Chapter 12: 012. Little Luffy Was Confused by Commissar Ron
The video played, showing Ron smiling as he looked at little Luffy.
"Do you want to be an excellent Marine soldier in the future?" he asked.
"(Current) Tashigi: Ah, Commissar Ron is so gentle. I really envy Admiral Luffy. I wish I could have been personally invited by Commissar Ron to join the Marines."
"(Current) Yamato: Haha! But I was invited by Commissar Ron!"
"(Current) Hina: I'm jealous."
"(Original) Kaido: What the hell?! Yamato, you unfilial brat! You actually ran off to be a Marine?! I'm furious!"
"(Current) Kaido: Speak respectfully about my little girl, or I'll beat you up!"
The original-world Kaido was completely confused. What on earth had happened in that other timeline?
Meanwhile, little Luffy stared at Ron, stunned.
This was a question he had never truly considered before.
His grandfather, Garp, was a Marine, but his constant rough treatment made the Marines seem unappealing. The rigid rules, the strict discipline—it just didn't interest him.
But after meeting Shanks and his crew, Luffy had been captivated by the idea of adventure, camaraderie, and absolute freedom.
If someone had asked him before whether he wanted to be a Marine, he would have immediately rejected the idea.
But now…
Watching Ron, seeing his composure and strength, Luffy hesitated for the first time.
He seemed so cool.
Could it be that being a Marine wasn't as bad as he thought?
Then, he shook his head. No! His mind was made up!
With his chest puffed out, Luffy declared proudly, "No! I don't want to be a Marine! I want to be a Pirate! I want to be the King of Pirates!"
"(Current) Akainu: Admiral Luffy, I didn't expect you used to be so ambitious! Hahaha!"
"(Present) Luffy: Ugh… Everyone has embarrassing moments from their past. I was so young, so dumb. I can't believe I actually said that…"
"(Original) Luffy: I AM GOING TO BE THE KING OF THE PIRATES!"
"(Present) Luffy: Seriously, can you not shout that? It's embarrassing! Looking back, I can't believe I went around declaring that to everyone. I was basically just a kid yelling nonsense."
"(Original) Luffy: It's a cool slogan!"
"(Present) Luffy: Change your name. I don't want people to know we're the same person."
"(Original) Garp: See?! This little brat will never be a Marine! I knew it! He's just like my Luffy. I swear, I want to punch him through the screen."
"(Current) Sengoku: Looks like the Garp in that world already took care of it."
Back in the video, a furious Garp stormed into the tavern.
"You ungrateful little brat! You want to be the Pirate King?! I'll beat some sense into you!"
Luffy yelped and immediately hid behind Ron.
"Grandpa! What are you doing here?!"
"Garp!"
Ron's sharp voice cut through the commotion.
Garp froze.
"Political Commissar Ron, this kid is stubborn. He needs a good beating!" Garp argued.
How dare this brat declare his pirate ambitions right in front of Political Commissar Ron? This was unacceptable!
Ron narrowed his eyes.
"A gentleman uses words, not fists. Is this how you educate a child?"
Garp sighed in defeat.
"You're right, Political Commissar Ron. I was too impulsive."
"(Original) Sengoku: What the hell, Garp? Why are you so obedient all of a sudden?"
"(Current) Garp: I've always been like this. Got a problem with that?"
In his own world, Garp smirked. It all depended on who was doing the persuading. He would never listen to Sengoku, but Political Commissar Ron? That was a different story.
"(Original) Sengoku: Do you think I don't know you?"
Ron turned back to Luffy and spoke seriously.
"Tell me, why do you want to be a pirate?"
Luffy answered without hesitation.
"I want to be the freest person in this ocean!"
"So you think being a pirate means being free?"
"Of course!"
Ron pointed outside at the Red Hair Pirates, who were being taken away in chains.
"Do they look free to you?"
Luffy hesitated.
"Well… That's because they weren't strong enough."
"(Current) Shanks: Let's get one thing straight—it's not that we were weak. It's that our opponent was just too strong!"
Ron raised an eyebrow.
"Who do you think is the strongest pirate?"
"Roger! The Pirate King!"
"And what happened to him?"
"...He was executed."
For the first time, Luffy seemed uncertain.
"(Original) Roger: Hey! I turned myself in! The Marines could never catch me, let alone execute me!"
"(Current) Roger: Actually, in this world, I was captured by Ron."
"(Current) Garp: As expected of Political Commissar Ron. He made Luffy rethink his choices with just a few words."
Ron continued, his voice calm yet firm.
"You want to go on adventures with your friends, right?"
Luffy nodded.
"You want to find the treasure of the Pirate King?"
Luffy nodded again.
"You also want to protect the people you care about, right?"
Another nod.
"So, tell me, besides pirates, what other group could accomplish all those things while being even freer?"
Luffy blinked.
The gears in his young mind were turning.
Without thinking, he blurted out, "The Marines?"
Ron smiled but didn't answer.
Instead, he asked, "You never actually wanted to be a pirate, did you? You just thought that only pirates could achieve your dreams—because that's what Shanks told you, right?"
Luffy slowly nodded.
Yes… He wanted adventure. He wanted freedom. He wanted treasure. But did that really mean he had to be a pirate?
Wasn't it true that Marines also traveled the world? That they sought treasure and fought powerful enemies? And unlike pirates, they didn't have to hide or run away.
Wait a minute…
Shanks never told him that.
Little Luffy felt his worldview shatter.
Outside the video, the original-world Shanks sighed.
"(Original) Shanks: Damn… Commissar Ron is terrifying."
"(Original) Whitebeard: This is the power of a true leader. Without even mentioning the Marines, he's already planted the idea in Luffy's heart."
"(Original) Kaido: That brat got brainwashed in under five minutes. This guy is dangerous."
"(Current) Sengoku: This is why Political Commissar Ron is so respected. He doesn't force people to think a certain way. He just makes them realize the truth on their own."
"(Original) Sengoku: No way. There's no way that kid will actually become a Marine. I refuse to believe it."
"(Current) Garp: Just wait and see."
The screen flickered.
The conversation between Ron and Luffy had left the original-world characters speechless.
If even someone as stubborn as Luffy could be swayed, was there anything Political Commissar Ron couldn't do?
