TOXIC GEMS

Chapter 18: Chapter 18 – A Growing Distance

After finishing a late-night snack, Elian stretched lazily and grabbed his coat. "Alright, I should head back before my uncle thinks I've run off."

Taro glanced up from his seat. "You could stay the night, you know."

Elian smirked. "Tempting, but I think I've invaded your space enough." He leaned against the doorway, emerald eyes studying Taro for a second too long. "You gonna be okay?"

Taro scoffed. "Why wouldn't I be?"

Elian tilted his head, something unreadable in his gaze. "No reason."

Taro sighed. "Seriously, stop looking at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like I'm about to fall into a trap or something."

Elian's lips curved into a small smirk, but he didn't argue. Instead, he pushed off the wall and ruffled Taro's hair. "Alright, alright. I'll stop playing the overprotective best friend."

Taro swatted his hand away, grumbling. "Good."

Elian chuckled. "See you later, Taro-chan."

"Don't call me that."

Elian just laughed and walked out into the night.

The cool night air greeted him as he stepped outside. He pulled out his phone, debating whether to call for a taxi, but decided to walk instead. He needed time to think.

Something about Taro's attitude was bothering him. Not in an obvious way, but…

He trusts too easily.

Elian had known Taro long enough to understand that his friend always tried to see the best in people. It was an admirable trait—but also a dangerous one.

And that man.

That boss.

Elian had only seen him from a distance, but there was something about the way he carried himself, the way he watched Taro—like he was already certain of the outcome.

I don't like it.

As he walked through the quiet streets, his phone buzzed.

[Uncle: Are you staying out all night or coming home?]

Elian smirked, shaking his head before replying.

[Elian: I'm on my way. Don't wait up.]

Shoving his phone back into his pocket, he picked up his pace.

Something told him that this wasn't the last time he'd be stepping in to keep Taro from making a mistake.

But for now, all he could do was watch.

And wait.
