"Heh heh."

Orochimaru crossed his arms, a sly smile on his face as he looked at his teacher. "So, you're asking me to manipulate my own students, huh?"

"Don't you know how much they respect their teacher?"

The Third Hokage's face twitched slightly at Orochimaru's words. Keeping a stern expression, he cut to the chase, "Stop beating around the bush. What do you want?"

If anyone knew Orochimaru well, it was Sarutobi Hiruzen.

Respect? Caring for his students?

All nonsense.

With Orochimaru, it was always about the price.

Over the years, Orochimaru had become more and more pragmatic, almost disturbingly so. His obsession with the pursuit of immortality and mastering countless jutsu had stripped away whatever ideals he might have once had.

He was no longer the obedient, respectful student he used to be.

Not to mention, Orochimaru's recent involvement with Danzo was no accident—Hiruzen had intentionally turned a blind eye, hoping Orochimaru's ambitions could help keep Danzo's increasingly rogue Root division in check.

Still, it wasn't like Orochimaru had no respect for his teacher. Deep down, there was a sliver of genuine regard for the man who had guided him.

"I have two conditions," Orochimaru said, raising two fingers. "I want the Edo Tensei technique and the Spirit Transformation Jutsu. And if possible, I'd like copies of all the research notes from the Second Hokage's studies on these techniques."

"What?!"

The Third Hokage's face darkened immediately, his brows furrowing deeply. "What do you want those for? Especially Edo Tensei! That's a forbidden technique—it's sacrilegious and one of the most dangerous jutsu ever created!"

He was increasingly worried about Orochimaru's dangerous ambitions.

The Orochimaru standing before him now was far removed from the once-bright prodigy he had been.

"Oh, what else?" Orochimaru smirked. "Both techniques deal with souls, don't they? Naturally, I want to study the essence of the soul and uncover the secrets of immortality. Sensei, my goals have always been clear—you know this better than anyone."

Orochimaru's tone was calm and almost conversational, but the Third Hokage could sense the calculating mind behind those words.

He knew Orochimaru didn't expect him to hand over the Edo Tensei technique without resistance. That demand was just a setup to negotiate for something else.

This wasn't Orochimaru's first time employing such tactics.

"Absolutely not! Forget it!"

The Third Hokage's voice was firm, though laced with frustration. "You can have the Spirit Transformation Jutsu, but not Edo Tensei! I won't stand by and let you go down this dark path!"

"Oh?" Orochimaru feigned surprise, dragging out the word teasingly.

"What dark path?" Orochimaru thought to himself. "This is just about you not wanting me to become uncontrollable."

He knew his teacher too well to believe Hiruzen's reasoning.

But arguing further would be a waste of time. Orochimaru nodded with mock sincerity. "Fine, that'll do. But in that case, I can't promise to try my best unless you also give me 5,000 of those Uchiha-manufactured nutritional pills."

"What?!"

The Third Hokage blinked in disbelief. "Five thousand? Why do you need so many of those?"

He wasn't just baffled by the number—it was also the fact that those pills were considered strategic resources.

"Come on, Sensei. You know they're incredibly effective for enhancing training results. I've been using them to push my limits, and at this point, I can't maintain my pace without them."

"Funds are tight, and I've had to cut back on my experiments just to keep up my training regimen."

Hiruzen frowned deeply. "Five thousand is too much! The village only gets around ten thousand pills allocated monthly—there's barely enough to go around as it is."

The pills, manufactured by the Uchiha, were in high demand. Although production had increased significantly in recent years, monthly supplies were tightly regulated. Even with his position, Hiruzen often found it challenging to secure additional allocations for his faction.

Orochimaru's request wasn't just excessive—it bordered on impossible.

"Too much? Then how about cash instead?" Orochimaru offered, unbothered. "I'll just buy them directly from Tsunade. I'm sure she'll give me a good deal—I am her brother's mentor, after all."

The Third Hokage froze for a moment, then scowled.

"Huh?"

The Third Hokage's eyes lit up as he looked at Orochimaru. "Are you saying you could get more of those nutritional pills from Tsunade?"

Hearing this, Orochimaru instantly understood what his teacher was implying and rolled his eyes. "Sensei, stop overthinking this."

"This kind of favor can only be asked once—it's not something I can keep going back for. People run out of goodwill eventually."

"Besides, even if I were willing to burn through my personal connections for this, Tsunade and the Uchiha clan aren't stupid. They'll figure out I'm just acting as your middleman. When that happens, both of us will be in trouble."

