Chapter 325: The Third Fated One
"Fire!" Upon the princess's command, the mounted weapons on the town walls fired, aiming to kill as many enemy soldiers as possible.
Their blasts were soon joined by the archers and mages, who unleashed a storm of arrows and elemental magic.
But the Crimson Sun Empire wasn't idle. Their siege weapons retaliated with brutal force, aiming to crack the town's defenses.
Bulky soldiers in heavy armor surged forward, hoisting large ladders. Their goal: mount them against the town gates to create a path for melee units to breach the defenses.
Most were cut down before they could get close. But a few succeeded—heaving the ladders into place and scaling the walls.
There, they were met by the defenders of the Draconian Empire. Steel clashed with steel as a vicious melee broke out atop the battlements.
A deadly clash erupted. It was clear, no matter who won, the cost would be hefty.
Usually, Sofia would have entered the battle as well, helping her subjects, but now it was impossible.
Across from her stood Silver—a member of the Crimson Sun Council. Her power was unknown, her reputation terrifying.
And yet, Sofia was not afraid.
She knew that if she couldn't face an opponent like this, she had no right to rule.
"It is certain you will win this fight." Before Sofia faced her enemy, Vera reassured her once again.
How much did Vera truly know? How far could she see with those visions of hers?
Other people would have doubted Vera's words, but not Sofia. She had faith in her friend.
As such, she shot downward from the town walls, ready to meet Silver head-on.
Upon seeing that, the jade beauty's lips curled into a breathtaking smile as she met the princess head-on.
"It seems you're not just good at commanding. You've got courage, too. I like that!" she called out, clashing with Sofia mid-air.
Sofia summoned water to swirl around her, shaping it into blades that slashed and danced toward her foe.
"But you aren't winning this battle. It's not that you are weak, you just met a person that counters you perfectly," Silver spoke as her eyes shined.
In an instant, the blades froze. The ground beneath them frosted over as the air grew sharp with biting cold.
'So she is able to freeze matter!' Sofia realized, her eyes darkening for a moment.
Silver was her worst possible opponent.
But doubt didn't linger. Vera's words echoed again. She must have known this would happen. Knew Sofia would waver the moment she discovered her disadvantage.
So why had she still said she would win?
Rather than a look of despair like Silver had expected, a small smile crept upon Sofia's face.
"This just means I'll defeat you with skill alone!" she declared, swinging her blade with renewed resolve.
As the armies collided, dozens of battles erupted—but none matched the clash of the two commanders.
Both of the women moved with grace, avoiding the other's strikes with their agility and flexibility. If they failed to dodge the attacks, they would manage to block or parry them.
Ice pillars formed, aiming to deal damage to Sofia by making use of her blind spot, but she wasn't going to lose that easily as she willed water walls to appear before her and the attacks.
While Silver was able to freeze her water, she wasn't able to do so at a moment's notice. As such, the walls succeeded and managed to stop the attacks.
Seconds, minutes, hours.
This wasn't just a battle between the two women, but between two armies.
Men and women on both sides fell, their eyes clouded with regret. The more they lost, the fiercer their comrades became. Vengeance burned hotter than fear.
Eventually, most of the army's forces were exhausted, unable to continue the fight. Simultaneously, both of them stopped, taking a few minutes to catch their breaths.
Their eyes naturally shifted to the two women that continued their deadly clash.
Sofia bore countless injuries on her body. Her cheek was sliced open, a large wound on her left shoulder, panting for more air.
Meanwhile, Silver seemed unbothered, like the fight was just a walk in the park. It was clear that she hadn't been serious all this time.
Realizing that fact made Sofia more anxious. Why did her opponent have to counter her power perfectly?!
Up on the walls that had yet to be breached by the enemy forces stood Vera, watching the fight calmly.
While Sofia had been fighting against the member of the Crimson Sun Council, Vera was the one that commanded the forces.
"Lady Vera," A soldier beside her asked, "Shouldn't we help the princess? Or do you believe she's stronger than Silver?"
"No," Vera said plainly. "She's weaker. It's remarkable she's lasted this long."
The soldier blinked in disbelief. "But… didn't you tell her she'd win?"
"I did." The masked woman's voice remained calm.
"She might be weaker, but that doesn't mean she will lose. It's the opposite. The fact that she is the weaker one will make her come out on top," Vera spoke evenly.
The guard had more questions but decided to keep quiet. It seemed that the battle was coming to its conclusion.
Sofia's breathing had become even more irregular, while her enemy didn't seem concerned at all.
'Is that how I die?' she asked herself. She had pushed herself to the limit but hadn't managed to overcome Silver.
Seeing the pitiful state the princess was in, Silver felt saddened. It seemed Sofia had proved to be too weak after all. She readied herself to make the finishing blow.
Before she could, however, a bead of sweat formed on her forehead. Her body trembled for the first time in a long while as a chill ran down her spine.
She was an experienced fighter, so she immediately knew — this was her instincts telling her to run.
Something devastating was approaching.
"Fall back!" she shouted, making her soldiers concerned.
She looked like she was about to win against the enemy — why did she want to turn back?
But they didn't complain. They did as they were told. Despite the large loss of forces on both sides, the Crimson Sun Empire had lost, as they weren't able to breach the walls at all.
A smile crept upon Sofia's face as she witnessed the enemy running away.
"For the Princess!" the soldiers chanted in unison, grateful for her Highness.
"I… did it," Sofia muttered as she gazed at her trembling hands. She didn't know why the enemy ran away, but she didn't question it. She had managed to win in the end.
Unlike the soldiers present, Vera didn't look excited, as if she had known this was bound to happen.
Instead, she gazed far at the horizon, at the reason the enemy forces had pulled away, a smile crept upon her face. "Fate… can really be a cruel thing," she muttered.
Over the vast horizon, a lone figure walked. Her beautiful silk blond hair flowing in the wind as her emerald eyes pried the area around.
She hadn't bothered to disguise herself, her pointy ears were out on full display.
Sira stopped, sensing something in the distance.
"Finally, I sense a third Fated One on this continent!" she proclaimed as she continued her steps, going toward the town that had just survived a devastating attack.
