhere, cutting through those creatures like they were nothing," said a young Ether technician who had been trapped in the power plant. "They risked everything to save us. I owe them my life."

"We're grateful," added an elderly woman, her voice trembling. "But it's hard to feel safe now. If even Section 6 can be attacked… what hope is there for the rest of us?"

The broadcast shifted again, now showing the Section 6 emblem overlayed with an image of the destroyed base. Aurora's tone softened, addressing the camera directly. "As investigations continue, the people of New Eridu are left grappling with mixed emotions. Pride in their protectors, fear for their safety, and uncertainty about the future. One thing is clear: the resilience of this city will be tested in the days to come."

The screen faded to a commercial break, leaving the city to process the duality of Section 6's recent actions—unparalleled heroism tempered by a stark reminder of vulnerability.
