Chapter 242: Matt Murdock

The idea of arms companies stirring up trouble is not difficult to guess. They simply want to get rid of their competitors. In the past, when Stark Industries dominated alone, nobody said anything. But now that Hammer Industries is also trying to run over everyone's head, it's unacceptable!
Just by knowing that Justin Hammer was going to hold a product showcase at Stark Industrial Park, you could see how reckless this idiot usually was. He had enemies everywhere, but people used to just think of him as a clown, ignoring him.
The media and lawyers weren't afraid of making a big deal out of it; the bigger the better for them.
To concoct charges, professionals from various industries collectively came up with arguments about who should control guns and whether machines were reliable.
While overseeing the construction of the helicarrier, and guiding Hammer Industries to design version 2.0 of the robotic soldiers, Daisy was quite happy, but now she was completely fed up with these troublemakers.
The incident caused quite a stir, and she had to personally attend the trial. Wearing a relatively solemn dress, she sat in the defendant's seat, with the Chief of Staff and Director George by her side. The three of them didn't care much about the matter, chatting casually until the trial began.
The lawyers were spirited when they riled up the crowd, but they all shrank back during the trial. Maki had a notorious reputation, and there were often rumors in the legal world about competitors "disappearing," although there was no evidence.
Now, backed by a giant arms dealer, her intimidation level had gone up a notch. The group of silver-tongued lawyers collectively fell silent, and no one wanted to be the prosecutor's lawyer.
The New York courthouse was infuriated. In the end, the role of prosecutor was handed over to two inexperienced law students.
Daisy looked at the prosecutor with a cane, wearing sunglasses, followed by his fat assistant. She had a guess in mind, but still turned to Maki and asked, "What are the names of those two?"
Maki was already a leading figure in the legal world, and she didn't know two law students who had just obtained their qualifications. She turned to her assistant, who in turn asked her own assistant's assistant.
After a few rounds, the answer returned to Daisy, "The one with the cane is Matt Murdock. He's currently studying for a law degree at Columbia University. The person with him is his classmate and assistant, Foggy Nelson."
The yet-to-debut Daredevil! Daisy looked at them with some curiosity. How could a blind man fight crime at night, scaling tall buildings effortlessly? One could say that while God closed one door for Mr. Matt Murdock, he opened a very large window.
"That blind guy has powers. Don't talk about private matters," Daisy held her forehead with her right hand, using telepathy to tell Maki.
Maki was very alert and didn't make any moves to turn around and look. She just looked through Matt's information again. When she saw the information about Matt's childhood accident that caused him to lose his sight, she scratched a line next to it with her nails, then glanced at Daisy for confirmation. Daisy nodded gently.
Even with Mr. Murdock's heightened hearing, he couldn't hear the conversation in the mental world. Daisy and the others inquiring about the prosecutor's information was a normal thing and didn't raise any suspicion.
He mimicked tapping the cane a bit as a blind person, and with the help of his assistant Foggy, he sat in the prosecutor's seat.
Foggy was a bit nervous. He couldn't understand why his friend took on this case. On their side, they only had a hysterical semi-crazy middle-aged accuser, along with two rookie lawyers who hadn't graduated from law school yet.
On the other side? A beautiful arms dealer, a highly esteemed and incorruptible New York Police Department Commissioner, along with the moderately influential Army Chief of Staff from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Plus, there was also Ms. Maki, the lawyer whose stomping could silence the entire New York legal community. As long as the judge had any sense, it was clear which side they should favor.
"We have a chance of winning; the jury will support us," Matt encouraged his fat friend.
His friend remained skeptical. A group of random grandpas and aunts from the street, of course, would prefer looser law enforcement from their perspective. But from another angle, it wasn't impossible for the judge to rule regardless of the jury's opinion.
Thinking of a bleak future, Foggy felt like his friend had led him into a trap.
The trial quickly began. As the prosecution, Matt first stated their side's viewpoint...
"Machines don't have law enforcement powers. How can we entrust law enforcement to a group of machines? Of course, Hammer Industries has proposed a method of remote control by humans. On this issue, I would like to ask Ms. Johnson, what happens if there's an operator error? Who is responsible for the resulting casualties?"
"If someone has a grudge and happens to have the authority to control robotic soldiers, and in exercising that authority, they commit murder through the machines, how does the law define their actions? Is it premeditated murder or manslaughter? Or is it just a machine error?"
"I also want to ask Commissioner George, while it's great that officers can control robotic soldiers to reduce casualties, I've always held the highest respect for the NYPD. But do officers then have the right to judge? How many citizens are accidentally injured by officers each year?"
Matt Murdock's words were powerful and his demeanor unyielding, embodying the image of a resolute young man with a physical disability who was determined to uphold the law.
If she wasn't the defendant, Daisy would have applauded him.
Unfortunately, his words were too vague and were all deflected by Maki with responses like "the hypothesis is not valid" or "there is no evidence to suggest that the situation described by Mr. Murdock would occur" and so on.
Despite Matt's efforts, the trial remained uninspired. With the prosecution aiming for attention-grabbing arguments and evidence, both sides' arguments were ambiguous, and both Miss Maid and Matt remained steadfast in their respective positions, making both seem reasonable!
Bang! The judge struck the gavel, announcing an adjournment. As for when the trial would resume? Even the judge didn't know!
...
Exiting the New York courthouse, everyone was busy, each returning to their own place.
"Mr. Murdock, I'm just doing good deeds. Your actions are equivalent to being an accomplice to those arms dealers. You've helped them target my company, only to make this market even more chaotic. Your stance today was wrong; you should be focusing on the civilians." As Daisy walked out of the courthouse, she passed by Matt. Her speech was normally paced as she said those few words.
Matt raised his head slightly, seemingly listening attentively. He maintained the same posture until Daisy left.
His friend, Foggy, pulled him, "Everyone's gone. Stop listening; let's go back too."
Matt seemed lost in thought for a few seconds before turning to his friend. "Was the lady who just passed by me, Ms. Johnson? Is Ms. Johnson particularly burly?"
