Chapter 120.2
Why The Apprentice Group Is Here
The content easily outstripped the wildest imaginations of all three of them.
“This guy, apparently, mistook Brook-san—who came to clean up the slums—for an enemy. While most residents fled quickly, he alone launched a surprise attack from behind.”
“”Huuuuuuh?!””
“Of course, the ambush failed, and he was captured on the spot by Brook-san.”
“Strike first, win first.”
“”That’s not the point!””
Magg gave a firm thumbs-up as he declared this, and the three couldn’t help but yell. Of course, they did. Brook was, by all accounts, a seasoned swordsman. A child raised in the slums stood no chance, especially in a surprise attack. Running away would have been far wiser. Why he had chosen such a hopeless gamble was beyond anyone’s understanding. While Magg appeared nonchalant, it was clear his logic was flawed in many ways. Even Urgus sighed wearily.
From Magg’s perspective, though, the slums were his home. No matter how flawed they seemed to outsiders, they were his sanctuary. For Magg, who had no place to flee, Brook—coming to destroy his home—was an enemy. This stirred in him a resolve to at least strike a blow, even if he couldn’t win.
“…Well, setting the ambush aside… Magg, why were you brought here?”
“Captured?”
“According to Brook-san, he thought that with such mental fortitude and agility, Magg could become strong if trained. So, he decided to take him back.”
“Took him back…”
“And, apparently, he thought leaving him unsupervised might cause some trouble.”
“” “Ahh…” “”
“?”
Magg tilted his head in confusion, but the other three seemed to understand. Despite appearing emotionally detached, Magg often acted decisively in odd situations. Brook must have thought it better to take responsibility and train Magg to live a normal life than to let him roam and potentially stir up trouble. In some ways, Brook, like his partner Ali, was kind-hearted and dutiful.
In the long run, being captured by Brook turned out to be a blessing for Magg. This place guaranteed food, shelter, and clothing. The mentors weren’t harsh tyrants but reasonable instructors, ensuring a comfortable environment as long as the rules were followed. Magg didn’t resent being brought here; he simply had an unusual backstory.
The trio exchanged glances with Urgus, feeling slightly overwhelmed by Magg’s situation. As the senior apprentice left in charge, Urgus muttered, “It’s not interesting at all,” before continuing.
“My family’s been working as castle clerks for generations.”
“Wait, Urgus, you’re actually a rich kid?!”
“Hey, Yuuri, what’s that supposed to mean?!”
“I mean, yeah, you did seem refined at times, but it’s still unexpected.”
“Sorry for surprising you!”
Yuuri’s genuine astonishment interrupted the conversation, while Yakk and Camille nodded knowingly. Urgus usually acted like the leader of a gang of kids, so learning he came from a well-off family was surprising enough to be easily forgotten.
Meanwhile, Magg remained as expressionless as ever, looking as though he couldn’t care less. Whether Urgus was a rich kid or not didn’t matter to him—it was just Magg being Magg.
“So, yeah, my family’s clerks, but I’m the third son, so my brothers will take over. That’s why I decided to pursue my interest in becoming an adventurer and registered.”
“Got it.”
“At that time, the guild master wrote me a letter of introduction to the leader here, and that’s how I ended up here.”
“Oh, so you had a letter of introduction too, Urgus.”
“Yep.”
Urgus chatted casually with Yuuri, intending to conclude the story, when Camille, grinning mischievously, caught everyone’s attention. His sly smile, combined with his otherwise noble-looking face, gave him the air of a playful troublemaker. Urgus, sensing trouble, reached out to stop him, but Camille was quicker.
“That’s not the only reason, right? Didn’t you also want to help your older brother?”
“Where did you hear that?!”
“Secret sources~.”
“Camille, you little—!”
“…To help your brother as an adventurer?”
“…!”
Yuuri tilted her head curiously, while Urgus hesitated. He shouted at Camille, who only laughed gleefully, and Yakk watched with mild concern. Urgus didn’t mean any harm and wouldn’t hit Camille seriously—he was just flustered.
Though Urgus didn’t answer, Yuuri didn’t press him. She figured it wasn’t worth pushing if he didn’t want to say. However, Magg, unusually proactive, tugged on Yuuri’s sleeve.
“Magg, what is it?”
“Brother. Relics. Deliver.”
“…Huh?”
“Brother. Research. Deliver relics.”
“So… Urgus’s brother is a researcher, and you became an adventurer to deliver relics to him?”
“Yes.”
“Magg! Why are you spilling my secrets?!”
“Annoying.”
As Urgus shouted, still holding Camille in a headlock, Magg turned away, ignoring him. Urgus released Camille and chased after Magg, who dodged nimbly despite being smaller. Urgus had superior strength, but Magg, quick and perceptive, was adept at evasion.
As the two bickered their way out of the living room, the remaining three shrugged, as if to say, “That’s just how they are.”
Later, the two were captured by Brook and scolded by Ali for skipping study time. Moral of the story: always study during study time.