"So, let's just drop that idea, okay?"

"Here's the deal: give me the Spirit Transformation Jutsu and 5000 pills' worth of money. Take it or leave it."

Orochimaru wasn't planning to brainwash anyone for the Third Hokage, regardless of whether they struck a deal or not.

Even if the Third agreed, Orochimaru had no intention of following through.

He wasn't foolish. The political landscape of Konoha was crystal clear to him.

Anyone with a brain could see the future belonged to the Uchiha, Senju, and Uzumaki clans.

Helping the Third Hokage target them now? That would be nothing but self-destruction.

When it came to his core interests, not even his teacher could sway him.

"Fine! I'll agree to your terms!"

The Third Hokage hesitated for a moment before finally giving in.

Although 5000 pills' worth of money was a hefty sum, he had been embezzling funds from Konoha over the years and could barely scrape together the required amount.

"Alright then, hand over the cash and the jutsu. Once I have those, I'll get to work."

Orochimaru shamelessly stretched out his hand.

"Fine, fine! Just don't screw this up!"

With a sigh, the Third Hokage reluctantly transcribed the Spirit Transformation Jutsu scroll and handed over 30 million ryō, his face filled with pain as he passed them to Orochimaru.

"Thanks, Sensei. I'll be on my way now!"

Orochimaru accepted the items with a sly smile and quickly left the Hokage's office.

"Let's hope you succeed..."

The Third Hokage exhaled a puff of smoke, mumbling to himself.

Of course, this wasn't his main plan. He was counting on Danzo to take care of the Uchiha and their allies on the battlefield.

— — —

After leaving the Hokage's office, Orochimaru rounded up Nawaki and the others, taking some time to find Tsunade and her group at the Akimichi Barbecue Shop.

He joined them and ordered some food.

During the meal, Orochimaru discreetly set up a soundproof barrier and shared the Third Hokage's plans with Tsunade and the others.

Even Nawaki was included in the discussion.

"What the hell? Is that old man insane? He really thinks he can pull this off?"

Tsunade's temper flared instantly, her face turning furious. "Don't make me go and kill him right now!"

They hadn't acted against the Third Hokage yet, not because they lacked the strength, but because the timing wasn't right.

First, the Third still had a decent reputation and a strong support base from his years of leadership.

Second, Konoha was in the middle of a war.

If infighting broke out now, the other four major villages would pounce on Konoha like vultures, dividing the Land of Fire among themselves.

This wasn't something Tsunade or the Uchiha clan wanted to see happen.

The Third Hokage wanted to weaken the Uchiha and their allies on the battlefield, but Tsunade and her group had the same plan in reverse.

In the end, whoever outsmarted the other would win.

Besides, a significant number of their elite forces had already signed contracts with Kaito, granting them life-saving teleportation abilities.

It was almost impossible for them to suffer heavy casualties.

From start to finish, they were playing from an unbeatable position.

"Why would the Hokage act like this? This isn't how a hokage should behave!"

Nawaki couldn't believe what he was hearing.

Despite everything Kaito and the others had taught him, Nawaki still held onto a shred of idealism. He'd even harbored some lingering respect for the Third Hokage.

But now, Orochimaru's revelations shattered any goodwill he had left.

The Third Hokage wanted to brainwash him? To use him against the Senju, Uchiha, and Uzumaki clans in the future?

Was there anything more sinister than this?

"That's no Hokage; he's a fraud!"

Nawaki's face turned red with anger, and he declared firmly.

"Pfft!"

Tsunade couldn't help but chuckle, patting Nawaki on the shoulder. "Finally, you've come to your senses!"

"How many times have we told you over the years? You kept thinking the old man as the Third Hokage had a moral bottom line!"

"Now, do you see his true colors?"

"For his own gain—and his family's—he'll stoop to anything."

"Don't let him fool you again!"

"If you ever let him manipulate you into betraying our clan, I'll strangle you myself before anyone else gets the chance!"

Nawaki flinched at his sister's words, his face turning pale as he shifted away from her.

"Relax, Sis! I'd never betray our clan. Trust me, I'm not that stupid!"

"You don't need to worry about me doing something that dumb. Just... calm down, okay?"

He shuddered at the thought of his sister actually strangling him.

"Good! As long as you understand."

Tsunade's expression softened, and she gave him a reassuring smile.
