Chapter 59
Tuna Mayo Sandwich And Bacon Egg Toast
In the early morning kitchen, the sound of something being mixed echoes. The source of the sound is Yuuri, who is mixing the contents of a bowl. The contents are tuna in oil that has been drained, and mayonnaise. For some reason, three bowls were prepared. The reason is simple: the taste is slightly different in each one.
The first bowl has just tuna and mayonnaise mixed simply. The second bowl has mayonnaise and a generous amount of pepper. The third bowl has mustard mixed in as well. These are the ingredients for breakfast sandwiches, but Yuuri decided to make them after asking for everyone’s preferences.
While the trainees with childish taste might not care, the adults would likely appreciate the extra pepper or mustard. Yuuri himself isn’t very good with spicy food, so the amount of mustard was approximate, or rather, eyeballed. His cooking is usually done by feel… except for sweets, of course.
“Yuuri, is the thickness of the sandwich bread okay like this?”
“Yeah, that’s fine. Thanks, Camille.”
“You’re welcome. It’s part of the job.”
While Yuuri made a large batch of tuna mayo, Camille continuously sliced bread for the sandwiches. The careful removal of the crust was because Yuuri made sandwiches that way. The crusts are saved and later turned into snacks, so nothing is wasted. They are properly thrown into a bowl to be kept.
Today’s menu is tuna mayo sandwiches, a vegetable salad, vegetable soup, and freshly squeezed milk. It was a relatively simple breakfast. Camille wondered if it might be a bit lacking, but while thinking about that, Yuuri started another task. He seemed to have finished making the tuna mayo.
What Yuuri took out was a block of bacon. This bacon was made from oak meat, choosing the belly part because it’s the type Yuuri was used to. Other parts were also sold, and the ham made from the thigh was quite nice. Monster meat, it seems, also tastes good when processed, with an unmatched flavor. Just crispy bacon is enough to be a good snack.
Yuuri began slicing the bacon, not too thick, not too thin, leaving a thickness that doesn’t make it too hard to cook but still allows the flavor to be enjoyed. Camille, watching Yuuri cut a large amount of bacon, wondered if it would be arranged next to the salad.
However, Yuuri wasn’t thinking about that at all.
After receiving the bread knife from Camille, who finished cutting the bread, Yuuri cut two slices of bread into slightly thicker toast sizes. After cutting, he spread a thin layer of butter on the surface of the slices. For some reason, he placed bacon strips on both ends.
“Yuuri?”
“Just a moment, I’m making a sample for us to try first.”
“Oh, yeah. That’s our breakfast, right?”
“That’s right.”
Yuuri then took out mayonnaise for some reason. The mayonnaise was in a container that was used when he made tartar sauce the other day. It was the familiar tube-type mayonnaise. Not wanting to waste it, he repurposed it.
Even so, there was still quite a bit left, so when he gave it to the neighborhood kids as water guns, they loved it as it allowed them to water things while playing. It seems that kids in this world are good at balancing play and chores. Wonderful.
With that mayonnaise, Yuuri surrounded the bread with it, making a kind of dam. After creating the dam with mayonnaise, Yuuri cracked an egg into it as if it was natural. The clear egg whites and the jiggly yolk stayed on the bread thanks to the mayonnaise, not spilling over.
Camille, puzzled by what was happening, saw Yuuri sprinkle salt and pepper on the egg. Then, as if struck by a sudden idea, Yuuri sprinkled powdered basil and added thinly sliced cheese that had been stored. He then placed it all directly into the oven.
“What about basil and cheese for Camille?”
“Oh, put them all on.”
“Understood.”
After making Camille’s as well, they put them in the oven. While waiting for them to bake, Yuuri warmed up the soup and arranged the vegetable salad in bowls. Leaving that task to Camille, Yuuri made tuna mayo sandwiches for both himself and Camille. They both preferred the plain type. They didn’t like the extra pepper or mustard, even though they tasted them.
The tuna mayo sandwiches cut in half, the neatly arranged vegetable salad, and the hot soup. On the other hand, the milk, just taken from the fridge, was cold. Next to the tuna mayo sandwiches, the freshly baked bacon egg toast was lined up. The egg baked in the oven had nicely turned into a fried egg. The bacon was thoroughly cooked, and the cheese was melted, which was also quite appetizing.
“Tuna mayo sandwiches and bacon egg toast breakfast is ready~”
“I thought there was no meat, but you were planning to use bacon and eggs here?”
“Yeah. I just really wanted to eat it. It’s nice to try something different sometimes, right?”
“…So it ends up being interesting. Yuuri is amazing…”
In a movie he had seen long ago, toast with a fried egg on top looked very delicious. Later, toast with a fried egg started to be sold at bakeries, and he occasionally saw it. However, since it can be made at home with just bread and eggs, it was a bit cumbersome to make a fried egg each time, so he decided to try putting a raw egg on from the start.
…However, it was a mess before he came up with the idea of making a dam with mayonnaise to prevent the egg from spilling. Failures are the mother of success.
“Well then, let’s eat.”
“Let’s eat.”
