Chapter 335: Chapter 331: The Wild Hounds (Part 3)
"Suit yourself," Suzuka said, seeing that Tsukushi was indifferent. Although Gozuki was considered their teacher in the current generation of the Rakshasa Demons, none of the other three, including his own daughter, had a particularly close relationship with him, except for Habaki, who idolized him.
In the Rakshasa Demons, Habaki was the one who revered Gozuki the most, as evidenced by their similar abilities in controlling their hair.
"Is Habaki dead?" When the group arrived at the battlefield where Akame and Habaki had fought, they found Habaki's body covered in the curse marks of Murasame. Suzuka, Tsukushi, and Tsukushi's expressions remained calm, seemingly unperturbed by their comrade's death.
"Leone, Bulat!" Akame and Sheele's expressions darkened when they saw Daniel and his group arrive, especially since the captured Night Raid members were bound and helpless.
"Akame, run! Don't worry about us!" Leone, Lubbock, and the others shouted as soon as they saw Akame and Sheele.
"Let's go," Akame muttered, her eyes flashing with reluctance. She prepared to retreat with Sheele. If Tatsumi were there, he would have undoubtedly rushed in, trying to save everyone, but Akame was different. It wasn't that she didn't care; in fact, she cared deeply. But because she cared, she knew the best way to save her comrades was to escape and fight another day.
"Stay," Daniel said as Akame and Sheele attempted to flee. Chains, hidden until that moment, suddenly wrapped around them, holding them fast.
"Huh, seems like we won't have to lift a finger," Tsukushi remarked, watching as Akame and Sheele were effortlessly captured. He turned to leave, as did Suzuka and Tsukushi.
"Wait," Daniel's command halted them. The three turned back, their expressions asking what more could possibly be needed.
"You're not going anywhere either," Daniel said, repeating his earlier move. He bound the Rakshasa Demons with chains, much to their surprise. In a flash, he appeared before them, his movements as swift as lightning, and struck several pressure points on their bodies.
The Rakshasa Demons had trained to control their bodies with precision, so mere chains wouldn't normally hold them—especially Suzuka, whose physical control made her nearly immune to physical restraints.
"What's the meaning of this?" Suzuka and the others were bewildered by Daniel's actions. Night Raid's captured members were equally stunned, unable to comprehend the apparent infighting.
"It means nothing. Just think of it as a chance to take a short rest," Daniel said with a wave of his left hand. The Convenient Large Cloth activated, swallowing up the Rakshasa Demons and Night Raid members alike.
"Poor guy, with a wound on the neck, he didn't even have a chance to sever it and stop the curse." Daniel sighed as he approached Habaki's body. The curse from Murasame took time to spread, but in Habaki's case, the wound on his neck left him no time or ability to stop it—unlike Esdeath in the original story, who had severed her arm to prevent the curse from spreading. However, one couldn't just sever their neck or head to survive.
"Esdeath-sama, save me!" At the headquarters of the Peace Church, Boric was in a panic, desperately fleeing towards Esdeath's villa after seeing his bodyguard, Holimaca, easily killed by Susanoo.
Boric had been confident in Holimaca's abilities, as he was an Imperial Arms user personally assigned by Prime Minister Honest. His Imperial Arm was a scythe, and he had thwarted several assassination attempts against Boric. However, this time, he faced Najenda's Susanoo.
"Najenda, you've got guts showing your face around here," Esdeath said, stepping out to confront her former comrade. After all, Najenda had once been her colleague, and it was Esdeath who had cost Najenda her left eye and arm.
"Esdeath-sama, kill her! Kill her!" Boric shouted, pointing furiously at Najenda and Susanoo.
"Are you trying to tell me what to do?" Esdeath responded coldly, delivering a powerful kick to Boric's chest. The impact caved in his chest, sending him flying into a wall, where he left a bloody mark before collapsing to the ground, lifeless.
Poor Boric had mistaken Esdeath for his savior, but she was anything but.
"What do you want?" Esdeath asked as she sat down on a nearby stone bench, her expression indifferent as she looked at Najenda.
"I want to know what you're planning," Najenda asked bluntly.
"You should be asking what he is planning," Esdeath replied with a slight smile. "He wants this Empire. As for me, he has something I desire. As for the Empire, you know I never cared for it."
"So, what did he offer you that made you give up the Empire?" Najenda, who knew Esdeath well—having been her colleague and having lost an eye and arm to her—was determined to understand what had changed in Esdeath. She had come in the hope of persuading her.
"He offered me something you could never provide: a broader world," Esdeath said. In recent days, as Daniel had trained her, he had also shared some knowledge of other worlds. When Esdeath learned of other worlds filled with powerful beings, she lost all interest in the Empire.
"You should leave," Esdeath said, dismissing Najenda with a wave. If she were still serving the Empire, she wouldn't have let Najenda leave alive. But things were different now.
"You've changed," Najenda said, sighing as she prepared to leave. Esdeath's transformation filled her with a sense of foreboding. She had come fully prepared to not return from this encounter, all in the name of the Revolutionary Army's cause. But if Esdeath wasn't going to kill her, she wouldn't waste the opportunity to leave.
"Since you're here, you're not leaving," Daniel said, suddenly appearing behind Najenda and knocking her out with a precise strike before she could react.
"Don't worry. I haven't harmed her," Daniel said as Susanoo, Najenda's loyal Imperial Arm, prepared to attack. At Daniel's words, Susanoo hesitated, stopping his attack.
"You can take her with you, but stay here. You know you can't escape with your power. For your master's sake, this is the safest option."
Susanoo, a living weapon, possessed incredible power. But he understood the situation. For the sake of Najenda, he reluctantly complied, staying behind as Daniel had instructed.
