Undying Love: Maria the Orphan

Chapter 16: Chapter Sixteen (Alfredo’s Arrival)

I opened my eyes to the morning light streaming through the balcony, heralding the start of a new day. I had no idea what events it might bring, but I knew that in a few hours, my brother Alfredo would be with us. I hoped to finish work early enough to be home before his arrival.

Reluctantly, I pushed off my blanket, which seemed almost relieved to part ways with me. I took a quick shower, got dressed, and applied light makeup to mask my deep sadness and the weariness etched into my features from endless pondering. I resolved to stop overthinking and let life flow as it willed. Descending the stairs quickly, I caused a commotion that was met with Sophie's laughter.

"There she is—Snow White, our lively, cheerful girl. You're finally back! Come have breakfast with us, dear," she called out.

"Auntie, I missed your toasted bread. Where's my hot coffee?" I asked playfully.

With a broad smile, she replied, "Oh, my little one is hungry! Where have you been? I'll get your favorite coffee right away."

"I don't know how I'd live without you. By the way, where's Mom?" I asked.

Mom's voice answered, "I'm coming, sweetheart, to have breakfast with you. Snow White, it's so good to see you back to yourself. That's how you should have been all along."

Forcing a smile, I replied, "Everything in its own time, Mom. I've realized that sorrow and overthinking won't change anything."

Mom nodded in agreement, adding, "That's true, dear. Now eat quickly so you won't be late for work."

"Don't worry, Mom. I'll be back in time to help prepare dinner for Alfredo," I reassured her.

I kissed Mom and Sophie before heading to work. Immersing myself in my tasks, I wished to regain my love for my job, my colleagues, and my passion for the latest fashion designs. I decided not to dwell on love or attachment anymore—my heart already belonged to someone, and it seemed impossible to give that place to anyone else.

Time flew by, and soon it was time to leave. On my way home, I met Livia, who was eager to see Alfredo, her long-time love. She dressed in her finest outfit and wore a perfume that filled the air around her.

Startled by her appearance, I teased, "Sophie, you're clearly excited to see Alfredo. You look stunning and elegant. I'm sure my brother will fall for you—you're dazzling."

Blushing, she replied, "Thank you, Snow White. But I could never outshine you. I just hope he notices me this time; I'm tired of being ignored."

"Don't say that, Livia. I know Alfredo can be a bit proud and reluctant to admit his feelings. Maybe he's waiting for you to make the first move. Try to charm him," I encouraged her.

"This time, he won't escape. I'll make sure he falls into my trap—I've had enough of waiting," she declared determinedly.

Together, we headed home, eager to see Alfredo. We quickened our pace as if someone were chasing us. Upon arriving, we found Alfredo lounging on the couch beside Mom, accompanied by a guest. Who was this guest, and why had Alfredo brought him along?

I ran to my brother and hugged him tightly, savoring the familiar scent of our father and the safety his presence brought. If only he could stay and never leave us again. Life feels so empty when loved ones depart.

I extended my hand to greet his friend, who held it a little too long, his gaze fixed on me until I gently withdrew. I could no longer tolerate another man's attention—I wanted to live freely for myself, with a mind unburdened by worry.

Sophie prepared a wonderful dinner in Alfredo's honor, joined by Livia, who chose to sit next to Jack, Alfredo's guest. She chatted with him non-stop, while his other friend, John, kept stealing glances at me whenever he could. I wanted to excuse myself, but I stayed for Alfredo's sake.

During dinner, I asked my brother if he'd found the file he was looking for in his room. To my surprise, he revealed it was missing, causing him a significant financial loss that would take years to recover. When I showed him a photo of Jack, he sighed deeply, confirming Jack had taken it. Jack wasn't just his business rival—he had also stolen something priceless: my emotions.

Overwhelmed, I excused myself and went to my room, tears streaming down my face. Jack had betrayed my trust, not only by taking the file but also by stealing my feelings. How could I have been so naive?

I changed into my pajamas and buried myself under the covers, seeking refuge from reality. I wanted to sleep, to escape into unconsciousness where perhaps, some semblance of solace might exist.

Holding a picture of my father, I felt as though he could hear my anguish and share in my sorrow. He didn't look happy either. I kissed the photo, turned off the light, and let myself drift into the void of sleep, hoping my mind would finally find peace.