They joined hands and recited in unison, then began their meal. The salad was made with fresh vegetables and simply seasoned with salt. Usually, some would add mayonnaise, but since they had already used it in the tuna mayo and toast, they purposely didn’t use it today. In fact, the simple salt flavor was actually quite delicious. Balance is important.
The tuna mayo sandwich perfectly showcased the excellent combination of mayonnaise and tuna. The bread, freshly baked and soft, wrapped the tuna mayo fluffy and comfortably. It was so easy to eat that before they knew it, they had finished a slice.
As for the bacon egg toast, the bacon on the edges and the fried egg in the center, surrounded by mayonnaise and sprinkled cheese, made it seem like an upscale dish. Camille wondered what toast really was. He couldn’t understand if such a luxurious toast was acceptable. He had always believed toast was just for baking and spreading butter or jam, so his perception was thoroughly challenged.
By the way, ignoring Camille, Yuuri is munching away on his toast. While the bread eaten with bacon is delicious, the toast with soft, freshly cooked fried egg is in a different league. It’s also fun to eat while trying not to let the yolk ooze out. The egg has flavor because of the seasoning with salt, pepper, basil, and cheese. It’s guaranteed to be satisfying with just one slice.
“Will this be enough to make you happy?”
“Isn’t it actually too much for some people…?”
“Too much?”
“Jake doesn’t eat much in the morning.”
“Then let’s make his toast thinner.”
“Ask him?”
“Will do~”
The two of them enjoy their breakfast leisurely. There’s still time before everyone wakes up. They planned to enjoy a relaxed breakfast. That was not wrong. Usually, that was enough.
But…
“What’s that!? It wasn’t just the tuna mayo sandwiches!?”
“New menu added.”
“Camille, what’s on that?”
“…Whoa, good morning. Why are you guys up so early?”
““We came to try the new menu.””
“Stop matching…”
The shocked exclamation came from Yakk, who had begged Yuuri for the tuna mayo sandwiches yesterday and was firmly told, “It’s for breakfast tomorrow, so no.” He was so excited that he woke up early. Magg had keenly noticed the bacon egg toast and muttered quietly. Urgus asked Camille, who was eating. All three had the same thought. They wanted to try the new, delicious breakfast. That was all. Quite straightforward.
While chewing on the salad in his mouth, Yuuri tilted his head and looked at the three. Raw vegetables need to be chewed well to aid digestion. Not just raw vegetables, though. Food should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. Ideally, a bite should be chewed 30 times, but of course, they didn’t do it that precisely. However, the more you chew, the more the satiety center is stimulated, reducing overeating, and the processes of digestion, breakdown, and absorption proceed smoothly.
Also, chewing well strengthens the jaw muscles, which is said to be good for health.
“Good morning, everyone. You’re early. Already eating?”
““Yes!””
“…I’m still eating, though…”
“Camille, you can keep eating. I’ll make some more. We’ll switch once you’re done.”
“Understood.”
Yuuri, who had finished his bacon egg toast while it was still warm, moved to the kitchen with the three. Camille grumbled about them coming at their usual time, but the three didn’t mind.
“First, I’ll prepare the bacon egg toast. Is the thickness of the bread okay like ours?”
“I prefer it a bit thicker.”
“I’d like it the same.”
“…Thinner.”
“Alright, understood. Urgus wants it thicker, Yakk wants it the same, and Magg wants it thinner, right?”
The three nodded to their preferences, and Yuuri sliced the bread accordingly. He placed the bacon on both ends with practiced hands and made a dam with mayonnaise. After quickly cracking an egg on top, the three watched with curiosity. Basic salt and pepper were sprinkled on all.
“What about pepper, basil, and cheese?”
“Less pepper, basil, and cheese.”
“I just want cheese!”
“Just extra pepper.”
“…You guys really have different tastes. It’s easy to understand, though.”
As he added the requested toppings, Yuuri couldn’t help but chuckle. Urgus complained that too much pepper numbs the tongue, Yakk said just cheese looked tastier, and Magg was set on just pepper and salt. The trainees were full of energy this morning too.
After adding the toppings as requested and placing them in the oven, it became the tuna mayo sandwiches. There were three types of fillings, so he asked each person’s preference:
“With mustard.”
“Plain for me.”
“Plain.”
Urgus didn’t dislike mustard and had it with sausages, so he chose mustard. Yuuri thought it would be good to know how much mustard was just right. Both Yuuri and Camille weren’t fond of mustard, so they didn’t have a good sense of balance. Yakk and Magg’s preference for plain might be because they wanted simple tuna mayo.
The tuna mayo sandwiches and bacon egg toast made for breakfast were enjoyed thoroughly by the three. Yakk said both were delicious, and Urgus commented that the bacon egg toast could be eaten for lunch too. Magg ate quietly, but his speed indicated he liked it.
“Urgus, how’s the mustard?”
“Seems fine this way. If you add more, it might overshadow the mayo flavor.”
“Got it. Thanks.”
“No problem. Thanks for the delicious meal today.”
“You’re welcome. This is my job after all.”
Yuuri, with a relaxed smile, received Yakk’s request for a second helping with a raised hand. Having finished the salad, soup, and milk, Yakk was happily given the requested tuna mayo sandwiches. His smile was very pleased.
