Chapter 250: Chapter 249: Greed Island (Final)
As time passed, the ten-day Yorknew City auction finally entered its last day. Strictly speaking, the auction was divided into two parts. The first five days were mainly for the underground forces, auctioning off items that were often illegal or taboo.
Items like Scarlet Eyes, the eyes of the Three-Eyed Tribe, the skulls of the Twin Horn Tribe, and others couldn't be openly displayed in the world of Hunter where even assassination organizations paid taxes. These items were sold secretly.
The last five days were the official auction, broadcast on TV and the internet, featuring precious items. Treasures stolen by the Phantom Troupe weren't the entirety of the auction. For example, the Greed Island game console only appeared on this final day. Moreover, Greed Island consoles couldn't be duplicated by Kubee's God's Left Hand, Devil's Right Hand, as it couldn't replicate items imbued with Nen.
The hundred Greed Island game consoles were protected by Nen, making them nearly indestructible by even the most skilled Nen users.
"The auction for the Greed Island game consoles begins now," the host announced, and the bidding started.
There were many bidders, but the price increments were modest. Killua's brother, Milluki, was among the bidders. Without Battera's aggressive bidding, the prices weren't climbing as fast.
In the original story, the average price for the seven Greed Island consoles was around 35 billion, but this time, the bidding hadn't even reached 10 billion. It seemed unlikely to surpass 15 billion either.
Many potential buyers were instead looking to contact Battera. After his girlfriend's recovery, he still had dozens of consoles to sell.
Of course, Battera would keep some for himself. The items in Greed Island were too alluring. Previously, he had desperately sought the Archangel's Breath to save his girlfriend. Now that she was cured, he might still seek other treasures.
For instance, the Witch's Youth Elixir, said to reverse aging, was a powerful draw. One pill could reduce a person's age by a year, affecting only their body without altering their knowledge or memories. A bottle contained 100 pills. This elixir was far more appealing than the Archangel's Breath, especially to wealthy elderly individuals.
If Daniel sold a single pill in the Marvel world, it could fetch 100 billion.
There were also top-tier profession eggs. Once obtained and hatched, these eggs granted the holder unparalleled skills in various fields, such as a top-tier writer, pilot, or musician. These would be worth a fortune if sold.
However, most people wouldn't choose these as their final reward. They'd opt for something with a higher value, especially since the hatching period for these eggs ranged from one to ten years.
"150 billion! Sold to this gentleman for 150 billion," the auctioneer announced. Milluki secured the first Greed Island console without much competition.
Gon and Killua were present at the auction, along with Daniel. It was a rare opportunity, so Daniel decided to participate. It was his first auction experience, not due to lack of opportunities but because he never found them interesting. Now, as a wealthy individual, he often received invitations to charity events and auctions, but usually sent company representatives instead.
High society events were essential, despite their perceived boredom.
Gon and Killua wanted to enter the game earlier but took the chance to explore Yorknew City, enjoying their time together. Both looked quite handsome in suits, and thanks to their Hunter licenses, they had no trouble entering the auction.
"Bisuke, long time no see," Daniel greeted Biscuit, who was with Gon and Killua.
"I didn't expect you to have a game console. That's wonderful," Biscuit said. She had come to Yorknew City for Greed Island. Hearing from Gon and Killua that Daniel had a console, she decided to join them.
Biscuit wasn't here to buy a console. Despite her wealth as a Two-Star Hunter and gem hunter, she lacked liquid assets. Having recently spent heavily on a gem, she didn't have enough cash for the auction.
She had hoped to be hired by Battera, but Daniel's intervention saved Battera's girlfriend, negating the need for hired help. Battera might still seek assistance privately, as the treasures in Greed Island were highly tempting.
"Why don't you all go ahead? I need to find a place to store these consoles," Daniel said after some discussion. Biscuit, Gon, and Killua decided to enter the game first, while Daniel handled the logistics.
After Kurapika and Leorio left, Gon and Killua had nothing else to do outside. Leorio had left earlier than Kurapika, returning to medical school since he had no interest or money for the auction.
