Chapter 86 - Did you meet a friend?

Although Meng Yao’er didn’t explain clearly, Tang Yuan had read through Meng Yao’er and Su Qingyao’s past from the system, and it was somewhat complicated. She didn’t want to get involved in matters of the heart.

“There will be legal repercussions for him. It won’t be long before that day comes. I hope you won’t act impulsively in the meantime,” Tang Yuan still urged her seriously, not wanting her to step into the abyss.

Meng Yao’er stared blankly at the lake’s surface, picking up a sharp stone and holding it tightly in her hand. She didn’t know how much time had passed, but when she turned to look at Tang Yuan, her eyes were filled with mist. “How should I cooperate with you?”

She agreed.

Even though she wished with all her might that Lu Shan’en would die immediately, Tang Yuan had offered her a second option. Though indirect, the success rate might be much higher.

After their conversation, Tang Yuan followed Meng Yao’er to an old residential area.

Meng Yao’er unlocked the door. “This was the house I used to live in with my mother. After she passed, no one lived here, and it was registered under my name.”

The small one-bedroom house had an altar with offerings and a black-and-white memorial photo on the wooden table directly in front of the door. The long-untouched house smelled of old furniture, but the floor and walls were clean—no dust, no cobwebs.

“Wait for me outside. I’ll get it for you,” Meng Yao’er said.

Tang Yuan paused, standing at the door and waiting. The residential area had old buildings, some of which were already deemed hazardous, yet none had been demolished. It took two hours to drive from Longcheng to here.

Looking up, she saw the web of tangled power lines in the half-darkening sky. Some windows lit up faintly.

Tang Yuan took out her phone to check the time: 7 p.m.

There were ten missed calls from Jiang Zi.

Tang Yuan’s pupils shuddered. Oh no! She’d put the phone on silent and forgotten to turn it off!

As she was about to unlock her phone to return the call, another one came through.

Tang Yuan’s heart skipped a beat, but she steeled herself and answered. “Hello? Sister~”

“Where did you go?”

“I… I…” Tang Yuan’s eyes accidentally caught a familiar figure, and her words stuck in her throat.

Seeing the figure turn to leave, Tang Yuan hurriedly called out, “Sister Su!”

It was Su Qingyao! What was she doing here?

Jiang Zi’s voice continued on the phone, “What’s wrong? Did you meet a friend?”

“Mm, yeah. I’m about to head back now.” Tang Yuan quickly replied to Jiang Zi while watching Su Qingyao hesitate momentarily before quickening her pace. Tang Yuan instinctively took two steps forward.

A bag was suddenly thrust into her hand, and a figure quickly darted out. Only then did Tang Yuan realize that Meng Yao’er had gone after her, leaving the door wide open.

Tang Yuan could only help close the door, and the two figures were already gone.

Under the dim lights, shadows blended together, and the area felt eerily empty, with fewer and fewer people living here.

Clutching the bag, Tang Yuan continued speaking into the phone. “Sister, don’t wait for me for dinner tonight. It’s far, and it’ll take me about two and a half hours to get home.”

“I’ll come pick you up.”

Tang Yuan quickly refused. “No, no need.”

Jiang Zi’s tone was unreadable. “I’m already here.”

“Huh?”

Tang Yuan froze for a moment, her steps instinctively leading her toward the exit of the residential area. After a few steps, a car’s headlights suddenly flashed on, casting a long shadow.

Tang Yuan jumped, turned around, and saw the familiar McLaren.

Sister was waiting for her here? When did she arrive?

Tang Yuan’s mind went blank as she hung up the phone and saw the car’s back door open. A slender figure stepped out.

Tang Yuan’s eyes brightened. She rushed into her arms. “Sister! What are you doing here?!”

The air-conditioned car made Jiang Zi’s body cold to the touch. She caught Tang Yuan, pulling her tightly into her embrace, and gradually warmed her up.

Jiang Zi didn’t answer Tang Yuan’s question. Instead, she pressed her down onto the hood of the car, one hand gripping the back of her neck, and kissed her fiercely, stealing her breath away.

The sudden forceful kiss caught Tang Yuan off guard. The document bag dropped to the ground, and she could only lie back, her head tilted, passively enduring the assault, which was far from gentle.

After a sticky and suffocating moment, they separated, their heavy breaths filling the air, making Tang Yuan’s ears burn. She attempted to push Jiang Zi away, but was met with another intense kiss.

“Mm…”

Tang Yuan’s gaze grew hazy, her body turning to mush.

After what felt like an eternity, Jiang Zi finally let her go, picking up the bag from the ground. With one hand still holding her wrist, she pulled Tang Yuan into the backseat. She entered first, followed by Jiang Zi, who closed the door.

“Drive.”

Tang Yuan barely regained her senses, and her gaze shifted to the front seat—there was a driver!

The place where they had just kissed was right in front of the driver?!

Tang Yuan closed her eyes in embarrassment. She wanted to die.

Jiang Zi tossed the document bag into a corner where no one would care about it. Then she pulled Tang Yuan onto her lap, one hand on the back of her head, pushing her toward herself again.

Tang Yuan quickly pushed her away. “No, no more kissing, sister. Can we not right now?”

Her mouth and tongue felt numb.

Jiang Zi fixed her gaze on her, silent. They hadn’t even said a word yet.

Tang Yuan knew Jiang Zi was angry, so she leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “Sister, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have ignored your calls. I was wrong. I won’t leave my phone on silent next time. Please don’t be angry.”

The closeness between them was intimate. But Jiang Zi still didn’t feel satisfied. Her eyes lowered, hiding the storm that could destroy everything, and she spoke in a hoarse voice, “I couldn’t reach you.”

Tang Yuan sincerely apologized. “It’s all my fault. I made you worry.”

“I suddenly remembered some things I had to deal with today. I didn’t tell you in advance. I’m sorry, sister.”

Jiang Zi nestled against her neck, eyes closed, and said nothing more.

The car continued to drive smoothly, and the silence made Tang Yuan’s thoughts drift again.

【I can’t tell sister about the mission. I was rushing to see Meng Yao’er today that I forgot to check in.】

【But today was fruitful. Meng Yao’er is now my strongest ally.】

【I even saw Su Qingyao earlier. They ran out together. I wonder how they’re doing now.】

【From her, I’ve now got part of the transaction records between Lu Shan’en and Chu Yu, and evidence of Lu Shan’en’s motive for murder. She had collected all these materials, showing she once wanted to fight for justice.】

Eight years. From sixteen to twenty-four, Meng Yao’er had endured for many years. She once believed that as long as she proved Lu Shan’en was evil, justice would be on her side. So she secretly collected much of his criminal evidence.

But sadly, the goddess of justice never came. She could only rely on herself.

Now, Meng Yao’er handed over these materials to Tang Yuan—materials that had never been useful before.

Tang Yuan hadn’t had the chance to check them yet. Her eyes fell on the brown paper bag beside her.

“Hiss—”

Jiang Zi bit her collarbone, using considerable force. It stung.

“Sister.” Tang Yuan pushed her head away in dissatisfaction, but couldn’t make her stop.

Jiang Zi then gently licked the wound.