"A man like you allowing Boric to rise to power—that's puzzling," Daniel remarked the next day, addressing the head of the Peace Church. The head of the church had returned, and Daniel wasted no time questioning him.
"He was sent by the Prime Minister. If I didn't allow him to rise, more lives would have been lost. The Peace Church was originally just a gathering of people who had nowhere else to go," the head of the church sighed, explaining the difficult choices he had to make.
As a hybrid between a dangerous beast and a human, the church leader hadn't originally intended to reveal his abilities. But as the Empire grew darker, leaving the people with no way to survive, he had no choice but to use his powers.
Boric's presence might not have been good for some in the church, but it had protected the church from being eradicated by the Empire. The Peace Church had grown into what it was largely because of Boric's influence; without him, the Empire would have likely crushed it long ago.
"A version of justice similar to Kiritsugu's," Daniel noted, thinking of Kiritsugu Emiya's philosophy of sacrificing the few to save the many.
"The matter here is settled. It's time for us to return." After obtaining the blood of the church leader—his main objective—Daniel announced their departure the next day. Whether the Peace Church would later join the Revolutionary Army in rebellion was of no concern to him.
On the return journey, two more people accompanied them: Najenda and Akame. The trip was quick, as Daniel used the Mystic Gate to transport them directly back to the Imperial Capital.
Unlike other worlds, where the use of the Mystic Gate required discretion, in this world, it could be used openly. Even if someone saw it, they would likely mistake it for a strange Imperial Arm.
"Kurome." Upon returning to Esdeath's mansion, Akame immediately sought out her unconscious sister, Kurome. Given that Daniel had threatened the lives of the other Night Raid members and taken their Imperial Arms, neither Akame nor Najenda had shown any signs of resistance, at least outwardly.
"Don't worry. She's fine now. All she needs is rest." With Akame present, Daniel decided to wake Kurome.
"Sister!" Kurome exclaimed, overjoyed to see her sister Akame the moment she awoke.
"Alright, everyone out. Let the sisters talk." Daniel's intervention had, for now, paused the deadly rivalry between the two sisters.
"What did you say?" Meanwhile, Daniel had gathered Najenda, Run, Esdeath, and others to reveal his plan.
Upon hearing it, both Najenda and Run were left speechless in shock.
"You're being far too optimistic. The Revolutionary Army isn't without means to deal with Esdeath," Najenda eventually said after a long silence.
"You're referring to the Revolutionary Army's Dangerous Beast units
and Imperial Arm squads? They're formidable, but they're not enough to handle the current Esdeath."
In preparation for facing Esdeath and Great General Budo, the Revolutionary Army had been quietly amassing strength—collecting Imperial Arms and training units of Dangerous Beasts for combat. Among the 48 Imperial Arms, one could tame Dangerous Beasts, though not the super-class ones, but certainly the special-class beasts. Najenda herself had a special-class flying beast named Kurosuke, as did Esdeath.
"How do you know that?" Najenda was taken aback. These were top-secret plans, known only to a select few in the Revolutionary Army, including herself.
"The Empire has many who have secretly allied with the Revolutionary Army, just as the Revolutionary Army has many who maintain ties with the Empire. These people are experts at playing both sides."
Najenda was left speechless by Daniel's response. Although she didn't know much about politics, she couldn't argue with the truth of Daniel's observation.
Throughout history, Daniel had seen how such people, with no sense of loyalty or morality, had betrayed their causes. People had invited foreign invaders into their own lands for power, so why wouldn't they switch sides in a civil war?
"More governors are surrendering without a fight. What's going on?" In the Imperial Palace, Great General Budo finally lost his temper as the Revolutionary Army continued to approach the capital.
"How would I know?" Prime Minister Honest responded, indifferent to the General's anger. Most of the governors who had defected were those he had personally recommended.
The Empire's territory was centered around the capital, with the most prosperous regions closest to it. These areas were mostly controlled by Honest's faction, while those opposing him had been killed or exiled to the borders.
"Once these rebels are dealt with, some people will need to be purged." The dire situation made Budo reconsider some of his principles. If he weren't so bound by tradition, he would have already struck down Honest, which would have greatly improved the Empire's situation.
Budo's Imperial Arm, Rai-Oh, was similar to Esdeath's Demon's Extract in that it could attack enemies over a wide area.
"Strange, there's been an increase in unusual Dangerous Beasts near the capital, causing many casualties. These aren't creatures that should be anywhere near the capital." In the Hunters' meeting room, Run presented this information, causing Daniel to fall into deep thought.
"Has Shura returned?" Dangerous Beasts that didn't belong near the capital only appearing near it could only mean that Shura had been using his Imperial Arm, Dimensional Formation: Shangri-La.
"This guy really is bold, transporting so many beasts." The sudden influx of beasts was too much for Run and Will to handle on their own. In the original timeline, Night Raid had assisted with this task, but now that Night Raid was out of commission, Esdeath had to intervene personally.
Since Tatsumi wasn't around, Shura hadn't tried to transport Esdeath to a remote island this time.
"Shura's back. It's time to act," Esdeath announced one day upon returning from the palace.
"The Wild Hounds have been formed, huh?" Daniel learned from Esdeath what had transpired in the palace. With the recent losses in the Hunters' ranks and the defeat at the hands of Night Raid during the Peace Church incident, Honest had suggested forming a new unit. Shura had volunteered, leading to the creation of the Wild Hounds, a unit equal in status to the Hunters.
Although Budo was displeased with Honest, he still approved of Shura, who had shown potential. In fact, Shura had once been mentored by Budo, as had Akame.
"Let's proceed then. Budo is yours to handle." With Shangri-La in play, Daniel knew it was time to make his move.