Entering the game, not knowing when they'd come out, staying in a hotel was impractical. Daniel needed a secure place for the expensive consoles.
"This is Bandit's Secret. I can learn it, but it will take time. Maybe later," Daniel thought as he left Yorknew City on a flight, heading to Whale Island's nearby city, Saba, the location of the first Hunter exam.
He bought a house and set up the Greed Island consoles in the basement, focusing on studying Chrollo and Pakunoda's Specialist Nen abilities.
Pakunoda was cooperative due to Chrollo being held hostage. Unfortunately, Daniel couldn't learn her ability, which frustrated him.
If his analysis ability couldn't handle Specialist Nen, it would be less useful. Other Nen categories could be developed with time and effort, but Specialist abilities were unique.
While Daniel couldn't analyze Pakunoda's ability, he could with Chrollo's. This puzzled him, as Specialist abilities varied greatly.
Chrollo's ability involved Nen manipulation, which Daniel could understand, while Pakunoda's was more like a unique talent, accessing deep memories through touch, similar to the Memory-Memory Fruit.
The difference was that the Memory-Memory Fruit could alter memories, while Pakunoda's ability couldn't alter others' memories, only her own.
"It seems I can only analyze external Nen. Kurapika's Specialist ability can't be analyzed either," Daniel concluded. He could only analyze Nen that was projected outward. Pakunoda and Kurapika's abilities seemed to alter their own constitution.
"This means some abilities can't be learned, like that guy's ability. Is this a limitation?" Daniel wondered.
He coveted several Nen abilities in the Hunter world, like Nobunaga's Four-Dimensional Mansion, and another incredible ability—God's Absence.
Owned by a weak Chimera Ant, this ability was godlike, perhaps as a reward for their weakness. If Daniel obtained it, his strength and breathing techniques from Demon Slayer would make him nearly invincible.
He could ambush and eliminate the Four Emperors with ease.
"Such a pity," Daniel thought, opening the Gate of Alchemy and stepping back into Yorknew City.
"Take these bodies. You're the only Troupe member left. If you seek revenge, come find me. But if you continue killing innocents, I'll come for you." Daniel handed Chrollo and Pakunoda's bodies to Machi in the outskirts of Yorknew City, delivering his message before leaving.
What Machi would do next, Daniel didn't know. He wasn't a mind reader. But if she continued her killing spree, he'd deal with her.
Daniel didn't worry about the dead gaining power through Nen, which required immense resentment. Without it, they couldn't achieve this level.
Hisoka's resurrection after his fight with Chrollo was due to intense resentment and unwillingness, triggered by Chrollo's tactics. Hisoka craved a fair, thrilling fight, not one where he was constantly outmaneuvered. This frustration and resentment revived him.
If Chrollo had fought fairly, Hisoka wouldn't have revived.
The Troupe, having killed many, weren't overly concerned about their own deaths, lacking significant resentment.
"Machi is ruthless," Daniel noted recent black market activities through the Hunter website. After he left, Machi attacked several gangs, killing many in what seemed like a rage-fueled spree, collapsing several criminal organizations.
Her motive was simple—retrieve the Troupe members' bodies taken by the gangs. Neither Daniel nor Kurapika had collected the bodies, leaving them with the underworld.
Daniel didn't care about this. In the criminal world, killing and being killed were inevitable.
Kurapika, now leading the Nostrade family, had taken over after Light Nostrade's assassination. With Neon in charge, Kurapika was her bodyguard.
"It's finally done," Daniel smiled, holding a one-meter-long cloth. He wasn't interested in developing Bandit's Secret yet, but the Unbelievable Convenience was different.
Owl had died during the Troupe's rampage, and now Daniel alone held this ability.
"Time for Greed Island," Daniel said, returning to Saba City. He donned a ring inscribed with a divine character and used Hatsu on the game console. The next moment, he appeared in a large, empty room.
"This ability can be very powerful if used correctly."
