Chapter 169: Chapter 169: Targeting the Core Region
Chapter 169: Targeting the Core Region
"The nights in this Ancient Battleground certainly are strange." Lin Langtian stood by the city window, frowning as he gazed at the dark red moonlight streaming down. Under its eerie light, it seemed as though the very energy of the world had solidified, slowing his movements and even the flow of energy within his body compared to the daytime.
Yet, while these nights posed a great risk to others, Lin Langtian didn't seem troubled at all. With a small shake, he summoned a dark membrane over his body. Strangely, this membrane seemed to carry a faint, devouring power. This was a layer of protective energy condensed by Lin Langtian through his Devouring Ancestral Talisman, enabling him to resist the restrictive force of the Ancient Battleground's night.
This was Lin Langtian's third night in the battleground. He hadn't sought contact with anyone, but Mo Ling had done a good job of gathering intelligence, and they'd already mapped out the city's layout and its dominant forces. For now, the Sacred Light Dynasty held control of the city. While Lin Langtian didn't consider them a serious threat, he hadn't engaged them since they hadn't provoked him.
"Ling Yi, do you have any idea where the Heretic Elder's legacy might be located in the battleground?" Lin Langtian asked as he sat cross-legged on the stone bed.
Obtaining the Heretic Elder's inheritance was crucial to learning the techniques of the Netherworld Fiend Clan. Only through this legacy could he fully master the immense demonic energy within the Mirror Realm and embark on his own "Path of the Demon."
In response, the noble voice of Ling Yi echoed within his mind: "According to Mu Shi's memories, the Heretic Elder's legacy and the Icebound Chill Pill are located within the central core area of the battleground. Mu Shi wasn't certain of its precise location, but if you reach the core, signs will undoubtedly appear."
Lin Langtian nodded. The Ancient Battleground held numerous treasures and inheritances. As one of the most famous figures of ancient times, the Heretic Elder's legacy wouldn't remain entirely hidden. He remembered that, in the original timeline, he had distanced himself from his group, disappearing for a year only to reappear at the final trial. While partly to avoid Lin Dong's growing influence, he'd also been pursuing the Heretic Elder's inheritance in the Central Plains.
Yet, while the Elder's inheritance was powerful, his former self hadn't truly understood its core principles or possessed the Golden Spirit Wheel Mirror, and so fell victim to Lin Dong's destiny-driven strength...
Ling Yi interrupted his thoughts. "While the Heretic Elder's legacy is in the core area, you'll also find many powerful warriors from high-level and even supreme dynasties gathering there. To go there alone would be reckless. Luckily, since the Hundred Dynasties War has only just begun, you're not pressed to rush in. Better to break through to the Nirvana Stage first. You'll be much better prepared to secure the legacy then."
Lin Langtian nodded; he knew well enough not to act recklessly. The Heretic Elder's legacy attracted many who coveted its power. Going in underprepared would mean nothing more than becoming fodder.
"Be cautious tonight. I sense unusual fluctuations in the air—stronger than usual. Plus, there are several unfamiliar auras near the city," Ling Yi suddenly noted after a pause.
"A beast horde?" Lin Langtian guessed.
Beast hordes were one of the most terrifying events on the Ancient Battleground. When night fell, countless demonic beasts would often gather in hordes, wreaking havoc like a plague of locusts.
As he pondered this, the ground beneath him began to tremble, and the city around him seemed to shudder slightly.
A low siren immediately wailed through the city, alerting its inhabitants, most of whom were seasoned warriors. Outside, the ground shook as an ominous, frenzied roar echoed from all directions, spreading waves of oppressive sound that set the entire city quivering.
Along the city walls, figures darted up to prepare for the approaching threat. Lin Langtian also leaped up onto the nearest wall, surveying the scene.
A vast, crimson wave stretched as far as he could see. The red glow came from thousands upon thousands of blood-red eyes, packed into a seemingly endless mass of demonic beasts. The number of creatures was staggering.
As Lin Langtian took in the scene, the familiar sounds of footsteps came from behind him. Lin Dong, Mo Ling, and the others joined him, and at the sight of the monstrous horde, they inhaled sharply. For many, this was their first encounter with a beast horde of such magnitude.
"Captain, what do you think we should do?" Mo Ling turned to Lin Langtian, seeking his guidance.
"Don't worry. While there are many beasts in this horde, none of them are Nirvana level. I can handle it," Lin Langtian said, scanning the horde calmly.
Lin Dong and Mo Ling exhaled in relief, nodding as they steadied themselves. They were grateful to have aligned themselves with such a powerful ally; without him, even a routine beast horde would have posed a serious challenge.
"Don't panic!" Suddenly, powerful figures emerged from the Sacred Light Dynasty's central stone tower, hovering above the city. Their voices boomed out, reaching everyone in the city.
"The horde may be vast, but so long as you follow the Sacred Light Dynasty's commands, you'll all survive unscathed!" one of them called out. This man, whose strength was at the peak of the Creation Stage, gazed down at the gathered forces with a commanding air.
While many of the other warriors resented the Sacred Light Dynasty's dominance, they dared not voice their discontent. In a few days, the Sacred Light Dynasty had already solidified its control of the city—a control maintained by bloody violence.
Then, a man dressed in golden robes stepped forward on a high tower, his face proud and unyielding. Over the last few days, the Sacred Light Dynasty had made it clear that they viewed themselves as the rulers here, treating everyone else as subjects.
The man's eyes scanned the crowd until he spotted Mo Ling and his companions on the western wall. His gaze darkened.
"Mo Ling, you and the Great Flame Dynasty are assigned to defend the northwestern wall. Make sure this horde doesn't breach the city!" he ordered, his tone icy.
