Chapter 775: Reencounter with an Acquaintance
Others also let out perverse laughter, their gazes toward the female doctor growing heated.
Women in Prison No. 444 were rare, especially young and beautiful ones.
Even if there were any, they would usually be monopolized by Yuwen, the Prison Chief. When Erin first came to the prison, she attracted a lot of attention, including a few people who wanted to approach her romantically. However, she rejected all of them.
Rumor had it that during her student years, this woman had joined many volunteer organizations, her sense of justice overflowing. She would constantly nitpick at power structures and public officials and even had connections with several newspapers and radio stations.
Even Yuwen didn't dare to use force against her, fearing trouble. As for others, they wouldn't even dare try; they could only indulge in fantasies.
That was, until this prison revolt. Jose and others originally planned to protect Yuwen to curry favor, but halfway there, they ran into other scattered prison guards who told them that the elder Vampire had already been captured by Anastasia.
Then, they witnessed a squad of Ares warriors taking on ten guards single-handedly, defeating dozens of them. Jose and the rest quickly concluded they'd be better off fleeing.
While fleeing, they even changed out of their uniforms and donned prison garb, disguising themselves as inmates to find a place to hide until the riot was over. Unexpectedly, they stumbled upon the hiding female doctor.
Seeing Erin, Jose was startled, fearing that his disguise might be exposed by her, revealing their cowardice in fleeing without a fight against the rebels.
But Jose quickly regained his composure, recalling how Erin had frequently caused him trouble before, even threatening to report him to the Citizen Rights Protection Bureau for abusing prisoners.
So Jose steeled himself, deciding to use this opportunity to eliminate this nuisance.
The other prison guards also seemed intrigued by the idea of spending the night with the female doctor, particularly as they recalled a rumor spreading among the inmates.
Many of them began to believe the end of the universe might truly be nigh; in such a moment, laws and morals no longer mattered—they might as well enjoy themselves before death.
Erin realized the danger as well. Watching her usual colleagues approach her step by step, she couldn't help but scream again.
"Shut her mouth!" Jose, worried that her screams would attract other prisoners or the Ares warriors, signaled to one of his subordinates.
The guard pulled off two socks, rolled them into a ball, and stuffed them into Erin's mouth.
"Dr. Erin, you should save your strength and shut up. Heh-heh-heh... we've got seventeen people here."
The female doctor, desperate, pulled out a hidden surgical knife from her person, saying, "Stay back! Don't come any closer, or I won't hold back!"
The guards looked at the small knife in her hand, barely 20 centimeters long, then at their firearms, and burst into gleeful laughter again.
But as they laughed, the head of one guard suddenly exploded!
And the chest of another nearby turned into a scorched hole!
"Damn it, we're ambushed!" The guards' faces shifted, scrambling to find cover.
Jose's eyes darted around the room, but the cabinet and desk were already crowded with people hiding.
There wasn't any other place left to take cover in the room.
He gritted his teeth and grabbed the petrified Erin beside him, using the female doctor as a human shield.
At the same time, he pulled out his handgun from his waist, firing back at the attackers outside the room.
He finally saw clearly—the ambushers were the Ares people, sending shivers down his spine.
However, upon realizing that there were only two of them, his hope reignited.
"Charge! They're outnumbered!" Jose shouted as he dragged the female doctor forward, leading the charge. The others followed suit, rushing the attackers.
In just the brief earlier moments, they had already lost five men, and stalling any longer would lead to certain death.
Their only chance of survival was to take down these two Ares warriors quickly.
The two female Ares warriors, having received Ma Lu's request earlier to avoid hurting Erin, put away their plasma guns and resorted to close combat.
Even when faced with a group far exceeding their own in numbers, the two female warriors were unfazed, relying on their combat suits to withstand bullets and embodying the rugged audacity of the Ares people.
When the skirmish ended, all the prison guards, including Jose, lay dead. However, one of the female Ares warriors was gravely injured, and Erin was hit by a stray bullet, resulting in her death.
Witnessing the scene, Ma Lu didn't hesitate. He picked up Jose's dropped handgun and shot himself in the head.
After reloading his save, Ma Lu was already familiar with how the fight would unfold.
He requested a spare explosive energy pistol from one of the female Ares warriors and stepped onto the battlefield himself. His first shot instantly took out the biggest threat—Jose.
He then warned the previously injured female warrior to dodge a sulfuric acid bomb flying toward her from the side, and even took a moment to advise the female doctor to get down to avoid stray bullets.
In the end, they successfully wiped out the group of enemies without any casualties.
Ma Lu noticed that the two female Ares warriors' attitudes toward him had visibly changed.
Initially, they had thought Ma Lu was just an impressive cook. Though polite, they didn't hold him in such high regard as they did now.
After all, the Ares people valued strength above all, and Ma Lu's impressive performance in combat had earned their recognition.
With Jose and the others taken out, the trembling Erin regained a little composure, but as her eyes lingered on the corpses littering the ground, a hint of sadness crept into them.
Not long ago, these people had been her colleagues. Although they had suddenly revealed their darker sides and turned into brutes, seeing familiar faces grow cold brought Erin an undeniable pang of sorrow.
Still, she worked hard to steady her emotions and thanked Ma Lu.
"Thank you for saving me, Mr. Ma Lu."
"Don't mention it." Ma Lu nudged Jose's corpse with his foot. "I had some unfinished business with him anyway."
When Ma Lu first encountered Jose, the prison guard captain had punched him in the abdomen for no reason and later falsified records to ensure Ma Lu was locked up in Prison No. 444.
Although, in hindsight, it worked out for Ma Lu's plans, allowing him to legitimately participate in the "fishing" activities to collect ingredients, there was still lingering resentment.
Boss Ma, being a naturally petty person, seized the chance to settle this grudge.
"Let's go," he said to the female doctor.
"Mr. Ma Lu, the prison has completely fallen into chaos. There are rebels and inmates everywhere outside, and the guards have gone insane. Where can we even go?"
Erin paused in realization, casting a nervous glance at the two female Ares warriors.
"It's fine. They're not bad people. Stay with me for now. When the time comes for them to leave, you can go with them," Ma Lu replied.
